Godlike.Host offers hosted Hytale servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Run /op add <playername> in the server console or as an existing operator in-game. If the player has never joined, use their UUID instead of a name. Some hosting panels require you to enable operators before the command works.
Choose the method that matches your server access
Hytale uses operator status for administrative access. The correct procedure depends on whether you can use the server console, whether the target player has joined before, and whether you need a command-based grant or a persistent configuration entry.

Before granting operator access
- Confirm that you control the server or have authorization from its owner.
- Check the exact in-game name, including capitalization, or obtain the player’s account UUID.
- Decide whether the access is an immediate, command-based grant or a persistent entry in
permissions.json. - Verify whether your host has operators disabled. A disabled operator setting can make a valid command fail.
- Back up configuration files before making manual changes.
Operator status is broader than a single gameplay permission. Give it only to people you trust with the server’s administrative functions.
Add an admin from the console or in-game
Use the standard command
- Open the Hytale server console, or join the server with an account that is already an operator.
- Enter
/op add <playername>, replacing<playername>with the target’s exact username. Do not type the angle brackets. - Submit the command and wait for the server response.
- Have the target reconnect or perform an administrative action to confirm that the assignment took effect.
Zap-Hosting and Cybrancee document the slash form, /op add <playername>. Apex Hosting shows the console form as op add [username]; in that console, the leading slash is omitted and the square brackets are explanatory placeholder marks, not characters to type.

Recognize a successful grant
Apex describes a confirmation message stating that the user is now an operator. Nodecraft reports that the target receives an in-game message. Exact wording can vary by server build and host panel, so treat the server’s acknowledgement—not a browser notification—as the authoritative confirmation.
If you are using an in-game command
The account issuing the command must already be an operator. A regular player cannot promote another account merely by entering the command in chat. If the command is rejected for lack of permission, use the console or ask an existing operator to run it.
Add a player who has never joined
A username may not be enough for an account that has never connected. In that case, use the player’s UUID:
- Obtain the exact UUID from a trusted Hytale account or server record supplied by your host.
- Open the server console or use an existing operator account.
- Run
/op add <UUID>, replacing the placeholder with the complete UUID. - Check the confirmation response and ask the player to connect so the permission can be tested.
Apex Hosting specifically documents UUID-based assignment for players who have never joined. A UUID avoids ambiguity when usernames are unavailable or when similarly named accounts could be confused.

Enable operators when the host has them turned off
Some providers expose a server-wide switch that must be enabled before operator commands are accepted.
GGServers
- Stop the server.
- Open Server Settings.
- Open General Settings.
- Turn on Allow operators.
- Save the setting, start the server when ready, and then run the operator command from the console or in-game.
Cybrancee
Cybrancee’s setup guidance likewise says operators must be enabled first. Look for the provider’s operator or permissions control in the server settings, enable it, save, and then issue the grant command. The exact panel layout can change, so use the label shown by your current server edition rather than assuming that every host uses the GGServers path.
Do not assume that enabling the switch automatically grants anyone access; it only allows operator assignments. You still need to add each person by name or UUID.
Use a hosting panel instead of a command
Aternos
Aternos provides a panel workflow:
- Open the server’s Players section.
- Open Ops.
- Enter the player’s username.
- Confirm the addition.
This method is useful when you do not have direct console access. It also reduces typing errors because the panel presents a dedicated operator list. If the player has never joined and the panel cannot resolve the name, use the UUID-based method through a console or a panel field that accepts UUIDs.

Make the assignment persistent with permissions.json
A command is the quickest way to grant access, while a permissions file is the file-based approach for maintaining operator assignments. Apex Hosting places this file under its Config Files area and advises stopping the server before editing.
- Stop the Hytale server from the host panel or service manager.
- Create a backup copy of the current
permissions.json. - Open the file under the host’s configuration-file area.
- Use the file’s existing schema to add the intended player or UUID to the operator entry. Do not invent a new structure or delete unrelated permission data.
- Validate that the file remains valid JSON: matching braces, quoted property names, commas in the correct places, and no comments.
- Save the file, close the editor, and start the server.
- Verify the player’s access in-game and inspect the server log for configuration errors.
The exact property layout can depend on the Hytale server build and host tooling, so copying a random example from an unrelated guide is risky. If the panel provides a structured editor, prefer it over hand-editing raw JSON. Apex warns that a permissions-file mistake can affect access for everyone on the server, which is why a backup and a stopped server are important.

Use the command for a quick, authorized change. Use the file when you are maintaining configuration as part of a repeatable server administration process.
Verify, audit, and change access safely
Verify the right account
- Compare the confirmation message with the intended username or UUID.
- Ask the player to run only a harmless administrative action first.
- Check the operator list or configuration file after the change.
Keep a current operator roster
Record who has operator access and why. Remove people who no longer moderate the server through the same panel or configuration interface that granted them access. Because a universal removal command and its exact syntax are not established here, do not guess a command such as a made-up /perm variant; use your host’s documented removal control or edit the backed-up permissions file carefully while the server is stopped.

Protect the console and files
- Restrict access to the hosting account and console credentials.
- Do not paste credentials or UUID lists into public chat.
- Keep dated backups before each manual permissions change.
- Review the roster after staff changes, migrations, or restoration from backup.
Troubleshooting common failures
“Unknown command” or a syntax error
Check whether you are in the console or in-game. Try the slash form in chat, /op add <playername>, and the host-documented console form without the slash, op add [username]. Replace the placeholder with a real name and do not include brackets.
“You do not have permission”
The issuing account is not an operator, or operators are disabled in the host settings. Use the server console, ask an existing operator, or enable the host’s Allow operators control before trying again.

Confirm spelling and capitalization. For a player who has never joined, switch to the UUID method rather than repeatedly trying a username.
The panel has no Ops option
Look under the panel’s Players or Permissions area and confirm that you are editing the correct server instance. If the provider hides operator controls until they are enabled, turn on the operator setting first. When no panel control exists, use the console if your plan provides one.

The permissions file caused an error
Stop the server, restore the last known-good backup, and check the JSON for missing commas, braces, or quotation marks. Do not continue adding entries until the server starts cleanly and the file is accepted.
Does the server need a restart after an operator command?
Available host instructions do not establish one universal restart requirement for a command-based grant. Follow the response from your server and host panel. A permissions-file edit is different: the server must be stopped while you edit it, then started so the saved configuration can be read.

Security implications of operator status
Operator access enables sensitive server commands, not merely cosmetic privileges. Grant it only to trusted moderators, use UUIDs when names are uncertain, and keep the operator roster small. If someone no longer needs administrative access, remove that entry promptly through the panel or carefully maintained permissions file. A malformed permissions file can affect every player’s access, so treat it like a production configuration file rather than an informal text note.
Server version and resource considerations
Operator commands are independent of a particular hardware model, but the server still needs a supported runtime. A 2026 Orbis Hytale social post summarizing the official manual cites 4 GB or more of RAM and Java 25; that is secondhand guidance, not a verified universal requirement for every Hytale server edition or player count. Check the current Hytale Server Manual at support.hytale.com and your host’s requirements for the exact build you run.
Single-player and local-server caveat
Guides disagree about enabling operator access in single-player. Pine Hosting lists /op self, while another setup guide says a --allow-op launch flag is required. Because those instructions conflict and the applicable build is not established, neither should be treated as a guaranteed procedure. The console or multiplayer-server methods above are the dependable choices when you control a dedicated server.
Bottom line
For a normal multiplayer server, run /op add <playername> from the console or as an existing operator. Use the player’s UUID if they have never joined, enable operators when your host requires it, and edit permissions.json only with the server stopped and a backup available.
