The Drinkable Book is a research-developed water-treatment concept: its instructional pages include tear-out paper filters treated with silver or copper nanoparticles. Tests reported reductions in coliform bacteria and E. coli, but they do not show that the paper makes every water source safe to drink or removes viruses and chemical contaminants.
What the Drinkable Book is
The project combines water-safety instructions, printed in English and a local language, with paper pages designed to be torn out and used as filters. The pages were treated with silver or copper nanoparticles. The concept grew from earlier experiments with bactericidal paper and was developed for emergency, small-scale water treatment rather than routine household purification. The American Chemical Society’s 2015 project release describes the book and its tests; the McGill research-group background describes its intended use.
How the paper filter is intended to work
Water passes through a treated sheet held in a filter holder. The paper physically filters as water passes through it, while silver or copper has a biocidal role: in the proposed silver mechanism, bacteria take up silver ions and die. Developer Theresa Dankovich described it this way in 2015: “Bacteria percolate through it, absorb silver ions and, as a result, end up dying.” Scientific American’s 2015 report, also published by Chemistry World, attributed that explanation to Dankovich.

What the reported tests found
The ACS project release reported that collected field-water samples contained between 200 and 3,500,000 coliform colony-forming units (CFU) per 100 mL. In more highly contaminated sources, silver paper produced a reduction of slightly more than 6 log and copper paper a 5 log reduction. Both papers were reported to completely inactivate coliforms in less contaminated samples. These are results reported for the study’s samples and conditions, not a performance guarantee for arbitrary water.
A separate field observation reported in 2015 from Limpopo, South Africa, described E. coli falling from approximately 200,000 to fewer than 10 CFU per 100 mL after treatment. That is a result from one reported sample, not proof that the same reduction will occur in other water. The 2015 Scientific American / Chemistry World report covers the observation. The McGill group also cites earlier laboratory work in which silver nanoparticle paper produced a log 5 reduction of live E. coli; that laboratory result is distinct from the field observation.

Silver and copper results reported in 2015
| Paper tested | Reported result in more highly contaminated sources | Reported result in less contaminated sources | Metal loss reported by ACS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silver nanoparticle paper | Slightly more than 6-log coliform reduction | Complete coliform inactivation | Under 0.1 ppm silver in most purification experiments |
| Copper nanoparticle paper | 5-log coliform reduction | Complete coliform inactivation | Under 1 ppm copper in most purification experiments |
The table reflects the ACS project release from 2015. The release compared its metal-loss measurements with EPA and WHO limits cited at that time; those study measurements alone do not establish long-term exposure safety or performance across different water chemistries.

Not necessarily. The reported evidence centers on coliform bacteria and E. coli. The cited material does not demonstrate that the Drinkable Book removes viruses, dissolved heavy metals, pesticides, industrial chemicals, or every other possible contaminant. A reduction in bacteria is not the same as proof that water is safe in every circumstance.

- Drink Anywhere, Certified by Science - This survival-grade straw filter meets strict NSF/ANSI 42, 372, 401 standards (Test Report: NBF21-004693-01). It instantly removes 99.9999% of total coliforms (including E. coli and other representative organisms). It’s designed for extreme reliability during hiking, camping, international travel, or emergency preparedness—proven by science, trusted by adventurers.
- Triple NSF Certified for Complete Reliability & Superior Taste - Breathe easy with every sip. Our straw is independently certified to NSF/42 (for chlorine & taste improvement), NSF/372 (lead-free materials), and NSF/401 (reducing microplastics and particulate). This triple verification guarantees you get the best-tasting water while keeping metals, microplastics and particulate at bay.
- Portable & Long Life-Span - This straw filtration at only 7.1'' long and 1" in diameter fits any 28mm threaded bottle, cup, or glass. It weighs just 2 ounces and fits in the palm of your hand, pocket, gym bag, backpack, survival pack or purse. Both ends of the Upgrade water filter straw are removable for extend Longer Lifespan ensuring it provides up to 1,320 gallons (5,000 liters) of drinking water. Don't miss this opportunity to drink water conveniently wherever you go.
- 5-Stage Filtration - Our Upgrade 5-Stage Filtration System includes a coarse filter screen, double layer pp cotton fiber, coconut shell activated carbon and hollow fiber ultrafiltration membranes. Flexible use of threaded water inlet cap to easy backflush. (IT DOES NOT LOWER TDS VALUE, ensuring water's essential mineral balance remains untouched.)
- 0.1 Micron Pore Size & Balanced Flow Rate - This water filter straw features a 0.1 micron pore size, designed to help improve filtration precision. It delivers a flow rate of up to 16.9 fl oz/min (500 ml/min) for a balance between filtration performance and drinking speed, making it suitable for outdoor, travel, and emergency use.
Stuart Kahn, a University of New South Wales researcher not involved in the project, raised a practical concern in the 2015 report: users may not be able to tell when enough bacteria has been removed for water to be safe. That was a concern about judging treatment, not a reported user-behavior test. The sources cited here do not establish product-specific approval or certification by a regulator or standards body. WHO guidance addresses multiple water-treatment methods generally; it does not validate this particular paper product against all contaminant types. WHO’s Guidelines for Drinking-water Quality provide that broader context.
Capacity, storage, and intended use
Engineering for Change lists about 100 liters per page and up to four years per book as design specifications. Its retrieved summary does not establish those figures as independently verified consumer-life performance, so they should not be treated as guaranteed capacity or shelf life. The group’s framing is emergency and small-scale assistance, not a routine purification system. Engineering for Change’s Safe Water Book summary also identifies safe storage as a complementary system.

Filtering is only one part of keeping water safe: treated water can be recontaminated if it is stored or handled unsafely. A covered safe-water storage container can help protect treated water from recontamination, but storage does not purify water and is not a component of the Drinkable Book.
