A Game Boy Pro Sound mod adds a line-level audio output by tapping the console’s audio before its stock headphone amplification. It is primarily for recording or feeding audio to external equipment—not a way to make the built-in speaker louder. On an original Game Boy (DMG), choose a pre-pot tap for a cleaner, fixed-level signal or a post-pot tap if you want the volume wheel to control the output. Decide first whether to repurpose the headphone jack or install a separate connector, then follow a wiring diagram for your exact board revision.
What a Pro Sound mod changes
The mod takes the Game Boy’s audio signal before the stock headphone amplification and routes it to an external connector. That bypass can provide a cleaner line source for recording than the stock headphone output, which is amplified for listening rather than intended as a recording feed. The output may be too quiet to drive headphones comfortably because the headphone amplifier is bypassed.
A Pro Sound mod is therefore different from an internal speaker or amplifier upgrade. If your aim is louder speaker playback, this is not the wiring change to start with.

Choose the pickup point
| Approach | Signal and volume control | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-pot | Taps the signal before the volume potentiometer. It is closest to the audio source and is usually the cleanest option; the Game Boy volume wheel does not control its level. | A relatively clean, fixed-level line output for recording or external audio equipment. |
| Post-pot | Taps the signal after the potentiometer. The volume wheel continues to control the output, but the original pot can add signal loss or variation. | Users who want to adjust line-output level with the console’s volume wheel. |
Neither option is a universal wiring map: use the audio points shown for your exact DMG board revision.

Choose where the output goes
Reuse the stock headphone jack
Repurposing the original jack is the quickest, least intrusive connector option. It becomes a line output, however, so it no longer provides convenient headphone listening. If you want to listen on headphones, plan on connecting an external headphone amplifier to the line output.
Add a dedicated connector
A separate 3.5 mm, jack or RCA connector leaves the original headphone jack and speaker path available. It requires cutting the shell, mounting the connector and routing wires carefully. Check that the shell closes without pressing wires against screw posts or other pinch points.

- Package include: 1 x Speaker
- The sound quality and volume are also adjusted as the original.
- Please compare the pictures and descriptions carefully, check the model of your machine and make sure it is what you need.
- The console sound is low, usually not the speaker is damaged. The audio chip is damaged. Power amplifier capacitance aging. The volume adjustment knob is rusty. These reasons can lead to very low sound.
Before adding amplification, check the existing audio
An amplifier raises the console’s inherent noise along with the wanted sound. If the problem is weak or faulty audio rather than the need for a recording output, clean the power switch and volume wheel and check for faulty capacitors first. Replace the speaker if it is damaged or weak, using one matched to the console; iFixit’s Game Boy speaker replacement guide covers that repair. The Game Boy Resource treats speaker replacement and audio amplifiers as separate audio-mod categories, which is a useful distinction: neither replaces Pro Sound line-out wiring.

- Identify the console and board revision. Confirm that you have an original Game Boy (DMG) and identify its board revision before choosing connection points.
- Choose pre-pot or post-pot. Use pre-pot when a cleaner, fixed-level output matters most; choose post-pot if you need volume-wheel control.
- Choose the connector. Decide whether to repurpose the headphone jack or add a dedicated connector that preserves the original headphone function.
- Prepare the work. Gather fine hookup wire, soldering equipment and insulation. A new connector also calls for shell-cutting tools and a plan for mounting it.
- Use a matching diagram. Follow a model- and board-specific wiring diagram for the audio points. DMG, Pocket, Color and Advance layouts are not interchangeable.
- Route and secure the wires. Leave enough slack to open the shell for service, while keeping wires clear of screw posts and closing surfaces that could pinch them.
- Test before closing. Check the line output, the headphone path if retained, and the speaker. Confirm that the case closes without trapping wires.
These steps describe the decisions and checks involved, not a pin-by-pin solder map. The available guides do not establish one universal wiring map for every DMG revision; do not guess at board pads or apply another model’s diagram.

- This replacement speakers for GBC or GBA original systems
- Sometimes the system speakers may burn out. This will prevent your system from making sound. Sometimes the speakers of the system may be corroded. This will allow your system to produce only very faint sounds. If this is the case, replacing the speaker is the solution
- These replacement speakers will save your time and effort
- Installation technology is required, which will test your hands-on ability. You will need to solder these speakers in
- Note:These speakers will not work for GBA SP system
Diagnose quiet headphone output after the mod
Quiet headphones can be an expected result, not necessarily a failed installation: the line output bypasses the Game Boy’s headphone amplifier. Connect an external headphone amplifier between the modded output and the headphones. If the goal is louder playback through the console’s speaker, investigate the speaker and the console’s existing audio condition instead of expecting the line-out modification to increase speaker volume.

This workflow applies to the original Game Boy (DMG) concept. Pocket, Color and Advance consoles use different board layouts, so their connection points require diagrams made for those models. No single wiring map or kit availability is established here for every model and revision.
