To add an administrator on a dedicated The Forest server, set a value for serverPasswordAdmin in Server.cfg, restart the server, and have the person join using that password in the admin-password field. The game’s documented method is password-based; it does not provide a confirmed Steam-ID administrator list for The Forest.
How The Forest server administration works
The Forest grants multiplayer administration through a shared server password. The setting is serverPasswordAdmin. The official wiki describes it as the “Server administration password. Blank means no password.” A player who supplies the valid administration password while joining is allowed to use administrator commands in multiplayer chat.
This is separate from the password used to let ordinary players into a private server:

Changing serverPassword does not make someone an admin, and changing serverPasswordAdmin does not automatically change the normal join password. Treat the administration password as a privileged credential: anyone who knows it can attempt to use the server’s admin commands.

Before you change the configuration
- Make sure you are editing the configuration for the dedicated server instance that your players actually use. A machine can contain more than one installation or server profile.
- Stop the server or arrange a maintenance window. Changes made while the process is running require a restart before they take effect.
- Keep a backup copy of
Server.cfg. A backup lets you restore the previous values if a typo prevents startup or changes the intended access rules. - Choose a password that is not used for your Steam account, hosting account, operating-system login, or another service. Do not post it in public chat or a community channel.
Step 1: Open Server.cfg
Using a hosting provider’s control panel
Open the provider’s file manager or configuration editor, locate the server configuration files, and open Server.cfg. Search for serverPasswordAdmin. Providers may place the editor behind a “Configuration,” “Files,” or similarly named section, so the exact navigation labels vary.
On a self-hosted Windows server

This path is a community-provided location rather than a guarantee for every installation. If the file is not there, search the dedicated-server data directory for Server.cfg, or use the folder selected by your server startup and hosting configuration. Do not create a second file in an unrelated directory and expect the running server to read it.
Step 2: Set the administration password
- Open
Server.cfgin a plain-text editor or the provider’s configuration editor. - Find the existing line for
serverPasswordAdmin. If the file uses a blank value, replace only the value, preserving the setting name and the file’s syntax. - Enter the password you want administrators to use. For example, a configuration line may look like
serverPasswordAdmin=Use-A-Unique-Long-Password. Follow the spacing and quoting style already used by your file; do not add explanatory text to the line. - Save the file without changing its filename or extension. Avoid rich-text editors that can add formatting or a hidden
.txtextension.
If serverPasswordAdmin is absent, use the same key name shown in the server configuration documentation and keep the file’s existing format. A blank value means that no administration password is configured, so a player cannot authenticate as an administrator through this setting.
Step 3: Restart the dedicated server
Restart the server process after saving the file. A live process normally keeps the old configuration in memory; simply saving Server.cfg while players remain connected does not reliably apply the new password. Use the hosting panel’s restart control or stop and start the dedicated-server process according to your setup.

Wait for the server to finish starting before testing. If it fails to start, stop it again and check for a malformed line, an accidental filename change, or characters that the configuration parser does not accept. Restore the backup if necessary, then make one small change at a time.
Step 4: Have the new administrator join with the admin password
- Launch The Forest and open the multiplayer server browser.
- Select the dedicated-server source. A guide describes this as DEDICATED (INTERNET); wording can differ between game versions.
- Find the server by its configured name and select it.
- When the connection screen asks for credentials, enter the value of
serverPasswordAdminin the administrator-password field, not merely in the ordinary server-password field. - Complete the connection and wait until the player is fully in the multiplayer game. Test an admin command in chat only after the join has completed.
The exact arrangement of password boxes is not established for every current build. If the browser shows separate ordinary and administrator password fields, use the administrator field. If it shows only one field, check the server’s current in-game prompt and your host’s instructions rather than assuming that the normal join password grants privileges.
Step 5: Verify administrator access
Open in-game multiplayer chat by pressing Enter. The official wiki states that administrator commands are available to players who supplied a valid admin password when joining. A commonly documented check is to type /help; one guide says this displays the available commands after a successful admin login.

Use a harmless command or the help listing for your initial test. Do not test by changing world state or removing players unless you intentionally want that result. If the help command is not recognized, that alone does not prove the password is wrong: command names and the complete command list can vary by game version, and the current build’s full list is not confirmed here.

There is no separate “add user” list in the documented The Forest workflow. To grant access to another trusted player, give that person the same serverPasswordAdmin privately and have them join through the administrator-password field. You do not need to edit a Steam ID into a file for this method.
If you need to remove everyone who knows the old credential, change serverPasswordAdmin, save Server.cfg, and restart the server. All future administrator joins must use the new value. Changing the password is the practical revocation step when the credential has been shared too widely.

Why a Steam ID file may not work
No source confirms a per-Steam-ID administrator list for The Forest. The sequel, Sons of the Forest, is documented with an ownerswhitelist.txt file containing Steam64 IDs, but that arrangement should not be copied into the original game’s dedicated-server directory. A file from the sequel may be ignored, and an incorrectly edited configuration can create confusion about which server is being administered.
For the original game, use the documented shared-password mechanism unless a version-specific server update or hosting provider explicitly documents a different method.

Troubleshooting administrator login
The player can join but has no admin commands
- Confirm that the player entered
serverPasswordAdmin, notserverPassword. - Check the spelling and capitalization of the password. Re-enter it manually to avoid copying an extra space.
- Verify that the server was restarted after the file was saved.
- Make sure you edited the active instance’s
Server.cfg, especially if the host has multiple server profiles. - Have the player disconnect completely and reconnect with the administrator password. A session that began before the configuration change may not gain privileges mid-session.
The server still accepts the old password
The running process may not have been restarted, or the edit may have been made to a file that the server does not use. Stop the server, verify the path and timestamp of the active Server.cfg, save the intended value, and start the server again.
The server will not start after editing
- Restore the backup to confirm that the edit caused the failure.
- Check for a changed filename, a hidden
.txtextension, smart quotation marks, or accidental additional characters. - Reapply only the password value while preserving the original key name, separators, and line structure.
- Use the hosting provider’s configuration editor if it validates the file format more safely than a local editor.
The password prompt does not match a guide
Prompt labels and browser layouts can change between builds and hosting environments. The evidence available for this setup does not establish one universal current layout. Look for the administrator-password option, consult the host’s instructions for its server build, and avoid assuming that a regular join-password box provides administrator access.
Security practices for a shared admin password
- Give the password only to people who need administrator access.
- Use a long, unique value and store it in a password manager rather than in a public server description.
- Do not paste it into screenshots, stream overlays, chat logs, or support tickets.
- Rotate it immediately if a former administrator leaves, the password appears in a public message, or an unknown player appears to have command access.
- Keep a record of who has received the current password so you know when a rotation is necessary.
Because the credential is shared, the server does not distinguish one administrator from another through this mechanism. Anyone holding the current password receives the same admin capability when they authenticate.
