You generally cannot add a PlayStation account to an Xbox friends list. To play together across the two consoles, the game itself has to support cross-platform play, and you add the other player through that game’s own friends or invite feature. Start inside the game, not in either console’s system menus.
Why a PlayStation friend request does not carry over to Xbox
PlayStation friends are managed by PlayStation Network. When you send a request on a PlayStation console, that request adds the player to your PlayStation friends list and nothing else. The PlayStation support guidance reviewed for this article describes no route that adds that same account to an Xbox system friends list, so do not expect the request to appear on the Xbox side.
The two systems are separate. Platform-level friends belong to each console’s network, while cross-platform friends exist only where a specific game has built its own social layer that spans both platforms. Because the sources describe these as different systems, a PlayStation friend you add will not automatically be reachable from an Xbox console.

Adding someone on PlayStation is still useful, because it lets you find them by name and see their profile. The steps differ by console generation.

On PS5
- Press the PS button on your controller.
- Open Game Base, then select Friends.
- Choose Search for players.
- Search by the player’s real name or online ID.
- Open the profile you want and select Add Friend.
On PS4
- Open Friends from the home screen.
- Select Search and enter the player’s online ID.
- Select the matching profile, then choose Add to Friends.
PlayStation support notes that search results, and who is allowed to send you a request, depend on your privacy settings. If a profile does not appear, check those settings before assuming the account is wrong.
Step 2: Connect with the friend inside a cross-play game
This is the step that matters for Xbox. Cross-play friends are handled by the game, and the menu names change from title to title. Look for an option labelled Friends, Social, Cross-play, or Invite. The PlayStation guidance reviewed says the way to invite players from within a game can differ by game, so the exact path is not the same everywhere.

Before you start, confirm three things in the game:

Check that the title supports play between Xbox and PlayStation. Cross-platform support varies by game, and many titles support only some platform pairs.
- Identifier. Find out which name the game uses. It may ask for a gamertag, a PlayStation online ID, or an in-game player ID. Do not assume your PlayStation online ID is the identifier the game’s social system uses.
- Account and subscription requirements. The game may require a particular sign-in account or a platform online subscription on each console.
Without a named game, exact button-by-button steps for the Xbox side cannot be given with confidence. Identify the game and both console versions first, then follow that game’s own menus.

Example: Minecraft
The PlayStation Store listing for Minecraft says the game supports cross-platform play across console, mobile, and PC. The same listing says online multiplayer on console requires a Microsoft Account and a platform-specific online subscription, which is sold separately. Those are the two requirements to check first for that game.
Minecraft is one example of a listed cross-platform title. It does not show that every game works this way, and the steps for adding a friend inside another title may be different.

Troubleshooting
The PlayStation profile cannot be found
- Check the spelling of the online ID or real name you searched.
- Review the privacy settings on the account you are searching for, since they control whether it appears in search results.
You cannot send a friend request
- Check the privacy settings that control who can send requests on PlayStation.
- Confirm that you are signed in to the PlayStation account you intend to use.
The game does not show a way to add a cross-platform friend
- The title may not support cross-play between Xbox and PlayStation. Check the game’s own support or store information for its platform list.
- Look for the friend or invite option in a different menu, since labels vary.
Online console play is not working
- For Minecraft on console, confirm you are signed in with a Microsoft Account and that the relevant platform online subscription is active.
- For other games, confirm the subscription and sign-in requirements listed by that game’s publisher.
Checking the cross-play status, the identifier the game uses, and the account requirements usually resolves the problem before anything else needs to change.
