This project lets a phone submit a value on a login page hosted by an ESP-01 ESP8266 module; an Arduino Uno checks that value and briefly drives a lock-style solenoid when it matches. It is a local-network learning prototype, not a security-tested smart lock: the tutorial uses HTTP and hard-coded example credentials and does not establish secure credential handling or production-grade access control.

How the WiFi login-page door lock works

ElectroPeak’s tutorial, written by Saeed Olfat, splits the work between two boards. The ESP-01 joins a WiFi network, hosts a small web page, and handles a submitted value. The Arduino Uno receives that value over serial, compares it with a value hard-coded in its sketch, and briefly activates an output when the strings match.

  1. Join the local WiFi network. Configure the ESP8266 with the network credentials so it can connect to the same router as the phone or computer.
  2. Open the login page. The ESP8266 reports its local IP address and serves an HTTP page on port 80. A browser on the shared network visits that address.
  3. Submit the value. The page sends the entered value to a /save handler using an HTTP GET request. The ESP8266 sends a nonempty value to the Arduino over serial.
  4. Check and actuate. The Arduino reads until a newline, compares the resulting string with its hard-coded expected value, and pulses output 9 if they match. The project identifies a lock-style solenoid as the actuator.

The tutorial suggests putting a QR code near the door to make the local address easier to open. The QR code is only a shortcut to that address: it does not provide remote access or bypass the requirement that the phone can reach the ESP8266 on the local network.

Parts named in the tutorial

Part or tool Role in the project
Arduino Uno R3 Receives the submitted value over serial, compares it with the example value, and controls the output.
ESP8266 WiFi module, ESP-01 Connects to WiFi and hosts the login page; the upload instructions use “Generic ESP8266 Module” in the Arduino IDE.
TIP120 power Darlington transistor Named as a component in the solenoid-lock project.
Lock-style solenoid The named physical lock actuator.
Arduino IDE Used for the board code and ESP-01 upload setup.
USB-to-TTL converter Used to program the ESP-01.

The tutorial does not give the solenoid’s voltage, current, dimensions, duty cycle, power-supply requirements, or mechanical fit. Those details are necessary to determine whether a particular solenoid, driver, supply, and door hardware are compatible. Check the chosen components’ specifications before buying or building; the parts names alone do not establish a safe working combination.

#1 Best Overall
Hosyond 3Pcs ESP8266 ESP-12E CP2102 NodeMCU Lua Wireless Module Development Board for Arduino IDE/Micropython
  • Not only it is easy to program for this controller by using the CP2102-USB interface, but also unnecessary to press the flash and reset buttons before each flash operation.
  • NodeMcu is an open source Lua based firmware for the ESP8266, ultra low cost wireless modules, development boards for rapid prototyping, integrated with ESP8266 chips.
  • The ESP8266 has powerful on-board processing and storage capabilities, and can be integrated with sensors and other application-specific devices through its GPIOs.
  • It is compatible with Arduino IDE,works great with the latest Mongoose IoT/Micropython.
  • Modern Internet development tools can use the built-in API to instantly put your idea on the fast track.

What the tutorial does—and does not—establish about security

This is useful as an Arduino and ESP8266 learning exercise, but the implementation shown should not be treated as a secure access-control system. The page communicates over HTTP on the local network, and the example network credentials and expected value are configured in source code. The cited tutorial does not document HTTPS, credential hashing, rate limiting or lockout, access logging, secure enrollment, or a security review. That is a description of what the tutorial documents, not a claim that the system has undergone penetration testing.

There is also a wording inconsistency in the tutorial: a code introduction mentions a servo, while the materials and project description identify a solenoid lock. For the physical build described by the parts list, the specified actuator is a solenoid.

Network and door considerations before building

  • Local access: The phone must be able to reach the ESP8266’s local IP on the shared WiFi network. The tutorial does not describe cloud access or unlocking over the public internet.
  • Electrical compatibility: Confirm the lock’s electrical requirements and that the driver and power supply are suitable; the tutorial does not provide the specifications needed to make that selection.
  • Mechanical compatibility: A lock actuator must fit the door and locking mechanism. The tutorial does not specify dimensions or a mechanical installation design.
  • Outage and egress behavior: Decide how the door should behave if WiFi or power is unavailable, and preserve appropriate manual egress and recovery. The tutorial does not establish these behaviors.
