A studio merger can change who controls a film library and makes future licensing decisions, but it does not automatically move every movie to the buyer’s streaming service. A film’s availability still depends on its existing contracts, country, release window and the date you check. For Paramount Skydance’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, the transaction was still pending as of October 4, 2026; announced plans are not proof that licensing or release practices have changed.
What changes when studios merge—and what does not
A merger changes corporate control. If completed, the new owner may decide how to license a library in the future, whether to bundle services, how much to invest in streaming, and when films move between theaters, paid video-on-demand (VOD), home video and subscription streaming.

That does not mean existing agreements vanish on the day a deal is announced or completed. A film already licensed to another service may remain there for the term and territory set by its contract. Titles from the same studio can therefore appear on different services, or be available to rent or buy in one country while included with a subscription in another.

Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery: the deal is still prospective
Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery announced an anticipated closing date on September 30, 2026. However, WBD’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 describes a merger agreement subject to completion. As of October 4, 2026, the proposed combined ownership should therefore be treated as pending, not as an implemented change in control.
#1 Best Overall
In its February 27, 2026 acquisition announcement, Paramount described the proposed combined library as containing more than 15,000 titles. That is the company’s estimate of the library’s size—not a count of films available on one streaming service. Paramount also said the two studios would continue licensing films and shows on their own and third-party platforms, and remain buyers of outside content. Those are announced plans, not guarantees about any particular title’s future license.
WBD’s June 2025 announcement of a planned separation of Streaming & Studios from Global Networks is another example of a proposed corporate structure, not proof of a lasting final arrangement. The announcement said HBO Max was then in 77 markets; that was a dated company figure, not a current measure of service availability.

What Paramount announced about theatrical and streaming windows
For the proposed combined company, Paramount said each film would receive a full theatrical release, followed by a minimum 45-day global theatrical window before paid VOD. It said it intended to use windows of 60–90 days or longer for its most successful releases. The company also described a home-video window before subscription streaming and said geographic windowing commitments, including those in France, would continue to apply.

These are company-announced intentions for a proposed company, not a legal rule or a schedule that can be assumed for every film. A release’s actual path can vary by title and market. WBD’s filing describes distribution through both internal and third-party television and streaming services, as well as physical and digital home entertainment, illustrating why a film’s route is not limited to one subscription app.

How to find where a specific movie is available
- Search the exact title. Check the film’s page in the relevant streaming service or a current availability listing. Do not infer availability from the studio’s name, a merger announcement or a platform’s brand.
- Set the country. Catalogs and licenses vary by territory. A result for one country does not establish access in another.
- Identify the type of access. Confirm whether the movie is included with a subscription, available only to rent or buy, or offered on physical media. Those are different ways to watch, even if the same title appears in each search.
- Check the date and any end date shown. Catalog information can change as licenses begin or expire. Record when you checked; if an end date is listed, use it rather than assuming availability is permanent.
- For a new release, check its current window. A theatrical release does not by itself tell you when paid VOD or subscription streaming will begin. Use the title’s current listing rather than applying an announced general strategy as a fixed timetable.
The available corporate and regulatory statements do not confirm where any named film can be watched today. A reliable answer needs the film title, the viewer’s country and a current availability check.

The U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division said in 2026 that it had completed its review and concluded, based on evidence received, that the proposed transaction was not likely to harm competition in subscription video-on-demand, linear television, or studio development, production or theatrical distribution. The Department described an eight-month investigation in which it received more than two million documents from over 80 custodians.

That is the DOJ’s assessment of competition in the markets it named; it is not a finding about whether a particular film will remain on a particular service, nor a measurement of the choices available to an individual viewer.
