The Martian did not single-handedly make Project Hail Mary happen, but the 2015 film offers a persuasive precedent: both adapt Andy Weir novels into science-driven survival stories, and screenwriter Drew Goddard worked on both adaptations. That makes the older film a useful lens for understanding why the newer one feels like a natural successor—not proof of a direct cause-and-effect chain.

Why The Martian is the clearest predecessor

The Martian opened in theaters on October 2, 2015, according to 20th Century Studios. The ComicBook.com article behind the “owes everything” framing describes it as an adaptation of Andy Weir’s 2011 novel and Project Hail Mary as an adaptation of another Weir novel. The shared author is the strongest connection between the films: both start from Weir’s interest in people applying science under extreme pressure.

Their survival setups are distinct. The Martian follows Mark Watney, stranded on Mars and forced to solve practical problems largely on his own. Project Hail Mary sends its central character on an interstellar mission tied to a threat to Earth. One is a struggle to stay alive on a hostile planet; the other expands the stakes to a deep-space mission. Their common ground is not identical science or plot, but the use of problem-solving as dramatic action.

What the films share—and what they do not

The shared screenwriter is a concrete production link: the Associated Press reports that Goddard wrote both adaptations. It gives the comparison more substance than a resemblance in premise alone, but it still does not establish that The Martian caused the later film to be made.

#1 Best Overall

ComicBook.com’s author describes both films as humane and optimistic. That is a critical interpretation, not an objective ranking or evidence of universal agreement. The older film’s appeal as a companion watch rests more securely on its shared author, adaptation lineage, and science-forward survival premise.

Does The Martian’s success explain Project Hail Mary?

It is plausible to read The Martian as part of the path that made another ambitious Weir adaptation feel viable. The ComicBook.com article reports that The Martian earned $630.6 million at the box office, while Amazon’s July 3, 2026 update says Project Hail Mary had earned more than $680 million globally. Those are figures from different publishers, and they should not be treated as a controlled comparison or proof that the earlier film caused the later one.

The Associated Press provides a narrower, attributable account of investment in the newer film: director Phil Lord said of Amazon MGM’s investment, “They made a tremendous investment and it’s going to pay off,” in an interview alongside Miller. That comment concerns the investment in Project Hail Mary, not The Martian’s influence.

Where to watch or read the stories

20th Century Studios lists The Martian as available on Blu-ray, DVD, and digital. Amazon reported Project Hail Mary streaming on Prime Video worldwide in its July 3, 2026 update; streaming catalogs can change, so check the service’s current listing for your country.

For the clearest view of how the films relate, read Weir’s novels as well as watching the adaptations. Penguin Random House’s Andy Weir author page lists his catalog, and its Project Hail Mary movie-tie-in edition is one available edition of the newer novel.
