Add a payment option only when the additional completed orders it generates are worth more than its full incremental cost. To find out, evaluate the method for the customers and transactions it is meant to serve, account for who pays each fee, and measure contribution margin per eligible checkout—not just the option’s adoption or overall conversion rate.

Start with the customers the new option is meant to help

Define the gap before choosing a payment method. Is a particular country, buyer group, device context, or transaction size poorly served by the choices already available? Estimate how many checkouts are actually eligible for the new option. A method relevant to one market or segment may have little value across the rest of the marketplace.

Customer fit is local. Payment choices can differ in convenience, fraud exposure, and transaction speed, so compare those trade-offs for the intended audience rather than assuming a method will improve conversion everywhere. Stripe’s guide to payment methods for e-commerce and marketplaces offers directional context on those differences; it is not evidence that a particular option will lift your marketplace’s sales.

Calculate the full incremental cost

There is no single universal price for adding a payment option. Provider pricing may combine a fixed processing charge with a fee that depends on the payment method, and rates vary by geography. Adyen describes this structure on its supported payment methods pricing page. Use your current contracted rates for a decision; a public pricing page is not a substitute for the agreement that applies to your marketplace.

  • With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
  • Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
  • Process chip cards in just two seconds.
  • Get your money as soon as the next business day.
  • Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.

Include more than the headline processing rate. Adyen’s transaction-fee documentation describes costs such as interchange, scheme fees, and provider commission or markup. Some processing costs are aggregated and cannot be allocated to individual payments, so your per-transaction model may need a reasonable allocation method rather than a precise invoice-level figure.

  • Provider and method-specific charges, including fixed and percentage components.
  • Network or interchange costs where applicable, plus any charges that can arise from refused or cancelled payments.
  • Refunds, disputes, fraud losses, and the operational work required to resolve them.
  • Settlement or payout effects, reconciliation effort, implementation, and customer or seller support.

Separate costs incurred per successful payment from those that may accrue even when a payment does not complete. That distinction matters when the new option changes authorization outcomes or increases attempts without producing more completed orders.

Decide who bears each fee

Model the economics for the platform, sellers, and customers separately. A provider’s default accounting does not necessarily match the marketplace’s intended commercial arrangement. Decide which costs remain with the platform, which are allocated to sellers, and how each charge will appear in settlement and reconciliation.

Adyen documents split instructions that can book specified transaction fees to different marketplace balance accounts. This can support fee allocation, but it does not make the cost disappear: assess the resulting platform and seller economics and confirm how your setup records and settles the amounts.

  • With Square Handheld, you can accept payments, take tableside orders, or scan barcodes anywhere. With a slim design and comfortable grip, the POS is easy to carry in your palm or pocket. • Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one simple rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts required.

If you are considering a customer surcharge, treat it as a separate commercial and compliance decision—not a simple way to make the payment option margin-neutral. Adyen describes surcharge as a way for marketplace users to pass acceptance fees to customers and says agreements must address how the fee is charged. Check applicable market rules, card-scheme requirements, provider terms, contracts, and customer disclosures before implementation. See Adyen’s marketplace surcharge documentation.

Forecast whether the option adds profitable orders

Estimate only the orders that would not otherwise have completed through an existing payment method. Counting all transactions made with the new option as incremental overstates its value when buyers simply switch from another choice.

Incremental contribution = incremental completed orders × contribution per order − incremental payment fees − incremental fraud, refund, dispute, support, and operating costs.

Apply this calculation to the eligible segment and a defined period. Use observed results from a controlled rollout where feasible, or a cautious forecast when testing is not yet possible. Make assumptions explicit, especially the share of transactions expected to be genuinely incremental and the costs that are difficult to attribute to individual payments.

Roll out to a defined segment and measure the economics

Where practical, offer the option to a defined eligible group and compare it with a holdout or a baseline agreed before launch. Measure the outcomes together; no single metric shows whether the option improved marketplace economics.

  • Selection of the new method, successful authorization, and completed checkout.
  • Checkout completion and average order value.
  • Refunds, disputes, fraud losses, and related support contacts.
  • Contribution margin per eligible checkout, including the costs identified in your model.

Break results down by country, device, seller category, and transaction value when sample sizes support a meaningful comparison. Stripe Connect describes features such as conditional payment pricing and margin reports on its online marketplace payments page. These are provider capabilities, not evidence that an experiment will produce a positive result; confirm current feature availability and commercial terms with the provider.

Set a decision rule before launch

Agree on the review period and minimum acceptable result in advance. This makes it less likely that weak results will be excused after launch or that a method will be kept simply because customers have started using it.

  • Keep it if measured incremental contribution is positive and seller and customer outcomes remain acceptable.
  • Adjust it if results miss the threshold but point to a fixable issue, such as eligibility, routing, pricing, or fee allocation.
  • Restrict or remove it if it adds cost without enough incremental value for the segment it serves.

The decision should reflect the full operating result, not adoption alone. A popular option can still erode margin if most of its transactions replace existing payment methods or if its fees, risk, and service costs exceed the value of the orders it adds.

Compare candidate methods on the same basis

When several options could serve the segment, evaluate each against the same criteria. This helps avoid choosing a method because one attractive metric—such as a quoted rate or expected usage—hides a weaker overall fit.
