To put live chat on screen in a YouTube podcast broadcast, add a chat-overlay URL from a compatible provider to your encoder as a Browser Source, size it to your video canvas, and test it in a live stream before relying on it. This makes chat part of the outgoing video. A YouTube chat embed placed on a website is a different feature: it shows chat on that webpage, not as an overlay in the broadcast.
Choose where chat should appear
| Approach | What viewers see | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder browser-source overlay | Chat composited into the broadcast video | A compatible overlay URL from a provider and an encoder with Browser Source support |
| YouTube chat iframe | Chat on a separate external webpage | The video ID and an embed_domain matching that webpage’s domain |
YouTube describes encoders as a way to stream overlays and external audio or video hardware. Its instructions for adding a Browser Source concern YouTube’s own break overlay, however, not a universal audience-chat overlay. The exact steps for a chat overlay depend on the provider and encoder.
How do I put chat on screen in OBS?
The process is similar in any encoder that supports browser sources. The overlay provider must give you a URL intended for an on-stream overlay; do not substitute YouTube’s external-site chat iframe URL.

In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or open the stream. Configure your encoder with YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. Keep the key private. Check the stream preview in Live Control Room before starting the broadcast.
- Get an overlay URL. In the chat-overlay provider’s dashboard, create or select an overlay and copy its browser or widget URL. Provider interfaces vary, so use that provider’s instructions to identify the URL designed for an encoder Browser Source.
- Add it in OBS. In the scene used for the podcast, add a Browser Source and paste the provider’s overlay URL. Set its width and height to suit the stream canvas resolution. YouTube’s own overlay instructions use this Browser Source pattern and recommend matching dimensions to the stream resolution.
- Position and style it. Place chat where it will not obscure the podcast video, captions, lower thirds, or other essential graphics. Check that text is legible at the size viewers will see on a phone as well as on a desktop.
- Test the actual broadcast layout. Start a test stream or otherwise verify the live encoder output, then view it as an audience member. Confirm that chat appears, updates, and stays readable. Test the operating pattern you intend to use for the always-on show, including any planned encoder or network restarts.
How do I add live chat to my YouTube stream without putting it in the video?
If you want chat alongside a video on your own website, YouTube documents an iframe embed. Its chat embed needs the video’s ID, and the embed_domain must match the domain of the page containing the iframe. This embeds chat on that site; it does not create a styled graphic in OBS or add chat to the YouTube broadcast itself. YouTube also states that live chat is available on watch pages, not embedded players.

What to verify for an always-on podcast
- Overlay compatibility: Confirm that the provider’s URL is intended for browser-source use and works in your encoder.
- Canvas fit: Check the browser source dimensions against the stream resolution, then inspect the result at normal viewing size.
- Continuity: Provider and encoder behavior across restarts is not established by YouTube’s overlay guidance. Test the combination you plan to run; do not assume chat reconnects or persists automatically.
- Stream key safety: Use the key in your encoder’s stream settings and do not share it. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Rights and channel rules: Adding a chat graphic does not change YouTube’s copyright or monetization requirements. Use podcast audio, video, and other material you have the right to stream, and review YouTube’s current policies for your channel and content.
Common problems and fixes
- Browser source is blank: Check that the URL is the provider’s overlay URL, not the external-site iframe, and confirm the provider’s overlay is active. Recheck the URL and provider-specific setup.
- Chat is cropped or too small: Adjust the source width and height to fit the canvas, then resize and reposition it within the scene. Verify readability in the stream preview.
- Chat covers podcast graphics: Move the source to a clear area of the scene or change the overlay layout in the provider’s dashboard.
- It works before a restart but not afterward: Test the provider and encoder together through the restart or connection interruption you expect. If it fails to return, consult the provider’s reconnection guidance; automatic recovery cannot be assumed from YouTube’s overlay instructions.
- Chat appears on a website but not in the stream: The iframe is for an external webpage. Add the provider’s compatible overlay URL as a Browser Source in the encoder to composite chat into the broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the podcast itself is a prerecorded video or playlist, StreamNeo can keep a YouTube stream playing from the cloud: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; automatic recovery is available if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo handles uploaded videos, not a live camera, and chat-overlay compatibility and persistence should still be tested with the encoder and overlay you choose.
