Tesla uses data from its vehicles and energy products for diagnostics, service, safety analysis, fleet operations and product development. Its public materials describe several kinds of data and different ways they are handled—not one publicly documented, all-purpose database. Tesla also says camera-based AI is processed on the vehicle by default, while sharing certain recordings for fleet learning requires customer consent.

What data does Tesla collect?

Tesla’s Customer Privacy Notice, updated in February 2026, groups information into four categories: vehicle data, diagnostic data, infotainment system data and AI data. Examples include speed, odometer readings, vehicle-component signals, connectivity, charging history, battery use, electrical-system functions, software versions and camera images. Diagnostic data can include configuration, firmware, energy use and electronic-system state. Infotainment examples include feature or app usage counts and playback metadata. For energy products, Tesla lists performance, usage, operation, battery efficiency and condition.

These categories describe the kinds of information Tesla says its products generate. The public materials do not lay out a complete internal data architecture or a single total for all data gathered across vehicles and energy products.

How does Tesla handle vehicle and camera data?

On-vehicle camera processing

Tesla says camera-based AI for functions such as recognizing lane lines, street signs and traffic-light positions is processed directly on the vehicle by default. It says sharing certain camera recordings for fleet learning requires consent through the vehicle’s Data Sharing controls. Tesla describes opted-in recordings as anonymous and not linked to a customer or vehicle, except that recordings from safety events may be associated with a VIN. Tesla’s Customer Privacy Notice describes these practices.

Local Dashcam and Sentry Mode footage

Tesla’s support page says Dashcam and Sentry Mode recordings are not shared with Tesla. That is distinct from optional sharing of camera recordings and from safety-event data that may be associated with a VIN. The distinction matters: Tesla’s descriptions do not support the claim that it continuously watches or receives all driving-camera footage.

Data transmitted to Tesla

Tesla says operational and diagnostic data may be transmitted over the air to help Engineering assess vehicle health remotely and diagnose concerns. Its data-access page distinguishes data processed on the vehicle, data shared with Tesla but not associated with an account, and data associated with an account in defined circumstances. Camera recordings and location data may be shared if a customer opts in; the page also describes account or VIN association in a safety-critical event. These are Tesla’s descriptions of its practices, not a complete account of every signal or circumstance. See Tesla’s data-access and privacy support information.

What does Tesla use the data for?

Diagnostics, maintenance and product improvement

Tesla says diagnostic logs help troubleshoot or debug issues and make continuous improvements. Operational and diagnostic data can help the company assess vehicle health remotely and diagnose concerns, potentially resolving some issues proactively. Its privacy notice also lists maintenance, service, safety and product improvement among its stated purposes.

Collision and safety analysis

Tesla says it collects collision telemetry “to understand the nature of real-world collisions and develop solutions to prevent or mitigate them.” The statement appears in Tesla’s Vehicle Safety Report. Tesla describes mileage telemetry that is anonymized and collision-event telemetry that can be associated with a VIN. Its report explains that event capture can be affected by connectivity and damage to vehicle communications.

Tesla’s safety statistics need to be read with their definitions and limits. The report uses a rolling 12-month aggregation and updates collision-rate metrics quarterly. For collisions counted while FSD (Supervised) was in use, Tesla includes an event if the feature was active at any point in the five seconds before the collision, to account for recognition and takeover time. Tesla says it does not assign fault in the report. Its U.S. baseline is an estimate based on federal mileage and collision datasets, with stated limitations involving sampling and fleet distribution. These are company-published figures and methods, not independent validation.

AI and driver-assistance development

In its January 29, 2025 Q4 and FY 2024 update, Tesla said its Cortex training cluster at Gigafactory Texas helped enable FSD (Supervised) V13. The company attributed improvements in that release in part to increased data, higher-resolution video inputs, lower photon-to-control latency and a redesigned controller. The update is a dated company disclosure, not a full technical description of the training system. Tesla also states that FSD (Supervised) requires active driver supervision and does not make the vehicle autonomous. Tesla Investor Relations

Fleet operations

Tesla’s Fleet API is a customer-facing tool for fleet managers and authorized third-party applications. Tesla says it provides access to vehicle data and allows certain commands. Its examples of real-time data include GPS location, charge status, tire pressure and energy consumption; listed remote functions include locking, charging, software updates and viewing Supercharging data. This operational fleet use is separate from Tesla’s internal analytics and AI development. Details are on Tesla’s Fleet page.

What do Tesla’s published data figures show?

Two dated figures illustrate the scope of Tesla’s public disclosures, but they measure different things and should not be conflated.

Best Value
Figure What Tesla says it represents Scope and date
2.5 billion telemetry packages Packages received from Tesla’s global vehicle fleet Q3 2025; excludes China, according to Tesla’s Vehicle Safety Report
Approximately 50,000 H100 GPUs Size of the Cortex training cluster at Gigafactory Texas Described by Tesla in its Q4 2024 update; company-reported infrastructure figure

The telemetry count is not a total for every type of data Tesla collects, and the GPU count is not a measure of data volume. Tesla’s update also discussed increased data and higher-resolution video inputs for V13 without giving a single absolute total for those inputs in the cited passage. What can Tesla owners control or request?

Review data-sharing preferences

Tesla says customers can adjust certain data-sharing preferences in the vehicle touchscreen. Review the current in-vehicle Data Sharing controls for the vehicle and features in use; the available settings may depend on the product or feature. Turning off optional sharing does not mean that no product data is processed: Tesla also describes data use for services, safety, maintenance and contractual purposes.

Request account-associated data

Tesla’s support page says customers may request a copy of data associated with their Tesla account. Tesla gives a response time of up to 30 days, or the shorter applicable local response time. The company cautions that a standard request may not include information that is not linked to the account, is encrypted, is not customer-related, is not stored by Tesla or falls outside the request process. The request is therefore not necessarily a copy of every signal generated by a vehicle.

Keep locally stored recordings distinct

Tesla says Dashcam recordings are stored locally and are not transmitted to Tesla. Its Model 3 owner’s manual says a properly configured USB drive is required for Dashcam recording; consult the manual for the specific vehicle before choosing or configuring storage. A local recording device is not a Tesla fleet-learning or training component. Model 3 Owner’s Manual
