The reported FBI recovery came from notification records stored by iOS, not from breaking Signal’s encryption or retrieving a conversation from Signal’s servers. According to 404 Media’s April 9, 2026 report, incoming Signal message previews remained in Apple’s internal notification storage after Signal had been removed from the iPhone. The account does not establish that deleted Signal messages are generally recoverable, or that the same method recovered outgoing messages.
Where the recovered messages came from
404 Media reported that testimony and an exhibit summary described messages recovered from a phone belonging to Sharp. The exhibit summary, as quoted in the report, says: “Messages were recovered from Sharp’s phone through Apple’s internal notification storage—Signal had been removed, but incoming notifications were preserved in internal memory.”

That points to a copy created outside Signal itself. When a message preview appears as an iPhone notification, iOS may handle or log notification content separately from the data stored inside the messaging app. Removing Signal can remove its app-level data without necessarily clearing every record that iOS created while handling notifications.
The report describes incoming messages, not outgoing ones. It does not publish the complete extraction process, establish the phone’s full notification settings history, or show that every iPhone retains notification content in the same way. This is evidence about a particular device and case, not a general recovery guarantee.

Does deleting Signal erase messages from an iPhone?
Deleting the app and erasing every possible trace of a message are not the same thing. App removal addresses Signal’s own local app data; the reported evidence came instead from Apple’s notification storage. So removing Signal does not, by itself, prove that notification-derived copies are gone.
That distinction also matters for disappearing messages. The case does not show that every disappearing message remains available after its timer expires, nor does it establish what would happen on another phone with different settings, software, or notification history. It shows that a notification preview can leave a separate local artifact in at least the reported circumstances.

What Apple’s iOS 26.4.2 update confirms
Apple’s security advisory for iOS 26.4.2, released April 22, 2026, states: “Notifications marked for deletion could be unexpectedly retained on the device.” Apple attributed the fix to improved data redaction for a Notification Services logging issue and identified it as CVE-2026-28950.
This advisory independently confirms that unexpected retention of notification data was a real iOS issue addressed in that update. It does not establish that the advisory describes every detail of the FBI case, identify which iOS version was on the phone, or quantify how often notification records can be recovered.

Can Signal provide deleted messages to investigators?
Signal’s government-requests page says the service does not have access to “messages, calls, profile information, group information, contacts, stories, call logs, and many other kinds of content and metadata.” Signal says it cannot share data it never had.
That is different from investigators examining a device. In the reported case, the described source was local iPhone notification storage—not a deleted conversation supplied by Signal’s servers. A service’s lack of access to message content does not mean a copy could not exist on a user’s device.

What iPhone users can do about notification previews
Apple’s iPhone guide says notification previews for an app can be set to Always, When Unlocked, or Never, and that previews can include text. If you do not want message text appearing in notifications, choose Never for previews; When Unlocked limits when preview text is shown but is not the same as disabling previews altogether.
- Always: previews may be visible on the Lock Screen whether or not the iPhone is unlocked.
- When Unlocked: preview text is shown when the iPhone is unlocked.
- Never: notification previews do not display their text.
These choices reduce the amount of message content exposed through notifications going forward. They do not establish that older notification records have been erased, and the public account does not specify the complete settings history on the phone in the case.

What this case does—and does not—show
- It shows: according to the reported exhibit summary, investigators recovered incoming Signal message content from Apple’s internal notification storage after Signal had been removed.
- It does not show: that investigators decrypted Signal’s current message database, recovered outgoing messages, or can routinely restore all deleted or disappearing Signal messages.
- It does not establish: a recovery rate, a universal iPhone behavior, or that consumer recovery apps can reproduce the reported forensic result.
Deleted files can sometimes persist in device storage until overwritten, as general forensic background described in a DOJ search-warrant affidavit explains. That broad possibility is not proof that a particular deleted Signal message can be recovered. Here, the more specific reported explanation is a notification-derived copy stored outside the Signal app.
