Ultrahand works because The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom treats player-built contraptions as part of the same physical world as its designed objects. Nintendo’s team began with experiments using mechanisms from the previous game, then worked to make objects respond consistently when players attached, pushed, blocked, and combined them.

How did Nintendo get the vehicle-building idea?

The idea grew out of experiments with parts already available in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. In a May 9, 2023, translated developer interview, director Hidemaro Fujibayashi recalled trying cog wheels as tires on a board, a paddle steamer, and a cannon mounted on a car. Seeing those experiments prompted him to propose an ability that would let Link attach objects and create new kinds of gameplay. Fujibayashi said, “This was how we came up with the idea of creating vehicles with the Ultrahand ability in this title.” Nintendo’s interview

The concept quickly became a systems problem. Players could create far more combinations than a designer could anticipate individually, so designers and programmers had to adjust how objects behaved together. As technical director Takuhiro Dohta put it in the same interview, “The object-to-object combinations are something our designers and programmers put a lot of effort into adjusting because of the sheer number of variations.”

Why did Ultrahand require a more consistent physics system?

The team’s challenge was not simply to make a vehicle move. It was to let the player freely manipulate objects while keeping their interactions coherent with the rest of the world. At the 2024 Game Developers Conference, Dohta, lead physics programmer Takahiro Takayama, and lead sound engineer Junya Osada discussed the game’s physics-based gameplay and sound design. The technical explanation here follows 4Gamer’s March 22, 2024 report on the session; the public GDC Vault listing confirms its title and speakers but does not provide a full transcript.

According to 4Gamer’s account, the world uses dynamic rigid bodies and constraints to represent properties such as mass and inertia. Those rules matter when parts are joined: motion can pass through a motor or constraint, while objects can collide and respond to one another. The goal was not perfect real-world simulation, but a shared set of rules robust enough for improvised constructions.

Kinematic motion can be predictable but physically incompatible

A kinematic object is moved according to a prescribed motion, often derived from animation, rather than being moved by physical forces. That can make it easier to implement and control. But in a physical interaction it can behave as if it has infinite mass: a moving gear may push through another object instead of stopping or being obstructed. When players could attach and manipulate parts with Ultrahand, exceptions like this could make combinations fail in unexpected ways.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Standard - Nintendo Switch [Digital Code]
  • Ultrahand: Using the new Ultrahand ability, Link can pick up, move, and rotate almost any object, and can even attach objects together to create bridges, vehicles, and more!
  • Fuse: Magically fuse almost any object to Link’s current weapon, shield, or arrow to increase durability, damage, or even add a new effect. Experiment with lots of different combinations to come up with surprising—and sometimes hilarious—results!
  • Ascend: Add a new dimension to your exploration with Ascend, which gives Link the ability to pass through solid objects above him. Rise up through ceilings, hillsides, and even certain enemies to create seemingly impossible shortcuts.
  • Recall: Use Recall to make objects in motion move backward through time, letting Link ride fallen boulders skyward, recover thrown weapons, or send projectiles back where they came from.

Physical control lets objects respond to their surroundings

The reported response was to move more of the world toward physical control, using motors and constraints to transmit movement between parts. An object that meets an obstacle can then respond to the collision instead of simply following a predetermined path. That consistency supports more of the actions players try without requiring a custom behavior for every contraption.

What does the shutter example reveal?

4Gamer’s account uses a descending shutter to show why physical interaction matters. A player can place an object such as ice beneath it. If the shutter moves without responding to physical collisions, it can pass through the wedge; with physical interaction, it meets the obstruction.

The same rules can also create solutions that were not designed as a dedicated route through a puzzle. The report describes a player moving ice with Ultrahand to operate a switch and hold the shutter open. The example illustrates how a shared system can multiply the possibilities available to players: designers provide objects, mechanisms, and rules, while players combine them in unexpected ways.

How do homemade vehicles work without a bespoke “drive” script?

In the account of the GDC session, the game did not need a special “drive car” program for each vehicle a player might build. A construction’s behavior could emerge from its components: wheels provide movement, a steering stick affects direction, and boards connect or support parts. Likewise, a field door could open when wheels wind a chain, rather than relying on a custom door-control script. A paddle boat could combine wheels and boards with buoyancy and water resistance.

This is systemic behavior, not a guarantee that every possible construction behaves like a perfectly accurate real-world machine. Its strength is that components can interact under shared rules, allowing many combinations without a separate scripted outcome for each one.

How do Ultrahand’s visuals and sounds make connections readable?

Physics alone would not tell players clearly what they had attached or how their construction was behaving. Nintendo’s interview describes the glue-like material visible between joined objects as an intentional visual cue. Art director Satoru Takizawa said it was an obvious way to show attachment; sound designer Hajime Wakai explained that the glue-like appearance also translated naturally into sound. Wakai said, “That expression of glue-like substances was also perfect from a sound design perspective because it was easy to translate into sound in real life.”

That audiovisual feedback makes a connection perceptible as well as functional. The game also required tuning the many possible object combinations, a task Nintendo’s developers specifically identified as demanding because of the number of variations.

What did Nintendo gain—and what did it have to tune?

Approach Strength Trade-off in Ultrahand’s context
Kinematic movement Can be easier to implement and offers predictable control. May ignore collisions or behave as if infinitely massive, which can conflict with objects players freely manipulate.
Physical control with shared rules Lets objects respond to mass, constraints, and collisions, supporting more consistent player manipulation. Many parts and combinations need adjustment so their behavior remains usable and understandable.
Bespoke scripting Can encode a particular expected result, such as one prescribed door action. Does not by itself provide the same range of alternate outcomes from player-built combinations.
Systemic components Parts such as wheels, boards, chains, motors, and steering mechanisms can combine to produce behavior and unexpected solutions. Players need clear visual and sound feedback to understand connections and what their creations are doing.

The development story is therefore not just about adding a powerful building ability. Ultrahand pushed the team to make the world’s rules work across both designed objects and player-made machines—and to tune those interactions so experimentation could feel legible rather than arbitrary.
