Most USB drives open in Windows 11 through File Explorer, but they are not always shown immediately under Quick access. To find one, open This PC and look under Devices and drives. If it is missing there, use Disk Management to determine whether Windows detects the disk, has mounted its volume, and has assigned a drive letter.

Open a USB drive in File Explorer

  1. Connect the USB flash drive or external USB disk to your Windows 11 PC.
  2. Open File Explorer by selecting its taskbar or Start menu icon, or press Windows + E.
  3. Select This PC in the left navigation pane.
  4. Under Devices and drives, double-click the USB drive. It may be labelled USB Drive (E:), Removable Disk (F:), or with the name given to the drive.

The drive letter in parentheses is assigned by Windows and may be different each time you connect the drive to a different computer. If File Explorer opens to Home or Quick access, select This PC; removable drives are normally listed there rather than in Quick access.

Open the USB drive using its drive letter

If you know Windows assigned the drive the letter E:, you can open it directly:

  1. Press Windows + E.
  2. Select the File Explorer address bar.
  3. Type E: and press Enter.

Replace E with the letter shown for your USB drive in This PC or Disk Management. This method is useful when the drive is not pinned in the navigation pane but is otherwise working normally.

USB drive does not appear in File Explorer

First check whether Windows can see the physical disk. Disk Management displays disks and volumes even when File Explorer cannot mount them.

Open Disk Management

Use any of these methods:

  • Right-click Start and select Disk Management.
  • Open Search, type Disk Management, and select Create and format hard disk partitions.
  • Press Windows + R, type diskmgmt.msc, and select OK.
  • Open Computer Management, then go to Storage > Disk Management.

Identify the USB disk by its capacity and label. Do not rely only on its disk number, since Disk 1 or Disk 2 can refer to a different device on another PC.

Disk Management sees the USB disk but it has no drive letter

A missing drive letter is a common reason a USB volume is absent from File Explorer. Assign a letter as follows:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In Disk Management, locate the USB volume by checking its size and label.
  2. Right-click the coloured volume area, not just the disk label such as Disk 2.
  3. Select Change Drive Letter and Paths.
  4. Select Add.
  5. Choose Assign the following drive letter.
  6. Select an unused letter and choose OK.

The volume should then appear in File Explorer. Windows requires administrator-level permission to change drive-letter assignments.

Assign a letter with DiskPart

DiskPart can do the same job from an elevated Command Prompt or PowerShell window. Use it only after identifying the correct volume by its size and file system:

diskpart
list volume
select volume <number>
assign letter=E
exit

Replace <number> with the USB volume number and E with an unused letter. DiskPart applies the letter to the volume currently in focus, not generally to the physical disk. Selecting the wrong volume can affect another drive, so check the size and file system before running select volume.

The USB disk is Offline

  1. In Disk Management, right-click the disk label, such as Disk 2.
  2. Select Online.
  3. If the volume now has a drive letter, open it from File Explorer.

Do not select Initialize or format the disk simply because it is offline. Those actions can make existing data harder to recover.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The USB disk is Unallocated or Not Initialized

Unallocated means Windows sees disk space that is not currently part of a usable volume. Not Initialized can mean the disk is new, or that its disk information or partition structure is damaged.

If the USB drive is genuinely new or empty, you can prepare it by right-clicking the unallocated space, selecting New Simple Volume, and completing the wizard. The wizard assigns a drive letter and can format the volume.

If the drive contains files you need, stop. Do not select Initialize, New Simple Volume, Format, or Delete Volume. Formatting creates a new file system and can destroy access to the existing files. Consider professional or specialist data-recovery assistance instead.

The volume is shown as RAW

A RAW volume is not recognized by Windows as a usable file system. It may be corrupted, formatted with a file system Windows does not have a driver for, or prepared for another operating system. Windows includes built-in support for NTFS, exFAT, UDF, and FAT32, but not every file system used by other platforms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not format a RAW volume if its files matter. Formatting may make recovery more difficult. If the files are backed up or the drive is empty, formatting it with a suitable file system may make it usable again.

Windows does not detect the USB drive at all

If the disk is not listed in Disk Management, work through these checks:

  1. Unplug the drive, wait a few seconds, and reconnect it.
  2. Try another USB port directly on the computer instead of connecting through a hub.
  3. If it is an external hard drive, connect its separate power adapter and switch it on.
  4. Replace the USB cable if the device uses a detachable cable.
  5. Open Disk Management and select Action > Rescan Disks.
  6. Test the drive on another computer.

Insufficient power, a faulty hub, a defective cable, a damaged USB port, and a failed drive or enclosure can all produce the same symptom. If the drive fails to appear on another computer as well, the hardware is more likely to be at fault than Windows 11.

Check Device Manager for USB errors

Device Manager can reveal a driver or device-enumeration problem even when Disk Management does not show a usable volume.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Check Disk drives, Universal Serial Bus controllers, and Other devices.
  3. Look for a device with a yellow exclamation mark.
  4. Right-click it, select Properties, and read the message and error number under Device status.

For a device or driver association problem, you can reinstall the device entry:

  1. Right-click the problem device and select Uninstall device.
  2. Disconnect the USB drive.
  3. In Device Manager, select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
  4. Reconnect the USB drive.

Uninstalling a device in Device Manager does not format the USB drive. It removes the device association or driver installation from Windows. Windows can reinstall the device when it is connected again or after a restart.

Fix the “USB device not recognized” message

This message generally means that the USB device reported a problem or Windows encountered a driver problem. USB-C connections can also fail because of an incompatible port, cable, dock, or insufficient power.

Unlock a BitLocker-encrypted USB drive

A BitLocker-protected USB drive may appear in File Explorer but remain inaccessible until you unlock it. Removable encrypted drives are listed under Removable data drives – BitLocker To Go.

  • Open Start, type BitLocker, and select Manage BitLocker.
  • Find the removable drive and select the option to unlock it.
  • Enter the BitLocker password or the 48-digit recovery key.

The full BitLocker Drive Encryption control panel is available in Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, and Education. It is not included in Windows 11 Home. Windows 11 version 24H2 can show a hint identifying which Microsoft account is associated with a recovery key when the recovery screen appears. Without the password or recovery key, Windows cannot unlock the encrypted data.

Safely remove the USB drive

Close files and programs using the drive before disconnecting it. Then:

  1. In the taskbar notification area, select Show hidden icons if necessary.
  2. Right-click Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media.
  3. Select Eject <device>.
  4. Wait for the Safe To Remove Hardware notification.
  5. Disconnect the USB drive.

If the icon is missing, right-click the taskbar, select Taskbar settings, expand Other system tray icons, and turn on Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media. The icon may also be absent when no removable device is connected or Windows does not recognize the device.

FAQ

Where is the USB drive in Windows 11?

Press Windows + E, select This PC, and check Devices and drives. It may appear as USB Drive, Removable Disk, or another label followed by a drive letter such as E:.

Why is my USB drive not showing in File Explorer?

Windows may detect the physical disk but fail to mount its volume, assign a drive letter, recognize its file system, or unlock BitLocker. Check Disk Management to identify which condition applies.

How do I open a USB drive from Command Prompt?

If Windows assigned it the letter E:, type E: and press Enter. Replace E with the actual drive letter. This only works when Windows has mounted the volume.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I format a USB drive that Windows says must be formatted?

Not if the drive contains files you need. Formatting creates a new file system and can make existing data inaccessible. Try another port, cable, or computer and consider data recovery first.

How do I assign a drive letter to a USB drive?

Open Disk Management, right-click the USB volume, select Change Drive Letter and Paths, choose Add, select an unused letter, and select OK.

Why does my USB drive work on another computer but not Windows 11?

The Windows 11 PC may have a faulty port, hub, cable, driver association, or power problem. Try a direct USB port, then inspect Device Manager and reinstall the problem device entry if necessary.

The Bottom Line

For a normal connection, use Windows + E > This PC > Devices and drives. If the USB drive is missing, inspect it in Disk Management before formatting or initializing anything. Assign a missing drive letter, bring an offline disk online, and treat RAW, unallocated, or not-initialized states as potential data-loss situations when the files are important.
