In December 2010, GFI Software reported a scheme in which scammers used a program to create fake HTML receipts for imaginary Amazon purchases, then sent receipt screenshots to marketplace sellers while claiming an order was missing. The intended pressure point was a seller’s desire to resolve a customer complaint quickly. A screenshot or printout was not proof that an order existed: sellers needed to verify the claim against authoritative order records.
How the fake Amazon receipt scheme worked
GFI’s December 2010 report described a receipt generator that let a user enter details such as an item name, price and order date, then produce an HTML receipt resembling an Amazon purchase record. The output could be made for several Amazon country domains. The report describes a tool for fabricating receipts; it does not establish that the program was malware.
The fraud depended on pairing a plausible-looking purchase record with a false missing-order complaint. A scammer could capture the generated receipt as a screenshot and send it to a marketplace merchant, hoping the seller would issue a refund or replacement without independently confirming the order. GFI said it alerted Amazon. Christopher Boyd’s contemporaneous GFI technical report, republished by Help Net Security on December 7, 2010, describes the generator and the reported clues.
What clues did GFI report?
GFI’s report noted two details it considered suspicious in the generated receipt:

- An orange order number selected from looping numbers.
- Random digits appearing in the payment section.
These are clues reported about the 2010 generator, not authoritative tests for identifying a current Amazon receipt. Receipt appearance can be imitated, and a suspicious visual detail alone does not establish whether an order is real. The decisive check is whether the transaction appears in the seller’s own authoritative order records.
How should a seller handle a suspicious missing-order claim?
- Check the order in your seller account. Search the relevant order records for the buyer, item and claimed order details. Do not issue a refund or replacement solely because a customer supplied a screenshot or printout.
- Confirm the transaction through Amazon. If the claim is not supported by the records available to you, use the applicable Amazon seller support or account workflow to verify the case before taking action.
- For a current U.S. seller-fulfilled return, use the official return workflow. Amazon’s Seller Central guidance on SAFE-T reimbursements directs sellers to Manage Seller Fulfilled Returns to review return status and take actions. It also describes SAFE-T reimbursement claims for certain eligible cases where Amazon issued a refund on a seller’s behalf.
- Follow the case-specific requirements. SAFE-T eligibility and documentation requirements depend on seller status and the details of the case. Consult the current guidance in your own Seller Central account; the cited page is U.S.-scope and does not establish procedures for every marketplace, fulfillment method or refund situation.
What is—and is not—known about the scam today?
The incident sources document a scheme reported by GFI in December 2010. They do not establish whether that specific program, or a similar campaign, remains active today. The historical report is useful for understanding how fabricated receipts can support refund fraud, but its visual clues should not be treated as current Amazon receipt-validation rules.

Dark Reading reproduced GFI’s announcement on December 9, 2010, including a statement from GFI senior threat researcher Christopher Boyd that the program let scammers create HTML receipts for phantom purchases and send screenshots to sellers claiming items were missing. The announcement is historical context, not evidence of a present-day campaign.
