A custom desk build reported by TechSpot uses an overhead camera to locate a phone, then moves a wireless charging coil beneath it. The concept aims to remove the need to place a phone precisely on a fixed charging pad—but the moving coil serves one spot at a time, not several phones in different places simultaneously. It is a maker project, not a commercially available desk or an independently tested consumer product.
How the moving charging system works
TechSpot’s September 25, 2026 report describes a simple core loop: a camera above the desk detects a phone’s position, and motorized hardware below the desktop moves a single wireless charging coil to that location. The phone can therefore be set down in different places without lining it up over one fixed pad.
The project was inspired by Apple’s canceled AirPower concept, which aimed to charge devices placed across a charging surface. Rather than install a dense array of fixed coils, the creator reportedly estimated that covering the desk that way could require about 600 coils. TechSpot does not name the creator or explain how that estimate was calculated, so it should be understood as the creator’s reported estimate—not a measured engineering requirement.

What the desk reportedly does
Charges one moving target at a time
The motorized coil moves beneath a detected device, but it cannot charge multiple devices at separate positions simultaneously. Two additional fixed coils in the desk’s corners provide other charging spots. The report does not specify the wireless charging standard, power rating, or compatible phone models.
Displays information and an animated cat
A transparent display reportedly activates when a phone is placed on the desk. It can show basic information, a task tracker, and an animated cat that follows the moving charging coil.

Charges a keyboard at its home position
When the moving coil returns to a designated home position, it can align with a receiver coil inside a keyboard and charge it. This is another use of the same moving-coil mechanism, rather than a separate charging zone that operates at the same time.

A Mac mini is built into the setup and can connect to a monitor; TechSpot does not identify its generation. The motorized legs can raise the desk to a saved standing height after a seated-time reminder, which the report says arrives after about an hour.

Adds cup and focus reminders
An electromagnet on the moving assembly can pull a compatible cup toward the user as a hydration reminder. The report does not identify the cup or explain what makes it compatible.
In Focus Mode, a 25-minute timer appears beneath the phone. TechSpot says that if the phone is picked up before the timer ends, the desk will not charge it again when it is put back down.

What the project does—and does not—establish
TechSpot reports that HTX Studio spent about two months building the project. That duration and the roughly 600-coil figure are reported project details, not independently verified measurements. The article describes functions of a custom build; it does not establish that the desk is available to buy, provide a repeatable parts list, or verify performance, charging safety, or long-term reliability.

The report does not identify the specific coil module or other components used, so it is not a build guide or a parts recommendation.
