Railway wildlife detection is a chain of sensing and response, not a thermal-camera feature by itself. In a documented train-mounted system, visible-camera AI identifies objects in the track area, LiDAR adds distance information, and a far-infrared camera supplies temperature data. A detection can support an alert or other action, but it does not by itself establish that a collision was prevented.
How do thermal cameras detect animals on railway tracks?
A thermal camera detects infrared energy associated with temperature. An animal may stand out from cooler or warmer surroundings even when ordinary visible-light imagery is poor, including in darkness. Thermal information is useful for detecting a heat contrast; by itself, it does not necessarily identify an animal’s species, determine its distance, or establish whether it is in the train’s path.
The Railway Technical Research Institute (RTRI) describes an onboard forward-obstacle system that combines three sensors with AI:
- Visible-light camera: AI extracts the railway track area from the image and detects objects entering that area.
- LiDAR: Measures distance to objects and supplies position information.
- Far-infrared camera: Detects temperature information that can help reveal an obstacle.
The system combines these inputs to assess a forward obstacle. Its sensors must be calibrated and aligned so their outputs correspond to the same scene. RTRI says calibrating sensors individually can be complex and time-consuming, and describes a collective calibration method based on railway-specific rail information. These details come from RTRI’s 2024 account, “Forward Obstacle Detection System for Trains in Preparation for Future Driverless Operation.”

What does each sensing approach contribute?
| Approach | What it contributes | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Thermal or far-infrared camera | Infrared/temperature information that can make an animal detectable when visible imagery is degraded. | Species, reliable distance, or safe movement out of the train’s path. |
| Visible camera with AI | Image-based object detection and, depending on the model and training, classification. | Reliable detection in every lighting or weather condition, or a distance measurement without additional sensing. |
| LiDAR | Distance and position information from laser returns; it can complement camera-based object detection. | Animal species identification on its own. |
| Train-triggered magnetic or vibration sensors | Detect an approaching train and relay a signal to warning devices placed along the track. | Detection of an animal by an onboard thermal camera; this is a separate warning architecture. |
RTRI also describes a camera-and-LiDAR method in which a deep-learning detector estimates an object’s category and presence probability from camera images. LiDAR point-cloud positions are projected into the image, and the combined information is used for the detection decision. In that system, sensor fusion means combining different kinds of evidence; it does not mean every sensor independently identifies the animal.
How far away can a train detect a deer?
In RTRI’s 2024 verification tests on actual straight railway tracks, its forward sensor-fusion system detected deer at a maximum reported distance of 376 metres. That is a test maximum, not a guaranteed operating range. The result should not be assumed to apply unchanged on curves, in different weather, with other species, at different train speeds, or on different track layouts.

Other figures from RTRI illustrate why a maximum distance and a detection rate are different measures:

| Forward sensor-fusion verification on actual straight railway tracks; deer | Maximum detection distance: 376 m | RTRI’s test maximum, not a universal range guarantee. |

The numbers are not a league table: they come from different tests and describe different targets or measures. In particular, a maximum distance does not tell you how consistently a target was detected at that distance. RTRI presented the straight-track work as verification that could inform specifications tailored to operators’ line conditions, and as foundational work for an automatic train operation system then under development—not as proof of universal deployment.

Do thermal cameras work at night or through vegetation?
Thermal sensing can help in darkness because it detects infrared energy rather than relying on visible light. A 2022 peer-reviewed study of ungulates and trains recommended thermal cameras to improve detection in darkness and when animals are visually obscured by vegetation. The recommendation addresses a detectability problem; it is not a specification that a camera can see through dense foliage, terrain, or every other obstruction.
Rail-side vegetation and uneven verge terrain can obstruct a driver’s view, as the same study found. A camera still needs an unobstructed enough view of its target to receive useful information. Darkness, partial concealment, track geometry, and the relation between the animal and the track all affect what a system can detect and how useful that detection is.

What happens after an animal is detected?
Detection is only the first part of a safety response. Depending on where the system is installed and how the railway operates, information might support a driver or operator alert, a speed-related response, a deterrent, or a longer-term decision about fencing and safe crossing locations. The examples below serve different purposes and should not be mistaken for interchangeable deployments.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Use and placement | What the source reports | Evidence boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Onboard forward obstacle sensing | RTRI’s visible-camera, LiDAR, and far-infrared system detects obstacles ahead for railway-specific evaluation. | Reported verification work; not evidence that the system is universally deployed or that detections prevented collisions. |
| Trackside camera and audio deterrence in Sweden | Alstom and Flox Intelligence reported field tests of AI cameras that identify animals and activate tailored audio deterrents. The first phase identified moose, roe deer, fox, and wild boar; a second phase beginning in April 2026 expanded to video detection plus sound deterrence. | The project report says farm animals and birds were particularly accurately identified in tests, while moose and roe deer needed more training to reach similar accuracy. These are project-reported results, not independent validation. |
| Thermal-drone survey in Normandy | SNCF describes hunters using thermal-camera drones to follow wild-boar movement and identify railway crossing locations. That information was passed to the infrastructure manager, which installed small removable grids to guide animals safely across. | This is mapping and infrastructure planning, not an onboard real-time warning system. |
| Train-triggered warning devices | A 2017 peer-reviewed study tested a design using magnetic or vibration sensors to detect an approaching train and wirelessly signal lights and bells farther along the track. The study reported approximately 20 seconds of warning before train arrival and a US$225 prototype material cost. | These are figures from a historical prototype study, not current pricing or evidence of field-proven collision reduction. |
SNCF also describes measures that do not depend on real-time thermal detection: environmental studies, wildlife passages, fence maintenance, targeted vegetation work, escape devices, and deterrents. Its account says a noise-and-light system developed by ElanRail was deployed in Normandy from October 2025 and was being tested on a Rouen–Caen section. That is SNCF’s account of work on the section concerned, not a controlled estimate of general effectiveness.

Can railway sensors stop wildlife collisions?
Sensors can contribute to collision prevention, but a detection event alone does not show that a collision was avoided. A useful system must detect the animal in time, communicate information to a response that the railway can carry out, and account for how the animal moves. An alert may not give a train enough time or distance to stop, and an audio deterrent may not direct an animal away from danger.
The animal-response findings in Bhardwaj and colleagues’ 2022 ungulate study show why response design matters. Average flight-initiation distance was 78 metres for roe deer and 79 metres for moose. Warning horns moved roe deer flight initiation an average of 44 metres farther away, but warned roe deer usually fled toward the tracks; the horns did not alter moose flight-initiation distance. These are observations of animal responses, not sensor detection ranges or evidence that horns reduce collisions. The authors recommend early detection and warnings that let animals escape the railway corridor safely.
Railway-level collision totals show the scale of the problem but do not measure the performance of a particular detector. Alstom’s 11 May 2026 account of Swedish field trials reports about 5,000 animal collisions annually in Sweden. SNCF Group reports that 2,562 animals were hit on its network in 2024, with 302,343 minutes of delay and €2.17 million in equipment and labour costs excluding TGVs; those figures appear in an article updated 6 May 2026. Neither set of network figures establishes that a specific sensing or deterrence system reduced collisions.
What limits a railway wildlife detection system?
- Line of sight: Vegetation, uneven terrain, and trackside geometry can conceal animals from drivers or sensors.
- Conditions and target: A result for a person, one animal species, or a straight-track test cannot automatically be generalized to other targets or operating conditions.
- Sensor integration: Multiple sensors need calibration and alignment; combining them adds engineering work.
- Classification quality: AI performance depends on training and observed conditions. The Swedish project account reports different accuracy progress among animal groups.
- Response and animal behavior: Detecting an animal does not guarantee that an alert, speed response, or deterrent will move it safely out of the corridor.
- Evidence type: A test maximum, a detection rate, a field-trial report, an animal-behavior observation, and a measured collision reduction are different forms of evidence.
For that reason, published examples should be compared by purpose and placement, sensing method, target and test conditions, response, and evidence type—not ranked by a single distance or accuracy figure. The available examples include obstacle detection from a train, trackside deterrence, and thermal mapping for crossing planning; they answer different operational questions.
