To make a player an admin on a Vintage Story server, run /player PlayerName role admin from the server console. Hosting guides also use the shorter /op PlayerName command, but confirm that it works on your game build with /help. If you cannot access the console, set a startup command in serverconfig.json and restart the server. A new player cannot promote themselves: new servers start players in the suplayer role, which cannot manage privileges.
Choose the route that fits your access

Add an admin from the server console
The console is the direct route when you have access to it. On a newly created server, use the console to grant the first admin role; a player joining with the default suplayer role does not have permission to grant themselves privileges.

- Check the command syntax on your build by entering
/help. The server configuration command,/serverconfigwith no arguments, can also help confirm the available syntax. - Run
/player PlayerName role admin, replacingPlayerNamewith the player’s in-game name. The command assigns the named admin role. - Check the server response or have the player reconnect and confirm they can use an admin-only command. If the command is rejected, follow the syntax shown by your server rather than repeatedly trying an unverified variant.
What about /op?
Some hosting guides describe /op PlayerName as a shortcut for /player PlayerName role admin. The official wiki information available for this procedure confirms the /player route but does not confirm that /op is available on every build. Treat /op as build-dependent: check /help before relying on it.
Set the first admin in serverconfig.json
Use the configuration route if no one yet has admin privileges or you cannot issue a console command. The server reads startup commands when it launches, so a configuration edit alone does not immediately change a running server.

- Stop the server before editing its configuration file.
- Open
serverconfig.jsonin the server’s files. With managed hosting, this is usually done through the provider’s file manager, if one is available. - Find the
StartupCommandssetting and add the admin command, for example/op PlayerName. Because/opis not confirmed for every build, use the syntax your server reports as supported. - Save the file and check that the surrounding JSON remains valid. Some hosting instructions specify separating multiple startup commands with
nand no spaces; configuration conventions can vary, so do not assume that format applies to every server version or panel. - Start the server. The startup command is applied during launch; if the server fails to boot, stop it, correct or remove the malformed entry, and start it again.
Configuration layout and command syntax can change between game versions. If the expected setting is absent or the server reports an error, use the server’s current command help and configuration output rather than inserting a guessed setting or command.
Promote a player from in-game chat
An existing admin can grant the role while playing. Open chat and run /player PlayerName role admin, using the target player’s in-game name. This does not help when nobody has admin rights yet: the new server’s starting role cannot manage privileges. In that case, use the server console or the startup-configuration route to establish the first admin.

Understand what the admin role grants
Vintage Story defines named roles and their privilege bundles in the Roles array of serverconfig.json. The admin role has privilege level 99999 and includes every privilege, including the ability to grant admin to other players.
Granting a player the admin role is different from adding one permission. The /player privilege-grant option can give an individual player an extra privilege without changing their role; individual privileges stack on top of that player’s role. Choose the role when the player should receive the admin bundle, rather than treating a single added privilege as equivalent to admin.

Whitelist considerations on dedicated servers
Some hosting instructions recommend adding a player to the whitelist before running the admin command. Treat this as a server-setup consideration, not a universal prerequisite: the exact order may depend on the server’s whitelist configuration and version. If your server uses a whitelist, confirm the player’s access there and check the command response before assuming that a failed promotion means the role command is wrong.
Troubleshoot a failed promotion
- The command is unknown: Check
/helpon the server. The shorter/opcommand is not confirmed for all builds; try the supported/playersyntax shown by your server. - The server says you lack permission: The account issuing the command is not an admin or otherwise allowed to manage privileges. Use the server console or set up the first admin through startup configuration.
- The player still cannot use admin commands after a config edit: Stop and relaunch the server so it reads the updated startup commands. A file change does not take effect in an already-running server.
- The server will not start after a config edit: Stop the server and review the edited JSON and startup-command formatting. A malformed startup-command line can prevent booting; correct or remove the entry before trying again.
- The command appears to target the wrong player: Confirm the exact in-game player name and use it in place of
PlayerName; do not include the angle brackets shown in syntax examples. - The host panel has no obvious console or file access: Panel controls vary by provider. Look for its console or file-manager features, or consult that provider’s server instructions; do not assume every panel uses the same labels or workflow.
Keep the privilege grant deliberate
Because the admin role includes every privilege and can grant admin to other players, assign it only to accounts that should have full server control. If a player needs a narrower capability, use the relevant individual privilege instead of granting the complete admin role. The role and its privilege definitions are part of the server configuration, so administrators managing a customized role setup should inspect the Roles array before changing it.
