The Academy Software Foundation (ASWF) gives studios, vendors, and individual developers a neutral place to coordinate open-source software for motion pictures and related media. It does not make films or own every tool used in production; its role is to support shared projects through governance, legal frameworks, and community infrastructure.
What the Academy Software Foundation does
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences founded ASWF in August 2018 after a two-year investigation into open-source use across the motion-picture industry. The Foundation’s stated mission is to increase the quality and quantity of open-source contributions, coordinate work across projects, provide common build and test infrastructure, and make participation clearer. ASWF’s account of its origins and mission describes these functions as ways to lower barriers to developing and using open-source software.
That work addresses a coordination problem: organizations can have overlapping technical needs but develop tools in isolation. A shared project can give contributors a common governance structure and a place to collaborate, while common infrastructure can support building and testing. This is ASWF’s rationale for coordination, not a measured claim that the Foundation has reduced costs across the industry.

Why open-source coordination matters in film and VFX
ASWF’s About page summarizes an Academy investigation that found almost 84% of the motion-picture industry used open-source software, especially in animation and visual effects. The page does not state the underlying survey year or provide its methodology, so the figure should be read as a historical finding reported by ASWF—not as a current measurement of all entertainment companies.

Plus, it can be used for children's birthday parties, various events, award shows, festivals, parties, fundraisers on-site props or decorations
The same account identifies challenges that can arise when widely used software is developed in silos: organizations must manage multiple versions of libraries, and projects can have different governance and licensing approaches. Coordinating an open project can help multiple parties work on a shared codebase rather than separately maintaining solutions to a common problem.
ASWF’s 2022 Open Source in Entertainment report, produced with Linux Foundation Research, presents shared software components and open standards as sources of value for the industry. Executive Director David Morin characterized that value proposition this way: “This is a story about a community of people that generates a tremendous amount of value around open source projects, by developing some of the software components that power all productions, and the open standards that we need for our industry to grow.” That is an executive’s description of the Foundation’s purpose, rather than an independently measured impact statistic.

How a shared project can create value
ASWF project-hosting guidance describes a vendor-neutral home as a way to bring contributors from different organizations together. It also points to common industry awareness, downstream ecosystems, and project-health measurement as potential benefits. The value is not simply that code is open: it comes from coordinating maintenance and decision-making so that a project can serve more than one organization.
The Tool Desk

Those criteria help distinguish an industry-wide collaboration opportunity from a tool whose needs are specific to one company.

Who can participate—and how
Individual participation and corporate membership are distinct routes. ASWF’s Technical Advisory Council says anyone may participate in projects, subject to each project’s own governance. The Foundation does not describe corporate membership as a prerequisite for individual project participation. Start with the relevant project’s contribution and governance guidance, then identify a concrete task such as code, testing, documentation, or maintenance that fits its needs.
Organizations can contribute engineering time and other project resources, and can support the Foundation through corporate membership. ASWF’s Join page lists membership categories and fees, but these terms can change. It says corporate ASWF membership requires corporate membership in the Linux Foundation. The page lists an Associate category at $0 for pre-approved nonprofits, open-source projects, and government entities; check the current eligibility rules and fee schedule directly before budgeting.
Rank #4
For an organization considering a hosted project, the practical questions are whether the problem is shared across the industry, whether more than one organization will contribute, and what support the project needs beyond an initial code release. A proposal that can attract several constituencies is more aligned with ASWF’s project-hosting criteria than one dependent on a single sponsor.
What ASWF’s membership snapshot shows
In an announcement dated August 27, 2025, ASWF said it had over 30 member companies, announced ACES as a new project, and welcomed Skydance and LAIKA as new members. The announcement also named companies including Adobe, AMD, Autodesk, DreamWorks, Epic Games, Intel, Microsoft, Netflix, NVIDIA, Samsung, Sony Pictures Imageworks, Walt Disney Studios, Weta FX, and Warner Bros. This is a dated example of participation, not a verified membership count or project roster for 2026.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Create a mix using audio, music and voice tracks and recordings.
- Customize your tracks with amazing effects and helpful editing tools.
- Use tools like the Beat Maker and Midi Creator.
- Work efficiently by using Bookmarks and tools like Effect Chain, which allow you to apply multiple effects at a time

What the Foundation does not establish
- ASWF supports open-source collaboration; it is not itself a film studio or a producer of motion pictures.
- Hosting does not mean ASWF owns every tool used in entertainment, or that every useful open-source project belongs to the Foundation.
- The reported industry-use figure and the Foundation’s value claims do not establish a quantified industry-wide cost saving or return on investment.
- Membership count, fees, eligibility, and project rosters can change; consult ASWF’s current pages for live details.
