To add a resource pack to a Minecraft Java server, put the pack in a ZIP file, host that ZIP at a direct HTTP(S) download URL, calculate its SHA-1 digest in lowercase hexadecimal, and add the URL and digest to server.properties. Restart the server after saving the file.
Set require-resource-pack=false when players may decline the download. Set it to true when joining players must accept the pack; players who cannot download or accept a required pack are disconnected. The digest must be regenerated whenever the ZIP changes, even if its filename and URL stay the same.
How the server resource-pack system works
The Minecraft Java server does not store the resource-pack file for clients and does not turn a local file path into a download. It sends each client the URL in server.properties. The client then downloads the ZIP directly from that web address and checks the downloaded bytes against the SHA-1 value you supplied.
That arrangement creates three separate jobs:
- File delivery: a web host must make the ZIP available through a direct HTTP or HTTPS URL.
- File identification:
resource-pack-sha1tells the client which exact ZIP it should have received. - Player policy:
require-resource-packdetermines whether declining the pack is allowed.
Clients cache packs by SHA-1, not by the visible filename or URL. If you replace a ZIP while keeping the old digest, players can continue using the old cached copy. A changed archive therefore requires a newly calculated digest and a server restart.

What you need before editing the server
- A running Minecraft Java server and permission to stop it and edit its
server.propertiesfile. - The finished resource pack as a ZIP archive.
- A direct download URL that players can reach without logging in, completing a web form, or viewing an HTML download page.
- The SHA-1 digest of the exact ZIP available at that URL.
- A maintenance window for saving the configuration and restarting the server.
- A test account or player who can join after the change.
The procedure applies to Java Edition servers. Bedrock Edition uses a different resource-pack configuration and is not covered by these properties.
Choose where to host the ZIP
The URL in resource-pack must point to the file itself. A link that opens a hosting service’s landing page, requires authentication, or redirects to a private session is not a dependable pack URL. Test the address in a private browser window or with a download tool before giving it to the server.

Do not assume that a URL ending in .zip is direct, or that a browser preview proves the server can fetch it. A reliable test downloads the archive itself and lets you open it locally.
Prepare and test the resource-pack ZIP
Keep one definitive archive
Choose the exact ZIP that players should receive and keep it unchanged while calculating the digest. If you edit textures, sounds, models, or metadata afterward, you have a different file and must repeat the hash step.

Check the download address
- Upload the ZIP to your chosen host.
- Copy the host’s direct HTTP(S) download address, not a dashboard or preview address.
- Open the address in a private browser session. It should start downloading the ZIP without an account or an interactive confirmation.
- Compare the downloaded file with the local archive. Calculate the digest from the same bytes that the URL serves.
If the host silently replaces, recompresses, or redirects the file, calculate the digest after that process or download the served file and hash that copy. The client compares the downloaded bytes, not the archive you intended to upload.
Calculate the required SHA-1 digest
resource-pack-sha1 accepts a 40-character SHA-1 digest written as lowercase hexadecimal. A 64-character value is not a SHA-1 digest for this setting. Uppercase letters can produce a vanilla-client “pack hash mismatch” error, so normalize the result before saving it.

Windows PowerShell
From the folder containing the archive, run:
(Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA1 .my-pack.zip).Hash.ToLowerInvariant()This prints the value directly in lowercase. The commonly used form Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA1 .my-pack.zip also works, but PowerShell may display alphabetic digits in uppercase; copy only the 40-character hash and convert it to lowercase.
Linux or macOS
Use the SHA-1 utility available on your system:
sha1sum my-pack.zipOn systems that provide shasum, the equivalent is:
shasum -a 1 my-pack.zipIn each output, the digest is the hexadecimal string before the filename. It must contain exactly 40 characters, use characters 0-9 and a-f, and describe the same ZIP served by your URL.

Sanity-check the value
- Count 40 hexadecimal characters, not 64.
- Remove leading or trailing spaces when pasting into
server.properties. - Use lowercase letters.
- Recalculate after every archive replacement.
- If two machines produce different values, they are hashing different bytes; download the hosted file and hash that copy.
Edit server.properties
Stop the server first
Use the server console’s normal stop command or the control panel’s stop action. Editing while the process is writing its configuration can overwrite your changes. Make a backup copy of server.properties before changing it.
Add or replace the resource-pack entries
Open the file in a plain-text editor. Set one property per line. This example uses a fictional URL and digest; replace both with your own values.

Requiring a pack is an access decision, not merely a visual preference. Use it only when every joining player can reach the download host and your pack is maintained reliably. For a mixed audience, optional delivery avoids turning a temporary hosting problem into a server-wide login barrier.

Restart and verify the configuration
- Save
server.propertieswhile the server is stopped. - Start the server normally.
- Watch the startup console for a malformed property, failed configuration load, or other error.
- Join with a client that can reach the download URL.
- When the resource-pack dialog appears, inspect the wording and choose Accept for the test.
- Confirm that a texture, sound, model, or other deliberately changed asset appears in game.
- For an optional pack, reconnect once and choose Decline to verify that the server still allows play.
- For a required pack, test a refusal or failed download only with an account you are prepared to disconnect; the expected result is that the client cannot remain on the server.
If the dialog never appears, check that the edited file belongs to the server instance you actually started, that the property names are spelled exactly, and that the server was restarted after the edit.

“Pack hash mismatch”
The digest does not describe the bytes the client downloaded. Download the ZIP directly from the configured URL, calculate its SHA-1 again, convert the result to lowercase, and replace resource-pack-sha1. Check for an accidental 64-character value, an uppercase letter, a truncated paste, or a host that replaced the archive after you calculated the original value.
The client reports a download error
Open the URL outside Minecraft. If it displays an HTML page, asks for authentication, expires, redirects through a private token, or is unavailable, it is not a dependable direct pack URL. Correct the hosting address, confirm that the ZIP can be downloaded from the player’s network, and restart the server after changing the property.
Players keep seeing the previous pack
The client cache is keyed by SHA-1. Replacing a file while leaving the old digest tells the client that nothing has changed. Recalculate the digest for the new archive, update the property, and restart. If the URL itself changes, update that value as well. Have a test player connect again only after both settings refer to the new file.

Players can decline when you expected enforcement
Check that the server is using require-resource-pack=true, not an older key such as force-resource-pack, and that you restarted the correct server instance. Enforcement is documented for Minecraft 1.17 and later; older versions may not implement the modern property in the same way. A required pack also cannot be enforced successfully when its URL is unreachable or its digest is wrong, because the client cannot complete the required download.
The custom message is malformed
resource-pack-prompt uses a JSON text component. Keep the value in the compact form shown earlier, use straight quotation marks, and escape any quotation mark inside the message according to JSON rules. Remove the property temporarily to restore the default wording if you are unsure whether your JSON is valid.

Older tutorials may call the digest setting resource-pack-hash or the enforcement setting force-resource-pack. The current names used for this procedure are resource-pack-sha1 and require-resource-pack. Do not add both versions hoping they will combine; use the keys supported by the server version you run.
HTTPS advice conflicts with an old tutorial
An older guide reported HTTPS problems around Minecraft 1.16 and suggested also serving the file over HTTP. That is historical advice, not a universal requirement for current servers. Prefer a working HTTPS address, test it from an actual player network, and use HTTP only when your controlled environment proves that HTTPS cannot be reached. Never assume a protocol change fixes a hash mismatch; the digest still has to match the downloaded ZIP.
Safely update a pack after launch
Treat every pack revision as a new artifact. This avoids stale client caches and makes rollback possible.
- Create the revised ZIP and keep the previous archive as a backup.
- Upload the revised file to the hosting location, or publish it at a new direct URL if your host cannot replace files safely.
- Download the file from the public URL and calculate its SHA-1.
- Convert the digest to lowercase and check that it has 40 characters.
- Stop the server and update
resource-packif the URL changed, then updateresource-pack-sha1with the new value. - Save the file and restart the server.
- Join with a test client and verify a changed asset before announcing the update.
If you need an immediate rollback, restore the previous ZIP and its matching previous digest, then restart. Keeping URL, archive, and digest together prevents a rollback that accidentally serves one version while identifying another.
