New Zealand’s All Whites were Oceania’s highest-ranked men’s senior national team in the latest complete regional comparison published by the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC): its 15 June 2026 table placed New Zealand 85th in the world, well ahead of second-ranked New Caledonia at 151st. New Zealand also won the 2026 OFC World Cup qualifying final, securing the region’s direct place at the tournament. Rankings are a dated snapshot; qualifying results describe one competition, so they answer different questions.
Oceania’s men’s teams in OFC’s June 2026 ranking comparison
OFC’s 15 June 2026 report lists 11 member-association teams and their positions in the FIFA men’s ranking. The positions below reproduce that dated OFC comparison; they should not be read as exact standings for 4 October 2026.

The reported 66-place gap between New Zealand and New Caledonia makes the All Whites the clear leader in this particular snapshot. FIFA’s New Zealand page identifies 20 July 2026 as its latest official ranking update and lists 86th as the team’s historical highlight. The page also notes that its displayed live ranking remains unofficial until matches are approved as international A matches. That later New Zealand figure does not update the rest of OFC’s June table; FIFA’s next update is listed for 7 October 2026, so an exact all-team October comparison is not established here. The ranking table captures a global comparison at one point in time. The 2026 OFC qualifying campaign offers a separate, direct measure of how the leading teams performed against regional opponents. With the World Cup expanded to 48 teams, OFC received a direct qualification place for the first time in the 2026 edition. OFC’s format had three stages: a first round for the four lowest-ranked teams, a second round with eight teams split into two groups, and a final stage of semifinals and a final. Group stage
New Zealand won all three of its Group B matches, scoring 19 goals and conceding one. Tahiti finished second in the group and advanced. In Group A, New Caledonia topped the standings with seven points, while Fiji advanced in second with five. Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea finished third and fourth in that group.
Semifinals and final
New Zealand beat Fiji 7–0 in the semifinal, and New Caledonia beat Tahiti 3–0. New Zealand then defeated New Caledonia 3–0 in the final to qualify directly for the World Cup. New Caledonia, as runner-up, went to the intercontinental playoff and lost to Jamaica. Fiji and Tahiti reached the semifinals, while New Caledonia’s path to the final showed it was the strongest challenger in the decisive stage.

These results support a clear conclusion about that qualifying campaign: New Zealand was dominant, won the title and took the direct place. They do not establish that one tournament alone determines long-term team quality.

How much do recent friendlies change the picture?
OFC’s 15 June report also recorded contrasting warm-up results. New Zealand lost 4–0 to Haiti and 1–0 to England in June 2026. Vanuatu beat Fiji 2–1 in the first of two home friendlies, then the teams drew 2–2. These matches add context about form on particular dates, but they do not change what the June ranking table measured or the outcome of the qualifying campaign.

Which team is the best in Oceania?
If “best” means highest in OFC’s complete June 2026 FIFA-ranking comparison, the answer is New Zealand. If it means the winner of the region’s 2026 World Cup qualifying competition, the answer is also New Zealand. New Caledonia was the runner-up and second in the June ranking list; Fiji and Tahiti were the other semifinalists. The answer should be qualified by date and measure rather than treated as a timeless ranking of every team.
