First identify the correct partition, then mount it at a directory and open its files. Do not guess the device name: choosing the wrong partition can expose the wrong data.
Mount a FAT32 partition from the terminal
Linux uses the vfat filesystem type for FAT-family filesystems. The Linux kernel’s VFAT documentation shows the same basic mount -t vfat form. In the commands below, /dev/sdX1 is only an example; replace it with the partition you identify on your own computer.

Connect the drive and inspect available block devices and filesystem types:
lsblk -fFind the partition that corresponds to the removable drive and check its filesystem label or type. Device names differ across machines and connections; do not assume the partition is always

Create a mount point, which is the directory where the drive’s contents will appear:
sudo mkdir -p /mnt/fat32 -
Mount the identified partition:
sudo mount -t vfat /dev/sdX1 /mnt/fat32 -
List the files:
ls /mnt/fat32You can also open that directory in a file manager.

When you are finished, unmount the volume before unplugging it:
sudo umount /mnt/fat32Unmounting lets pending filesystem operations finish. The util-linux mount manual documents mounting and read-only operation.

Inspect without writing
If you only need to inspect files and want to avoid writes through this mount, use the read-only option:
sudo mount -t vfat -o ro /dev/sdX1 /mnt/fat32
Replace the example partition path as above. A read-only mount is for viewing; it will not let you save changes to the drive.
Fix unexpected ownership or write access
FAT does not store Unix user and group ownership on disk. The VFAT driver presents ownership and permissions using mount options such as uid=, gid=, umask=, dmask= and fmask=, as described in the kernel VFAT documentation. If files appear owned by an unexpected user or you cannot write as your account, check how the volume was mounted.
For a user-specific mount, one possible command is:

sudo mount -t vfat -o uid=$(id -u),gid=$(id -g),umask=022 /dev/sdX1 /mnt/fat32
The uid and gid options set the owner and group Linux presents for the mounted files. The mask controls which permission bits Linux presents: umask applies generally, while dmask and fmask can set directory and file masks separately. Choose values for the users who need access and your system’s security policy; do not use a broad-access mask such as umask=000 by default.
Troubleshoot mounting and filenames

Mount reports that the device cannot be found: Run
lsblk -fagain and verify the partition path. Do not substitute a guessed device name. -
The mount point is missing: Create it with

The drive mounts but appears read-only: Check whether you mounted it with
-o ro, and review the ownership and mask options. Those settings affect the Linux view of access permissions; they do not add Unix ownership data to the FAT volume. -
Filenames display incorrectly: The kernel documentation distinguishes short-name codepage conversion from long-filename display. It documents
codepage=,iocharset=andutf8; long filenames are stored on disk in Unicode. Change encoding options only when you have a display problem. The manual saysiocharset=utf8is not recommended and suggests considering theutf8option instead. -
Timestamps look shifted: The VFAT manual documents
tz=UTCfor interpreting timestamps as UTC andtime_offset=for a local offset. These are specialized options, not prerequisites for ordinary file access; daylight-saving changes can still produce an hour’s difference in some cases.
Check a filesystem that appears inconsistent
If the volume appears damaged or inconsistent, unmount it before checking or repairing it:

sudo umount /mnt/fat32
The dosfstools fsck.vfat manual documents fsck.fat (also commonly invoked as fsck.vfat). Start with a non-writing check when practical:
sudo fsck.fat -n /dev/sdX1
Use the same verified partition path, not the example literally. The manual describes -n as a check that makes no changes, -r as interactive repair and -a as automatic repair. Repair options can alter filesystem contents; back up accessible data first when possible, and do not assume repair will recover every file.
The manual also describes salvage behavior that can place recovered unused cluster chains into files named fsckNNNN.rec, with -f as a salvage option. Treat those files as uncertain recovery results, not guaranteed intact originals. Salvaged data can pose a security concern if exposed through a mount point accessible to unprivileged users.
Do not format a drive to open it
Mounting makes an existing filesystem accessible. mkfs.fat creates a FAT filesystem on a device or image; it is not a command for opening files. The Debian dosfstools mkfs.vfat manual describes that creation function. Running a formatting command on a drive that contains wanted files risks destroying access to its existing contents.
