You can reach files on a Synology or QNAP NAS remotely without making its management or file-sharing services directly accessible from the public internet. Keep the NAS behind your router, avoid unnecessary port forwarding, and choose a remote-access method—usually a VPN or the manufacturer’s relay service—that fits your setup. If you also plan to host Plex on the NAS, check Plex support for the exact model and whether it can handle your media and playback needs.

Why remote access does not require putting a NAS on the public internet

Remote access means creating a controlled path from an off-site device to your files or services. It does not require connecting the NAS directly to the internet or exposing its administration page, file-sharing ports, or other services to anyone who can reach your public address.

QNAP’s official Product Security guidance says, “You should never directly connect the network port of the NAS to the Internet.” It advises placing the NAS behind a router and disabling UPnP, DMZ, and port forwarding. Synology likewise recommends opening only the public ports needed for required services. These are vendor security recommendations, not a guarantee that any particular setup is invulnerable.

Set a safer baseline before enabling remote access

Start with the NAS behind your router, then limit both the ways into the network and what each account can do after connecting. A VPN or vendor relay does not replace account security, software updates, backups, or least-privilege permissions.

  • Update the NAS software. QNAP recommends enabling automatic updates.
  • Review accounts and permissions. Synology recommends deactivating the default admin account and managing user and shared-folder permissions. Grant remote users access only to what they need.
  • Use available security checks. Synology recommends enabling Security Advisor.
  • Choose a remote-access route deliberately. Enable only the VPN or relay features you intend to use, and review their access controls.

Compare remote-access methods

The main choices differ in how they establish a path to your network, how much setup they require, and which devices or applications they support. The best fit depends on your router, NAS, number of locations, and whether you need access to a whole private network or only selected NAS services.

Method What it does Trade-offs and fit
Router VPN Lets a remote device join the private network through the router. Can be relatively simple if the router supports a suitable VPN. Router features and hardware affect setup and performance. QNAP identifies this as one remote-access option.
NAS-hosted VPN Terminates the VPN connection on the NAS. Requires more configuration. QNAP notes integration with QuFirewall and login-failure notifications and auto-blocking. It can suit users who regularly need access to many files.
QNAP myQNAPcloud Link Provides remote access through QNAP’s Link service without exposing the NAS or forwarding ports. Usually easier to set up than a VPN, but QNAP warns that access may slow at peak use. QNAP’s FAQ recommends VPN for improved speed and connection security. Configure Link access control rather than treating the relay as unrestricted access.
Synology QuickConnect Detects the network situation and selects a route; it may use Synology’s relay when a direct connection is unavailable. Avoids manual port-forwarding setup. A relayed route can be slower, some regions or ISPs may restrict relay, and third-party applications are unsupported. Synology says to enable SSL for end-to-end encryption.
Site-to-site VPN or SD-WAN Connects multiple networks or locations. Relevant to businesses with more than one site or remote backup needs. QNAP notes that this approach can require additional equipment and setup.
Port forwarding Maps a port on the public router to a service on the NAS. Creates direct exposure to the forwarded service. QNAP advises against exposing the NAS; Synology advises opening only ports required by services. Do not use port forwarding simply because it appears to be the easiest way to reach the NAS.

When a VPN is the better fit

A VPN is worth considering when you want a remote device to connect to your private network, or when you need regular access to multiple files and services. Choose between a router-hosted and NAS-hosted VPN based on the features your equipment supports and where you prefer to manage the connection. Neither option removes the need to secure VPN credentials and limit NAS permissions.

When to consider the vendor relay

QuickConnect and myQNAPcloud Link can simplify access without requiring manual port-forwarding setup. Their routes and app support differ, so confirm that your intended apps work with the service. Relay performance may vary; if speed is important, a VPN may be a better fit, depending on your equipment and connection.

When a multi-site connection makes sense

For a small business connecting offices or arranging remote backup between locations, site-to-site VPN or SD-WAN may be more appropriate than configuring individual devices one at a time. Account for the extra equipment and setup QNAP notes for these approaches.

Configure QNAP myQNAPcloud Link without port forwarding

QNAP’s remote-access FAQ describes this route for users who want Link access without port forwarding. The labels below are the documented settings; their location may vary with the NAS software version.

  1. Disable Auto Router Configuration and UPnP port forwarding so the router does not automatically open ports for the NAS.
  2. Enable myQNAPcloud Link.
  3. Set Link access control. QNAP describes private access as limited to the owner’s account and customized access as limited to specified accounts.
  4. Test access from outside the local network and confirm that the intended account can reach only the content it is permitted to use.

Use Synology QuickConnect with the route and encryption in mind

QuickConnect detects the connection route and can use Synology’s relay when a direct connection is unavailable. That means remote performance may depend on whether traffic is direct or relayed. Synology says SSL must be enabled for end-to-end encryption. Some regions or ISPs may restrict relay, and QuickConnect does not support third-party applications. If a router or ISP change disrupts external access, Synology notes that external-access settings may need updating.

Check Plex security settings separately from NAS access

Plex Media Server’s secure-connections setting has a practical trade-off. The default Preferred mode uses secure connections when available, but can allow a regular HTTP connection if a secure one is unavailable. Required mode requires secure connections, but may prevent some apps from connecting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose based on the devices and apps you actually use. Required mode is not automatically the right choice if a client cannot connect under it; Preferred mode does not mean every connection will always be secure. Treat Plex’s connection setting as separate from the decision to expose a NAS service through your router.

Decide whether the NAS will store Plex media or run Plex Media Server

A NAS can serve as storage for a Plex library without hosting Plex Media Server itself. If Plex runs on another computer, the NAS choice is primarily about storage capacity and the ecosystem you prefer. If Plex runs on the NAS, model compatibility and processing capability become central.

Check the exact NAS model

Plex supports NAS products from Synology and QNAP, but support is not universal across either manufacturer’s range. Before buying, check Plex’s current NAS compatibility list for the exact model and compare it with the manufacturer’s current specifications. A broad search such as “2-bay NAS enclosure” can help you find options, but the number of bays alone does not establish Plex compatibility or performance.

Work out whether your playback needs transcoding

Transcoding converts media so a playback device or connection can handle it. It may be needed when a client cannot directly play a file’s format, resolution, bitrate, or codec; subtitles can also require video processing. A remote or shared user may request a lower-quality stream, which can also trigger transcoding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plex identifies CPU capability as a major NAS limitation. Many low-power ARM-based NAS models cannot transcode video, so playback may depend on the client being able to play the media directly and having enough bandwidth for the full bitrate. Do not assume that a model that can store a video can also transcode it for every client.

Match the workload, not just the brand

Before choosing a NAS as the server, list the media formats and quality levels in your library, the devices that will play them, whether subtitles are important, the available remote bandwidth, and the number of people likely to stream at once. Check the exact model against Plex’s compatibility information and manufacturer specifications for that workload. If those needs are not established, a specific Synology or QNAP model recommendation would be premature.

For storage, check that the drives’ compatibility and capacity suit the chosen NAS and your workload. Storage capacity does not answer the separate question of whether the NAS can run Plex Server or transcode the media you intend to play.

Remote-access decision checklist

  • Is the NAS behind a router, with UPnP, DMZ, and unnecessary port forwarding disabled?
  • Do you need access to the wider private network, or just the NAS through a vendor service?
  • Does your router or NAS support the VPN method you plan to use?
  • For QuickConnect or myQNAPcloud Link, do the intended apps work with the service, and are access controls configured?
  • Have you considered that relay routing may be slower or unavailable in some regions or on some ISPs?
  • Are accounts, shared-folder permissions, updates, and backups managed independently of the chosen access method?
  • If Plex will run on the NAS, have you checked the exact model, playback clients, media, bandwidth, subtitles, and expected concurrent viewers?
