On a self-hosted Assetto Corsa Competizione (ACC) dedicated server, add an adminPassword entry to settings.json, save the file as UTF-16LE, restart the server, then have the connected player open chat with Enter and type /admin your-password. Hosted servers can work differently: the provider may require you to set the password in its control panel instead of editing a file.
The procedure below separates those two setups, preserves the encoding ACC expects, and explains what to do when the password is ignored or changes disappear.
First determine which type of ACC server you run
The correct place to set the password depends on how the server is operated.
- Self-hosted dedicated server: you manage the server files and edit
settings.jsondirectly. - Hosted server: a game-server company supplies a web panel or other management interface. The panel may write the configuration for you and may prevent direct file edits.
Do not apply a generic Assetto Corsa hosting guide to ACC without checking that it covers Competizione. Guides for the original Assetto Corsa title, or for a different provider, can use different panels, file names, and restart behavior.

Self-hosted ACC: add the admin password step by step
1. Stop the server and make a backup
Stop the dedicated server cleanly before changing its configuration. A general Assetto Corsa administration guide warns that a running server can overwrite edits when it shuts down or restarts; that behavior has not been definitively confirmed for every ACC build, but stopping first is the safer procedure.
Copy the existing configuration to a separate backup location before editing. Preserve the original file name and extension in the backup so you can restore it if the server fails to start. A backup is especially important if you later test regeneration by removing configuration files: deleting JSON files can destroy existing settings, and regeneration has not been verified as an ACC-specific recovery method.
2. Locate the server’s settings.json
Find the settings.json used by the dedicated server instance you intend to administer. A secondary ACC guide places configuration files in the server’s cfg folder, but the available handbook excerpt does not independently confirm that path for every installation. If several server copies exist, identify the one launched by your service, shortcut, container, or hosting script rather than editing an unused template.
Open the file as text and confirm that it is valid JSON. ACC configuration property names are case-sensitive; the required name is exactly adminPassword, with a capital P.
3. Add or change adminPassword
Insert the property alongside the other password settings, such as the join and spectator password fields. If an adminPassword property already exists, change its value instead of creating a second property with the same name. Duplicate JSON keys can be handled unpredictably by parsers.

A minimal fragment looks like this:

Choose a private password appropriate for your server and do not publish the real value in a forum post, configuration screenshot, stream overlay, or public repository. Keep commas, braces, and quotation marks valid when adding the property to a larger file. For example, a property inserted before another property needs a trailing comma; the final property in an object does not.
The ACC Server Admin Handbook defines this field as the password used to elevate through “Server admin commands.” It is not the server’s normal driver join password unless you deliberately make the two values identical.
4. Save the file as UTF-16LE
ACC’s handbook states that the server is exclusively configured through JSON files in UTF16-LE format. Save settings.json as UTF-16 little-endian, not ordinary UTF-8.
Editors label this format differently. Look for a save or encoding option such as UTF-16 LE, Unicode (UTF-16 little endian), or an equivalent explicit label. Do not rely on an ambiguous option named only “Unicode,” and do not change the extension to a different format. After saving, reopen the file with an editor that displays its encoding and verify that the file is still valid JSON.
Some community tools have reported successful imports with UTF-8 files. That is a tool-specific observation, not a change to the ACC server format. A UTF-8 file may appear to work in one workflow yet be read incorrectly by the server or by another utility, so UTF-16LE is the safer format to follow.

5. Start or restart the server
Start the stopped server, or restart it if your control script supports a clean restart. The server must reload settings.json before the new password can be used. Watch the startup output for a configuration or JSON parsing error; a malformed file can prevent the instance from loading its settings.
If the server starts with old behavior, stop it again and check that you edited the active instance’s file, saved the change in UTF-16LE, and did not leave a second adminPassword entry elsewhere in the object.
Elevate a connected player through the ACC chat
After the server has loaded the password, the person who needs administrator access must already be connected as a driver or spectator. The handbook’s example uses the in-game chat:
- Join the ACC server as a driver or spectator.
- Press Enter to open chat.
- Type
/admin, followed by a space and the configured password. Do not type the angle brackets shown in explanatory notation; enter the actual password. - Send the message.
The documented example is /admin adminPw123. Replace that sample with the exact value in your file, including capitalization and punctuation. The command is an elevation step; it does not create a separate user account or permanently attach administrator rights to a Steam or game profile.

If the command is accepted, use the server’s available administrative commands from the handbook edition that matches your installation. The command list is not fixed across all documents: the handbook describes version 1.0 as beginning with a limited set that was expected to expand. Avoid assuming that a command listed for another release exists on your server.

Hosted ACC servers: use the provider’s panel when required
On a hosted server, first open the provider’s ACC configuration page rather than downloading and editing a local copy of settings.json. One provider’s ACC documentation represents the setting as "adminPassword": "set-in-panel" and explicitly says that the value is set in the panel, not in the file.
- Stop the server from the provider panel if it offers a stop control.
- Open the ACC settings, configuration, or gameplay-configuration section.
- Find the administrator-password field. The visible label may differ, but it corresponds to
adminPassword. - Enter a new secret, save or apply the panel change, and start or restart the server as the provider requires.
- Connect as a driver or spectator and test
/admin your-passwordin chat.
Panel implementations differ. Some providers regenerate the underlying JSON, restrict file access, or apply settings only after a restart. If a panel warns that direct file edits will be overwritten, treat that warning as authoritative for that host and keep the password in the panel instead.

Troubleshooting an admin password that does not work
The chat command is ignored
- Confirm the player is connected to the intended server and is in a driver or spectator session.
- Open chat with Enter, then send
/adminfollowed by one space and the exact password. - Check capitalization, punctuation, and accidental leading or trailing spaces in the configured value.
- Restart the server after any password change; editing the file alone does not prove that the running process reloaded it.
The server starts, but the old password remains active
Check whether you edited the configuration for a different server instance, a sample file, or an inactive installation. Verify the launch path or service definition, then inspect the active file after stopping the server. If a provider manages the instance, make the change in its panel instead of a local or downloaded copy.

The server will not load the file
Inspect the JSON for a missing comma, an extra comma, unmatched braces, or accidental smart quotation marks. Confirm that the editor saved the file as UTF-16LE and retained the .json extension. Restore the backup if necessary, then reapply one change at a time.
The change disappears after a restart
A running process may overwrite a file when it shuts down, and a hosted panel may regenerate its own configuration. Stop the self-hosted process before editing, save the file, and start it only after the edit is complete. For a hosted instance, save the value in the panel and follow the provider’s apply/restart workflow.

You are considering deleting JSON files to regenerate defaults
Do not use deletion as a first-line fix. One guide suggests regeneration, but that behavior is unverified for ACC and can erase existing server settings. Make a complete backup before any such experiment, and prefer correcting the active file’s encoding, syntax, path, or panel value.
The command list differs from a guide you found
Handbook editions are not identical. Versions 1.6.0, 1.9.3, and 1.10.2 have been circulated, and no 2026 edition was confirmed. The documented command set begins with a limited version 1.0 list that was expected to grow. Match instructions to the handbook or documentation for the ACC build you actually run rather than treating an older list as universal.
Password and change-management practices
- Use a password that is different from the driver join password and from passwords used for the host account.
- Limit the number of people who receive it. Anyone who knows it can attempt the documented elevation command from a connected driver or spectator session.
- Store the backup outside the publicly served or shared server directory, and remove real passwords from screenshots, bug reports, and version-control history.
- When the administrator group changes, replace the value in the active configuration or panel, restart the server, and distribute only the new password.
- Record the server build, handbook edition, configuration location, and encoding in private administration notes so another operator can reproduce the setup without guessing.
What is established about ACC versions and documentation
The password property and chat syntax come from excerpts of an “ACC Server Admin Handbook.” Circulated editions include 1.6.0, 1.9.3, and 1.10.2; the excerpts do not identify a confirmed 2026 edition or a clearly established publisher. Treat labels and command availability as version-sensitive.
The handbook’s encoding statement is precise: ACC configuration JSON uses UTF16-LE. Its example says to press Enter for chat and type /admin adminPw123 to elevate. Those two details are the stable core of the self-hosted procedure. File locations, panel behavior, restart overwrite behavior, and the complete command inventory require checking the documentation or management interface for the specific server installation.
