You generally can’t add a watermark in the free Adobe Acrobat Reader. Adobe’s Reader FAQ says editing PDFs requires Acrobat software, and its watermark instructions apply to Acrobat on desktop. If you don’t see Edit and Watermark in your app, you’ll need an editing-capable PDF editor to follow the steps below.
Reader or Acrobat: which one can add a watermark?
Free Acrobat Reader is primarily for viewing, printing, signing, sharing, and annotating PDFs. Adobe’s desktop watermark workflow uses editing tools, so the controls may not be available in Reader. Adobe’s guidance is to use Acrobat software for PDF editing. Adobe’s watermark instructions for Acrobat on desktop describe the applicable workflow.
A watermark is text or an image embedded on a PDF page—for example, to identify ownership, add branding, or mark content as confidential. Adobe distinguishes a watermark from a stamp.

- Open the PDF in Acrobat desktop and select Edit.
- In the left pane, select Watermark > Add.
- In the Add Watermark dialog, choose Text and enter your wording, or choose File to use an image.
- Set the watermark’s appearance. Adjust opacity, rotation, size, and placement; use the horizontal and vertical position controls to position it.
- Select OK to apply it.
For an image watermark, Adobe recommends a transparent PNG. Its desktop guide also lists PDF, JPEG, and BMP as supported image formats.

Apply a watermark to several PDFs
In Acrobat desktop, select Apply to Multiple Files from the watermark workflow, add the PDFs, confirm your selection, and choose where to save the processed files under Output Options. Review the saved PDFs to make sure the watermark appears as intended.
If Watermark or Update is unavailable
- You can’t find Watermark: Confirm that you’re using Acrobat desktop’s editing workflow, not assuming the feature is available in free Reader.
- The PDF won’t accept the change: Check its security and permissions. Adobe notes that watermark updates may not work on secured PDFs or PDFs with form fields.
- You’re replacing an existing watermark: Use Update cautiously. Adobe says it updates only the first watermark added and removes any additional watermarks. Inspect the result before saving or replacing the original.
