Godlike.Host offers hosted V Rising servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
To add an administrator to a V Rising dedicated server, put the player’s 17-digit SteamID64 in adminlist.txt, enable the console in that player’s game client, and run adminauth after joining the server. The file entry alone does not grant access; adminauth is the step that authenticates the player in-game.
What you need before editing the server
Have the following ready:
- Permission to edit the dedicated server’s files or access to the host’s file manager.
- The administrator’s SteamID64, written as a 17-digit decimal number.
- A V Rising client that can join the server.
- The ability to restart the server if the host requires a restart after configuration changes.
Each person who needs administrative access must be added separately. Do not use a character name, display name, Steam nickname, or the older STEAM_0:1:... identifier in the file.

SteamID64 is the decimal identifier used by the server for permission matching. It is normally the 17-digit number in a player’s Steam profile URL. A SteamID lookup service such as steamid.io can convert other Steam identifier formats when the profile URL is not obvious.
Use the decimal profile number
- Open the player’s Steam profile.
- Copy the long decimal number from the profile URL, if the URL displays the numeric profile address.
- Confirm that the value is a 17-digit decimal number before adding it to the server file.
If the profile URL uses a custom name instead of digits, use a lookup service to resolve that profile to SteamID64. Check the returned profile carefully when several accounts have similar names; the wrong ID will simply fail authentication for the intended player.

Identifiers that do not belong in adminlist.txt

2. Locate the active adminlist.txt file
The correct folder depends on how the server was installed and whether the host changed the persistent data location. The filename is adminlist.txt, but several valid directory layouts are reported.

How to choose between multiple locations
- Check the host’s file manager for a
Settingsdirectory and an existingadminlist.txt. - Inspect the server launch parameters for
-persistentDataPath. An override means the active file is under that path rather than an unrelated default folder. - Use the directory that belongs to the running server instance, not a copy inside an unpacked server archive or an old backup.
- If the host exposes several V Rising installations, confirm the server name, save data, and startup configuration before editing.
If no file is visible, do not guess between directories. Follow the host’s documented Settings path or ask the host which persistent-data directory the running instance uses. Creating a file in an inactive folder will have no effect.
3. Edit adminlist.txt correctly
Open the active file as plain text. Put one SteamID64 on each line and nothing else.

Save the file with the exact name adminlist.txt. Avoid accidentally creating adminlist.txt.txt when a file manager hides extensions. After saving, reopen it and verify that every line still contains only the intended 17-digit value.
4. Decide whether to restart the server
Published instructions do not completely agree on reload behavior. Stunlock Studios’ legacy 1.0.x guidance is reported to allow an edited admin list to be used without a restart, while several hosting guides recommend restarting. Restarting after the edit is the safer operational choice because it makes the running instance reread the file from its active data path.

Use this sequence when you can schedule a restart:
- Stop the server cleanly through the host panel or service manager.
- Edit and save the active
adminlist.txt. - Start the server again and wait until it is ready for players.
- Reconnect the prospective administrator before testing authentication.
If a restart is not possible, you can still try the authentication step after saving, but treat a failure as a reason to verify the file path and then restart rather than repeatedly changing the ID.
5. Enable the console in the player’s game client
Console access is a client-side setting. Every player who needs to authenticate as an administrator must enable it in their own copy of V Rising.
- Launch V Rising.
- Open Options.
- Open the General section.
- Turn on Console Enabled.
- Apply the setting and return to the game.
This setting does not grant permission by itself. It only makes the command console available so the listed player can perform the authentication step.

6. Authenticate with adminauth
- Join the dedicated server with the Steam account whose SteamID64 is in the file.
- Press the tilde key,
~, to open the in-game console. - Type
adminauthand submit the command. - Wait for the game to confirm authentication, then use
listto display the admin commands available to your account.
The account must be connected with the same Steam identity that was entered in adminlist.txt. If adminauth fails, the command is usually working as designed: the server did not find the connected SteamID64 in the active admin list. Recheck the decimal ID, the file location, and the saved contents before trying again.

What an authenticated administrator can do
After successful authentication, the console exposes administrative commands. The available set can vary by game build, so use list on the server rather than relying on a command list from an older version.

Use a non-destructive command such as list to confirm access before testing moderation actions. Record who has access and remove an ID from the file when that person should no longer be a permanent administrator.

Troubleshooting failed authentication
adminauth says the player is not an administrator
- Confirm that the entry is the 17-digit decimal SteamID64, not a
STEAM_0:1:...value. - Remove names, quotes, comments, commas, and leading or trailing spaces.
- Check that the file is named exactly
adminlist.txt. - Verify that you edited the Settings folder used by the running server, especially when
-persistentDataPathappears in launch parameters. - Restart the server, reconnect, and run
adminauthagain.
The console does not open
- Return to Options > General and verify that Console Enabled is on.
- Press the tilde key,
~, while connected to the server rather than at a menu. - If the setting was changed while the game was running, leave the menu and try again after reconnecting.
The change works once but disappears after a restart
- Look for more than one V Rising server installation or save-data directory.
- Check whether the host panel regenerates configuration files from a template.
- Confirm that the ID was saved in the persistent Settings directory, not a temporary or archived copy.
Several administrators work, but one does not
Compare the failing player’s ID with the number in that player’s Steam profile. A single wrong digit is enough to prevent a match. Also check that the player is joining with the same Steam account whose ID was entered; a shared character name or display name is not a reliable identifier.
Version and path differences to keep in mind
Stunlock Studios’ official instructions referenced for this procedure cover the legacy 1.0.x branch. A newer guide refers to the 1.1 build, and hosting layouts differ even when the game version is the same. Before applying a version-specific command or file path, compare the server’s current build and launch configuration with the current documentation for that build.
The core workflow remains distinct from those version details: identify the correct SteamID64, place it in the active adminlist.txt, enable the client console, and authenticate with adminauth.
