The water-powered “electric bandage” is a research prototype designed to stimulate a wound with a small electric field, without a plug-in power source or external electronics. In diabetic-mouse studies, it accelerated wound closure; that is promising preclinical evidence, not proof that it heals human wounds. NC State’s 2024 updates described further testing toward clinical trials, not a product available to buy.
How the water-powered bandage works
Water activates a thin battery
The 2024 Science Advances paper describes a water-powered, electronics-free dressing (WPED) built by integrating a flexible magnesium–silver/silver-chloride battery and two carbon-based stimulation electrodes with a commercial Tegaderm transparent-film bandage. A small amount of water activates the battery, which supplies the current for stimulation. The Tegaderm film is the dressing substrate; it is not the electric therapy itself.
Electrodes direct a field across the wound
The dressing is designed to conform around the wound so the electric field runs from its edge toward its center. NC State co-first author Rajaram Kaveti described this direction and the dressing’s ability to conform as important to the design. In principle, the field is intended to support the body’s wound-healing processes; the device does not close or cover a wound by electrical power alone.
What the prototype weighs and how long it runs
The paper reports a battery area of 0.64 cm², a battery mass of 47 mg, and a capacity of 0.4 mAh. The complete prototype—including its battery, electrodes, and Tegaderm substrate—weighs about 290 mg. The authors say it can provide several hours of stimulation; they suggest that battery sizes tailored to a dressing could support operation over several days. Those figures describe the research prototype and proposed design options, not a retail product specification.

- THE RIGHT BALANCE: Powered by a patented and proprietary electrochemical process called Natural Zone Technology 5.5, Vashe Wound Solution OTC is titrated to a skin-friendly pH of 5.5 to mimic the body’s natural antimicrobial defenses and provide an ideal wound healing environment.
- EFFECTIVE WOUND CLEANSING: Vashe Wound Solution OTC preserved with Hypochlorous acid has been tested in-vitro against many common pathogens, including fungi, spores, and multi-drug-resistant bacterial strains. In clinical studies, the organisms are mechanically removed from the wounds in great numbers, allowing the immune system to sustain the reductions.
- UPGRADE YOUR WOUND CARE KIT: Vashe Wound Solution OTC is for the management of minor skin abrasions, minor lacerations, minor irritations, minor cuts, and intact skin. Great addition to medical supplies for home care & use with wound dressing.
- ABOUT URGO MEDICAL NORTH AMERICA: UMNA provides medical devices and products to hospitals, nursing homes and home health agencies – and the patients they treat – with a focus on acute, chronic, and surgical wounds, and additionally skin moisturizing. By listening to clinicians’ concerns, UMNA has been able to provide the highest-quality and most innovative products available, while keeping our costs competitive.
What the wound-healing results show
Promising results in diabetic mice
In diabetic-mouse wound models, the researchers reported faster wound closure with WPED treatment. They also observed increased epidermal thickness, changes in inflammation, and promoted angiogenesis—the formation of new blood vessels. The study authors reported closure rates comparable to those seen with approaches involving expensive biologics or complex electronics.
These are animal-model findings. They do not establish that the bandage is safe or effective for people, or that it will outperform other treatments in a human clinical trial. NC State’s 2024 updates described additional testing on the path toward clinical trials; they do not document completed human efficacy trials.

Why the results matter—and what they do not prove
The 2024 study authors estimated that chronic wounds affect about 2% of the U.S. population and cited more than $28 billion in annual U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services spending to treat them. These are figures reported by the study authors, not measurements of the bandage’s impact or savings. The mouse results make the approach worth investigating, but they cannot establish a clinical benefit or lower treatment costs for patients.

The main proposed distinction is the WPED’s water-activated battery and flexible, integrated dressing. The cited 2024 paper and NC State reports do not identify a specific competing electrotherapy device, so a product-by-product performance or cost comparison is not supported. The table separates what those sources establish about WPED from details they do not provide about other systems.

- Breathable & Comfortable: Transparent film dressing are highly breathable, allowing the skin to breathe freely and helping to promote natural wound healing. High ductility, can be used for flexible connectors. Pre-cut transparent design, easy to use, easy to observe the wound site or equipment conditions.
- Waterproof Bandages: Transparent film dressing has excellent waterproof performance, and the fixed effect is good, do not worry about falling off. Even in daily water activities like swimming, bathing and showering, these waterproof bandages effectively block dirt and liquids, preventing wound infection.
- Hypoallergenic: The transparent film dressing consists of a bonded clear polyurethane film and release paper, which is latex free and avoids skin irritation. Waterproof bandaids provides gentle and safe fixation, does not stick to the wound after removal, reduces pain, and is easy to change.
- Mutiple Use: The waterproof bandages post surgical provides protection for abrasions, cuts, scratches, minor burns, other small wounds, post-operative incisions, and can also be used for intravenous catheter fixation, non-stick dressing protection, baby navel care, post-tattoo care and many other scenarios. Easy to carry, can also be used as an outdoor first aid bandage, to avoid sweat or dust contamination of the wound. It's a must-have wound care bandage for first aid kits.
- Note: Water proof bandages can be used as a medical fixed and non-adhesive dressing, but do not directly apply to open wounds or wounds with excessive exudation, should be used with gauze or non-woven cloth, when removing the transparent film dressing to peel back the dressing rather than pull up from the skin, to avoid tearing the wound again. If you encounter any problems during use, please contact customer service in time.

Can you buy the water-powered electric bandage?
The available 2024 reports describe a research prototype, not a consumer product. They do not document FDA clearance, completed human efficacy trials, or a retail listing for WPED. Because those reports are from 2024, they cannot establish whether the development or availability status has changed since then. The approximately $1 estimate is the study authors’ prototype cost, not a verified sale price; NC State’s “a couple of dollars per dressing” figure was a projection conditional on further development and approval, not a current price.
Tegaderm transparent-film dressings are used as the prototype substrate, but buying a Tegaderm dressing does not provide WPED’s battery, electrodes, or electrical stimulation. The prototype should not be treated as a do-it-yourself treatment or as a replacement for care from a clinician.
