To add an administrator to a Conan Exiles server, set an admin password in the server settings, restart the server, and have the player claim administrator access in game. On a Windows dedicated server, the setting is normally in ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/ServerSettings.ini. On a rented server, the same value is usually entered through the host’s Conan Exiles server-settings panel.
Once the password is active, the player can open Settings > Server Settings, enter it, and select Make Me Admin, or use the console command MakeMeAdmin <yourpassword>. The command MakeMeNormal removes administrator status.

Conan Exiles does not ordinarily grant administration by adding a player name or Steam ID to a simple administrator list. The setup described for the server configuration uses one shared administrator password. The server owner places that password in the server settings, restarts the server so the setting is loaded, and then gives the password only to trusted people. Each trusted player claims administrator access from inside the game.
This creates two separate actions:
- Configure the server: set the administrator password in the server configuration or hosting panel and restart the server.
- Claim access: enter that password in the game’s server settings screen or with the console command.
A player who knows the public password used for ordinary server access is not automatically an administrator. Keep the administrator password different from any public player password.

Choose the instructions for your server type

The game steps are the same after the server has loaded the password. The file path above is the Windows-server path identified in the available setup guidance; do not assume it is correct for a Linux, Wine, console, or host-specific installation.
Before changing the server
- Make sure you can stop and start the server, either through the machine hosting it or through the rental provider’s control panel.
- Arrange a maintenance window. A restart disconnects current players.
- Know which installation you are changing. A server may have more than one Conan Exiles instance or configuration folder.
- Back up the existing settings file before editing it manually.
- Choose an administrator password that is different from the public player password.
- Share the administrator password only with people who should be able to use administrator tools.
If you rent the server, editing a local file on your own computer does not change the rented instance. Use the provider’s server-settings page unless the provider specifically gives you file access.

Set an admin password on a Windows dedicated server
1. Stop the server cleanly
Stop the Conan Exiles server before editing its settings. This prevents the running process from overwriting your change when it shuts down or saves configuration data. Warn connected players first if the server is public.
2. Open the server settings file
Navigate to the server’s Conan Exiles configuration folder:
ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/WindowsServerOpen ServerSettings.ini in a plain-text editor. The exact absolute path depends on where the server was installed, so use the folder belonging to the active server instance rather than searching for an unrelated copy.

3. Add or change the administrator password
In ServerSettings.ini, set the administrator password with this key:

AdminPassword=yourpasswordSome configurations place the key under a [ServerSettings] header. If the file already contains that header, put the setting in that section and change an existing AdminPassword entry instead of creating a second one. Replace yourpassword with the password you selected; do not leave the example text in place.
Keep the value in the format expected by the file: the key, an equals sign, and the password. Avoid editing unrelated settings while you are making this change. If the file contains duplicate entries, remove the extra administrator-password line so there is one unambiguous value.
4. Save the file and restart
Save ServerSettings.ini, close the editor, and start the server again. A restart is required for the server to load the new administrator password. Merely saving the file while the server continues running is not enough.
5. Test with a trusted account
Join the server with the player account that should receive administrator access. Use one of the in-game methods below. If the password is rejected, stop and check that you edited the active server’s file, saved the change, and restarted the correct process.

Set the password on a rented server
Most managed Conan Exiles servers expose server settings in the provider’s control panel. The field may appear on a Conan Exiles configuration, server settings, or gameplay-settings page rather than as a raw file editor.
- Open the control panel for the correct Conan Exiles instance.
- Stop the server if the panel requires it before changing settings.
- Open the Conan Exiles server-settings page.
- Find the administrator-password field, or the setting corresponding to
AdminPassword. - Enter a private administrator password that differs from the public player password.
- Save or apply the configuration.
- Restart the server from the panel.
- Join the restarted server and claim admin in game.
Panel labels and restart behavior are host-specific. If the panel offers both a general password and an administrator password, use the administrator field for this purpose. If a panel-generated configuration is later recreated, verify that the administrator setting is still present before troubleshooting the game command.
Claim administrator access in game
Method 1: Server Settings menu
- Join the Conan Exiles server after it has restarted with the administrator password configured.
- Press Esc to open the pause menu.
- Open Settings.
- Open Server Settings.
- Enter the server’s administrator password.
- Select or tick Make Me Admin.
The action applies to the player who enters the password. It does not add every member of a clan or every player on the server.
Method 2: Console command
If you have access to the in-game console, enter:
MakeMeAdmin <yourpassword>Replace <yourpassword> with the configured value. For example, if the configured value were ExampleAdminPass, the command would be:
MakeMeAdmin ExampleAdminPassDo not type the angle brackets shown in the syntax example; they indicate the value to replace. The command must be run while connected to the intended server, not in an unrelated local or chat field.

Remove administrator access
To remove administrator status from the current player, use:
MakeMeNormalThis reverses the in-game administrator status for the player who runs it. It does not delete the server’s configured administrator password. If that password is still configured, a trusted player can claim admin again. To prevent further claims, change or remove the administrator password in the server settings and restart the server.
Why adding a Steam ID is not the normal method
The available setup guidance describes administrator access as password-based rather than as a Steam-ID administrator list. An old forum discussion about automatic administration by Steam ID reportedly received a “Nope” reply, but that discussion is roughly a decade old and is not current official confirmation. Treat it as a warning not to assume that a Steam-ID entry will work, not as proof about every current game build.

Do not confuse administration with the join whitelist. The RCON command below controls whether a Steam ID is allowed to join a whitelisted server:
whitelistplayer <steamid>It does not grant administrator privileges. A player can be permitted to join and still have no administrator access; the administrator password and the MakeMeAdmin action are separate from whitelist management.

Troubleshooting failed administrator setup
The password is rejected in the game
- Check the active instance: confirm that the edited
ServerSettings.inibelongs to the server you joined. Multiple installations can have similarly named folders. - Confirm the setting name: use
AdminPassword, not a public-player password field or an invented Steam-ID entry. - Check the section: where the file uses a
[ServerSettings]header, place the key in that section. - Check for duplicate lines: leave one administrator-password entry with the intended value.
- Restart again: the server must reload the file after the change.
- Check the password exactly: make sure the value entered in the menu or command matches the value saved in the server settings.
The command appears to do nothing
- Run
MakeMeAdmin <yourpassword>while connected to the target server. - Confirm that the server has restarted since the password was set.
- Use the server-settings menu as an alternate method. If the menu works, the problem is likely with how the console command was entered rather than with the configured password.
- Do not substitute
whitelistplayer; that command addresses joining permission, not administration.
The setting disappears after a restart
On a managed server, the control panel may regenerate the configuration. Set the value through the panel’s Conan Exiles server-settings page and apply the change there. On a self-managed server, verify that you edited the file used by the process you actually restart and that the file was saved with the intended name and location.
The Windows path does not exist
The documented path applies to Windows dedicated servers. Linux and Wine installations can use a different directory layout, and the available setup information does not establish one universal Linux path. Do not create a new directory tree based on the Windows example and expect the game to read it. Identify the active configuration location from the installation or hosting documentation, then look for the equivalent ServerSettings.ini file and the AdminPassword setting.
A player can join but cannot become an administrator
Joining proves only that the player passed the server’s access controls. It does not prove that the administrator password was loaded or that the player has claimed admin status. Verify the configured value, restart, and use either Settings > Server Settings > Make Me Admin or MakeMeAdmin <yourpassword>.
Protect the administrator password
The administrator password is a shared credential. Anyone who obtains it can attempt to claim administrator status, so treat it differently from ordinary server information.
- Use a password that is not used for the public player password or another service.
- Send it privately to the people who need administrator access.
- Do not paste it into public chat, screenshots, support tickets, or configuration examples that other players can read.
- Keep a record of which trusted people received it.
- Change the configured value and restart the server when the group of authorized administrators changes.
- After changing it, have each continuing administrator claim access with the new value.
Changing the file or panel value controls future password validation after the server reloads it. Running MakeMeNormal is useful for removing the current player’s status, but it is not a replacement for changing a password that may have been shared too widely.
Operational checklist
- Identify whether the server is a Windows dedicated installation or a rented instance.
- Back up the existing configuration before manual editing.
- Set
AdminPassword=yourpasswordin the active server settings, under[ServerSettings]where that section is used. - Keep the administrator password different from the public player password.
- Save or apply the change.
- Restart the server.
- Join the restarted server.
- Use Settings > Server Settings, enter the password, and select Make Me Admin, or run
MakeMeAdmin <yourpassword>. - Use
MakeMeNormalwhen the current player should no longer have administrator status. - Use whitelist commands only for join permissions, never as a substitute for administrator setup.
Platform and version caveats
The exact Windows file path, AdminPassword key, and MakeMeAdmin command are the setup elements identified for this procedure. Host control panels can use different field names, and the available instructions do not establish a single Linux or Wine path. If a current game build or host panel does not expose these labels, consult that installation’s current configuration documentation before editing files or assuming that a Steam-ID method is supported.
There is no published statistic needed to complete this setup. The important distinction is functional: the administrator password grants admin access when claimed in game, while whitelistplayer governs who may join. Keeping those two controls separate prevents the most common configuration mistake.
