The 3dfx Voodoo 5 6000 was never a retail product. Enthusiast Anthony ZXCLXIV (also known as ZXC-64) reconstructed it by studying a borrowed, damaged prototype without destroying it, then designing replacement circuit boards populated with genuine VSA-100 chips. The result is a family of reproductions, not a newly designed modern GPU. Their “modern” features are revised interfaces, power inputs, memory layouts and board engineering while retaining the original graphics architecture, BIOS, drivers and characteristic bugs.

Why the Voodoo 5 6000 had to be recreated

3dfx planned the Voodoo 5 6000 as the four-chip flagship of its VSA-100 generation, but the card never reached retail. Surviving examples discussed in historical coverage are prototypes. The company’s preliminary Voodoo 5 6000 AGP specification sheet described four VSA-100 processors, 128 MB of graphics memory, full-scene anti-aliasing, T-Buffer effects, texture-compression support and an external power supply. Its listed throughput of 1.33–1.47 Gigapixels per second and its feature list are preliminary company specifications, not independent benchmark results.

That distinction matters: Anthony’s boards reproduce the intended design and use authentic 3dfx silicon, but they are not original production cards and do not turn the unreleased product into a current commercial model.

How Anthony reconstructed the card

A damaged reference prototype

Anthony borrowed a nonfunctional, damaged Voodoo 5 6000 prototype and reverse-engineered its circuitry. Reports describe the process as non-destructive. He mapped the board’s connections and design, created new PCB layouts and assembled replacement boards rather than cutting up or sacrificing the original hardware. As he put it in a 2021 HotHardware report, “Very important [to note], no V56k was hurt or even killed during [reverse engineering].”

Original VSA-100 processors

The reproductions use genuine VSA-100 graphics processors, including new-old-stock chips reported as available when the first recreation was covered. The planned architecture used four processors, each historically reported as running at 166 MHz. Using the original chips allowed the boards to preserve the behavior of the Voodoo 5 6000 rather than emulate it with a later GPU.

Original software behavior

Anthony said the recreation kept the original BIOSes and drivers. His summary, quoted by HotHardware, was: “Performance is exactly the same as on V56K,” and “Same BIOSes, same drivers, same bugs.” Custom PC’s retrospective likewise describes the original BIOS and drivers being used without modification. These are the designer’s and contemporary reports’ claims; the available coverage does not provide a complete independent benchmark table.

The two major reproduction revisions

The 2021 PCI recreation and the later AGP Strange God board are separate configurations. Their specifications should not be merged into one supposed “modern Voodoo 5 6000.”

Custom PC reported the PCI board’s dimensions as 311 × 110 mm. The later Strange God board’s different bus, power connector and memory arrangement demonstrate what “modern revamp” means here: updated board implementation around an old graphics design, not a new rendering engine.

What changed from the original concept

Interface and power

The preliminary 3dfx card was an AGP accelerator expected to use an external adapter. The 2021 recreation instead used PCI and drew power through an internal four-pin Molex connector. Strange God returned to AGP with a reported 66 MHz AGP 1.0 interface but changed the power input again, using a six-pin PCIe connector. These choices make the boards practical for different enthusiast systems while departing from the planned retail arrangement.

Memory capacity and layout

The first reported reproduction matched the 128 MB figure through sixteen 8 MB SDRAM modules rated at 166 MHz. Strange God used sixteen 16 MiB SDR SDRAM chips for approximately 256 MB and included two VBIOS memory modes. That larger configuration belongs to the later reproduction; it is not evidence that the original 3dfx specification was 256 MB.

Pass-through and physical implementation

The PCI version was reported with VGA pass-through and a custom black PCB. Such changes affect how the reproduction connects to a host system and display chain, but they do not change the underlying four-VSA-100 rendering architecture.

Performance, compatibility and known limitations

Historical reporting describes four VSA-100 chips operating at 166 MHz and preserves the period software stack. Reports from Tom’s Hardware and Mod Labs coverage mention color distortion, rendering artifacts, translucent stripes and compatibility or speed problems on some combinations of hardware, operating systems and drivers. Those symptoms should be treated as configuration-dependent reports, not guaranteed faults on every board.

The preliminary sheet listed support for Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000, along with hardware full-scene anti-aliasing, T-Buffer effects, FXT1 and DirectX texture compression and AGP sideband support. Because the sheet was explicitly preliminary, its feature and throughput claims describe 3dfx’s planned product rather than a modern independent test result.

What the reported $1,500 price means

GamersNexus reported paying approximately $1,500 for a Strange God reproduction for its 2023 feature. That was a historical transaction for one particular board, not a current list price, a guarantee of remaining stock or proof that reproductions are presently sold. The available reporting also does not establish current VSA-100 chip inventory or a reliable marketplace listing.

What enthusiasts can conclude

  • The retail Voodoo 5 6000 never existed; the boards discussed today are reproductions of prototypes.
  • Anthony’s work combined non-destructive reverse engineering with newly made PCBs and genuine VSA-100 silicon.
  • The 2021 PCI board and later AGP Strange God board are distinct revisions with different power and memory designs.
  • The project prioritizes authentic BIOS, drivers and behavior, including period compatibility issues, rather than modernizing the GPU architecture.
  • Claims about present availability, stable pricing or independently measured performance are not established by the cited coverage.
