At Worlds 2026, the Swiss Stage uses five rounds, but a team does not necessarily play all five: it advances to Knockouts after three wins or is eliminated after three losses. Round 1 pairings follow four draw tiers and avoid same-region matchups; from Round 2 onward, teams are randomly paired with opponents holding the same record, without repeat opponents. Riot’s Worlds 2026 Primer is the source for the current-season rules below.
How many rounds does Worlds’ Swiss Stage have?
The 2026 Swiss Stage has five rounds. Sixteen teams enter, and eight advance to the Knockout Stage, according to Riot’s 2025 League Handbook. The stage’s five-round structure is also described in the 2026 primer.
The five rounds are a maximum, not a fixed number of matches for every team. A team leaves the stage as soon as it reaches three match wins or three match losses.
How are Round 1 opponents drawn?
For Worlds 2026, the 16 teams are assigned to four tiers. Tier 1 teams draw against Tier 4 teams, while Tier 2 teams draw against Tier 3 teams. Teams from the same region cannot meet in this opening round.

| Tier | Worlds 2026 teams |
|---|---|
| Tier 1 | GEN, AL, TLAW, G2 |
| Tier 2 | <CBLOL1>, TSW, HLE, BLG |
| Tier 3 | LYON, MKOI, T1, TES |
| Tier 4 | CFO, IG, DK, Play-Ins Winner |
These are the 2026 tiers, not a reusable list for other years. Riot’s current-season primer specifies them; earlier Worlds pools should not be substituted.
How are opponents chosen in Rounds 2–5?
After Round 1, the draw is record-based: teams are randomly paired with other teams that have the same match record. For example, teams at 1–0 are drawn against other 1–0 teams, while teams at 0–1 are drawn against other 0–1 teams. Riot’s 2026 Primer says this applies in Rounds 2 through 5.

A team cannot be paired with an opponent it has already faced. Same-region matchups are allowed from Round 2 onward, so the Round 1 regional restriction does not continue through the rest of the Swiss Stage.

The broad format—five rounds, record-based pairings, and thresholds of three wins to advance or three losses to be eliminated—appears in Riot’s 2023 and 2024 primers as well as its 2025 League Handbook. But implementation details can change by season, so prior rules should not be assumed to apply in 2026.
