There is no documented YouTube URL parameter that forces a video preview to appear. If you mean YouTube’s three-second hover or scroll preview, YouTube chooses it automatically for eligible videos. If you mean a link that starts at a specific moment, use Start at. If you need a playable video on your site, embed it. A thumbnail or messaging-app card is controlled by YouTube, the creator, or the receiving app—not by adding ?preview= to a watch URL.
What “preview” can mean
Before changing a link, identify the result you actually want. These options look similar but are controlled by different systems:

Can a URL parameter turn on YouTube’s three-second preview?
No. YouTube describes video previews as three-second clips that may play when someone hovers over a thumbnail on a computer or scrolls past a video in mobile search. They can appear on Home, Subscriptions, watch pages, and search results. YouTube says previews are available for most videos longer than 30 seconds, but eligibility is not guaranteed, and YouTube selects a clip from the first half of the video. That means a viewer cannot add a reliable preview query parameter to a watch link. Changing the URL will not force an animated thumbnail, select the three-second segment, or make a third-party app display a card.

Make a link start at a particular moment
If “preview” means “let the recipient begin at the interesting part,” create a timestamp link. This changes playback position, not the thumbnail or animation.
- Open the video on YouTube.
- Select Share.
- Enable or select Start at.
- Enter the time, such as
2:30. - Copy the generated URL and share it.
When opened, the video starts at the selected time (subject to normal YouTube playback behavior). YouTube documents this workflow, including a 2:30 example, in Share videos and channels.
What a timestamp link does not do
- It does not force YouTube’s three-second preview.
- It does not choose a thumbnail for Messages, email, or social networks.
- It does not create a playable mini-video inside a chat application.
Put the video on a website with an embed
For a player on a page you control, use YouTube’s embed flow rather than modifying an ordinary watch URL.

- Copy the generated
<iframe>. - Paste it into your page’s HTML or the site builder’s HTML block.
YouTube documents the embed options in Embed videos & playlists. To begin playback at a known point, add the documented start= parameter to the embed URL (the value is seconds). For example:

This places a YouTube player on your page; it does not alter how the original watch link previews in a chat app. YouTube also documents the privacy-enhanced host www.youtube-nocookie.com for embeds. That is an embedding choice, not a preview-card switch.
Change the video’s thumbnail
If you own the channel and want a different still image, use YouTube Studio. Open the video’s details, use the thumbnail controls to upload a custom image or choose a suggested option, then save. YouTube says custom thumbnails for videos require a verified account; its documentation also notes that the thumbnail is used as the preview image in the embedded player. Instructions are in Add custom thumbnails on YouTube.
A thumbnail edit does not change the watch URL and cannot guarantee that an external app will show that image. Each service may fetch, resize, cache, or replace link imagery.
Why a YouTube link may or may not show a card
When you paste a YouTube URL into Messages, email, or a social network, the receiving service requests information and decides whether to render a card. The sender generally cannot insert metadata into YouTube’s page. Apple explains publisher-controlled rich previews for webpages with Open Graph metadata in TN3156: Create rich previews for Messages; that guidance applies to a webpage you operate, not to a YouTube watch page.

Preview behavior can also depend on account, privacy, network, app settings, and cache state. A link that displays an image for one recipient may appear as plain text for another. Separately, YouTube says links in Shorts comments and Shorts descriptions are non-clickable, while other placements can support clickable links subject to feature access; this is distinct from whether another app generates a card. Troubleshooting
The URL contains ?preview=, but nothing happens
Remove the unsupported parameter. Use YouTube’s Share menu for a timestamp, or the Embed flow for a player. There is no documented parameter that forces the three-second preview.
The recipient sees no image
The receiving app may not fetch previews, may be offline, may block remote content, or may have cached an earlier result. Send the plain URL and, if context matters, add the timestamp in your message. You cannot force another service to render a card for a YouTube page.

The timestamp starts at the wrong place
Recreate the link with Share → Start at and verify the time format. A timestamp is a playback instruction; ads, restrictions, removed videos, or a changed video can affect what the viewer experiences.

The embed is blank or blocked
Check that the video owner allows embedding, that the video is public or otherwise available to the viewer, and that your page preserves the complete iframe. A watch URL is not interchangeable with an embed URL.
The thumbnail change is unavailable
Confirm that you are editing the correct video and that the channel meets YouTube’s verification requirement for custom thumbnails. Save the change in Studio, then allow external apps time to refresh cached imagery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make a YouTube preview play automatically when someone opens a link?
No. YouTube controls its preview behavior, and autoplay is also affected by browser and app policies. A timestamp link only sets the playback starting position.
Will shortening a YouTube URL create a better preview card?
No. A shortener changes the address and redirect path; it does not add metadata or force the receiving app to fetch a thumbnail.

Not to YouTube’s page. Open Graph tags can control previews for a webpage you own, while the YouTube watch page and receiving app control their own metadata and rendering.
The Bottom Line
Use Start at for a link that begins at a moment, Embed for a player on your site, and YouTube Studio for a thumbnail. You cannot force YouTube’s automatic three-second preview or another app’s link card by editing the URL.
