You can activate Windows 11 Pro from an elevated Command Prompt with Microsoft’s slmgr.vbs tool. You need a valid Windows 11 Pro product key, a digital license for Pro, or access to an authorized organization volume-activation service.
Command Prompt cannot generate a license or bypass activation. A KMS client key found online is not a free retail license and will not activate a personal PC through Microsoft’s public activation servers.
Before you activate Windows 11 Pro
Check these points first:
- You have a valid 25-character Windows 11 Pro product key, or the PC has a Windows 11 Pro digital license.
- The installed edition is actually Windows 11 Pro.
- The PC is connected to the internet if you are performing online activation.
- You will open Command Prompt with administrator permissions.
The license and installed edition must match. A Windows 11 Home, Enterprise, Education, Pro Education, or Pro for Workstations key cannot automatically be assumed to activate Windows 11 Pro.

To see the Windows version in a graphical window, press Windows + R, type winver, and press Enter.

You can also query the installed edition from Command Prompt:
DISM /Online /Get-CurrentEditionLook for the Current Edition value in the output. If it says Professional, the installed edition is Windows 11 Pro. If it says Core, the PC is running Windows 11 Home.
Open Command Prompt as administrator
- Select Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes when User Account Control asks for permission.
The title bar should normally say Administrator: Command Prompt. The activation commands can fail or be refused if the window is not elevated.
Activate Windows 11 Pro with a product key
Use the following two commands. Replace the placeholder with the Windows 11 Pro key you own.
1. Install the product key
cscript.exe %windir%system32slmgr.vbs /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXXThe /ipk option installs or replaces the product key currently stored in Windows. Do not include brackets or quotation marks around the key.
2. Activate online
cscript.exe %windir%system32slmgr.vbs /atoThe /ato option tells Windows to attempt activation using the installed key. The PC must be online, and Microsoft’s activation service must be reachable.
Installing a key successfully with /ipk does not prove that Windows is activated. Always run /ato and verify the result afterward.

3. Restart if Windows asks you to
After changing the product key, restart Windows if requested. Microsoft also notes that restarting the Software Protection service can help avoid licensing-service instability after /ipk.
Verify Windows 11 Pro activation from CMD
Run these commands in the same elevated Command Prompt.
Display basic license information
cscript.exe %windir%system32slmgr.vbs /dliDisplay detailed licensing information
cscript.exe %windir%system32slmgr.vbs /dlvCheck whether activation is permanent
cscript.exe %windir%system32slmgr.vbs /xprThe /xpr command displays the activation expiration information. A properly activated retail or digital-license installation will normally report that Windows is permanently activated. Volume-licensed installations may show a renewal or expiration date because they must periodically contact the organization’s activation infrastructure.

Activate Windows 11 Pro through Settings instead
If you prefer not to use Command Prompt, use the current Windows 11 path:

- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Activation.
- Expand Change product key, then select Change.
- Enter your 25-character Windows 11 Pro key and follow the prompts.
This method uses the same legitimate activation entitlement. It does not avoid the requirement for a valid key or digital license.
What to do if you have a digital license
A digital license does not require you to enter a product key. Connect the PC to the internet and sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the Windows 11 Pro license. If the same edition was previously activated on that device, Windows will usually reactivate automatically.
Check the result at Settings > System > Activation. If the PC recently received a significant hardware change, especially a motherboard replacement:

- Open Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Choose the hardware-change reactivation option if it appears.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account previously linked to the digital license.
The troubleshooter cannot transfer every license to new hardware. Eligibility depends on the license terms and the type of hardware change.

A Windows 11 Pro key does not activate a Windows 11 Home installation merely because you run /ato. The installed edition must match the entitlement.
If you own a valid Windows 11 Pro license, use Settings > System > Activation and check the available upgrade or troubleshooting instructions. Microsoft may direct you to install the correct edition. You may need to purchase a Pro upgrade if the device only has a Home license.
Do not use a Pro for Workstations, Pro Education, Enterprise, or Education key as a substitute for an ordinary Windows 11 Pro license.
Activate an organization-managed PC with KMS
KMS applies only to authorized volume-licensing environments, such as a company or school. It requires a KMS host, network access to that host, and an organization-issued volume-activation entitlement.
The Windows 11 Pro KMS client setup key currently listed by Microsoft is:
W269N-WFGWX-YVC9B-4J6C9-T83GXThis is a KMS client setup key, also called a GVLK. It is not a retail product key. It will not activate a personal retail installation against Microsoft’s public activation servers.

On an authorized organization-managed PC, an administrator can run:
cscript.exe %windir%system32slmgr.vbs /ipk W269N-WFGWX-YVC9B-4J6C9-T83GX
cscript.exe %windir%system32slmgr.vbs /atoIf the organization publishes its KMS service in DNS, Windows normally discovers it through the _vlmcs._tcp service record. KMS uses TCP port 1688 by default.

If your organization gives you a specific KMS host, set it like this:
cscript.exe %windir%system32slmgr.vbs /skms kms.example.com:1688
cscript.exe %windir%system32slmgr.vbs /atoReplace kms.example.com with the host supplied by your IT department. Never use an internet-listed KMS server as a replacement for a valid license or an authorized organization.
To remove a manually configured KMS host and return to automatic discovery, run:
cscript.exe %windir%system32slmgr.vbs /ckmsKMS clients must periodically renew activation. A company laptop that stays away from the organization’s network for too long can eventually display licensing warnings.

Commands that do not permanently activate Windows
slmgr /rearm does not permanently activate Windows. Where permitted, it resets or extends an activation grace-period state; it is not a substitute for a product key, digital license, MAK key, or authorized KMS service.

Likewise, a KMS client key copied from a public website is not a free retail license. It needs an authorized KMS host and appropriate volume licensing.
Windows 11 Pro for Workstations and Windows 11 Pro Education must be activated online according to Microsoft’s activation guidance. Phone activation and SLUI 04 are not available for those editions.

Can I activate Windows 11 Pro with CMD without a product key?
Only if the PC already has a valid Windows 11 Pro digital license or belongs to an authorized volume-activation environment. Command Prompt cannot create a license or bypass activation.

After installing a legitimate key with cscript.exe %windir%system32slmgr.vbs /ipk YOUR-KEY-HERE, run cscript.exe %windir%system32slmgr.vbs /ato in an elevated Command Prompt.
How do I know whether Windows 11 is permanently activated?
Run cscript.exe %windir%system32slmgr.vbs /xpr. You can also open Settings > System > Activation.
Will a Windows 11 Pro key activate Windows 11 Home?
No. Home and Pro are different editions. You need a valid Pro entitlement and must install or upgrade to the matching Pro edition.
Is the Windows 11 Pro KMS key a free activation key?
No. The KMS key is a client setup key for authorized volume licensing. It requires an organization’s KMS host and does not activate a retail PC through Microsoft’s public servers.
The Bottom Line
