The U.S. Postal Service’s reported AI effort, the Edge Compute Infrastructure Program (ECIP), uses computer vision to analyze package images and help troubleshoot sorting and processing anomalies. The available reporting describes an operational system, but does not establish an AI error rate or show that ECIP improved delivery speed or outcomes.
What USPS’s AI system does
USPS began moving toward package-image analysis in 2019, according to EE Times’ May 18, 2021 report. The operational ECIP system reportedly went online in late August 2020. It applies image classification and object detection to images captured during processing, with reported uses including identifying damaged barcodes and investigating sorting or processing anomalies.
This is best understood as a visual-analysis and troubleshooting layer around package processing—not evidence that an AI system independently makes every sorting decision. A USPS spokesperson told EE Times: “The main usage of the system is for troubleshooting purposes of anomalies in package sorting and processing.”

EE Times described ECIP as an enterprise deployment using GPU-supported servers and deep-learning software. Accenture Federal Services and Hewlett Packard Enterprise were named as infrastructure contractors, while NVIDIA supplied its EGX platform and an inference server. The account described Hewlett Packard 6500 servers, each equipped with four NVIDIA V100 Tensor Core GPUs, for training algorithms.

The 2021 report put the system’s scale at about 20 terabytes of image data daily from more than 1,000 processing machines. Those figures are a historical snapshot attributed to that report, not current operating metrics. EE Times also reported that USPS processed 7.3 billion packages annually and had 195 mail-processing centers at the time; the same article cited 40 percent of the world’s mail and a rate of 231 packages per second. These are dated figures from 2021, not current USPS-wide measurements.
EE Times relayed NVIDIA’s claim that the server-and-GPU combination could perform equivalent scanning tasks in 20 minutes. That is a vendor performance claim reported by the publication, not an independent test result. NVIDIA executive Anthony Robbins also described a longer-term design goal of building a package database and extending the model across mail processing, which he characterized as 129 billion pieces of mail a year. That was a stated ambition, not proof that the broader model had been deployed.

What is known—and unknown—about accuracy
The public account does not provide a measured ECIP accuracy or error rate. The USPS spokesperson told EE Times that the system’s then-current use was not producing data that would constitute an error rate. That means readers should not treat the report as evidence that the system correctly identifies a stated percentage of packages, prevents a known number of mis-sorts, or improves delivery performance by a measurable amount.

How ECIP differs from later USPS sorting announcements
Later USPS statements describe broader package-sorting capacity and automation. They are useful context for network modernization, but they do not demonstrate that ECIP caused capacity increases.
| Source and date | What was reported | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| USPS congressional testimony, May 17, 2023 | USPS said it had purchased and deployed 249 package-sorting machines, including 137 in 2022, and raised daily package-handling capacity to 60 million. It also cited robotic induction and vision systems as automation enhancements. | An official statement about broader sorter deployment and capacity—not a measured outcome of ECIP. USPS testimony. |
| Postmaster General David Steiner’s remarks, November 14, 2025 | Steiner said daily package-processing capacity had risen from 60 million to 88 million through deployment of more than 600 package sorters, including 94 in 2025. He also said USPS needed to bring AI into its logistics network. | An official account of later sorter capacity and a broad AI objective; it does not attribute the capacity increase to ECIP. USPS remarks. |
A separate September 2025 USPS release said a Dallas multi-induct matrix sorter could process 70,000 packages an hour and 1.5 million each day, with claimed capacity and efficiency increases. The release describes a specific sorting machine and does not identify it as an AI system, so those figures should not be read as ECIP performance. USPS Dallas sorter announcement.
