Neither category is universally stronger in the anime. Legendary and Mythical are classification labels, not a shared power scale. To compare Pokémon fairly, look at what named individuals actually do in specific episodes or films, and account for their opponents and circumstances.
What the anime establishes about their relative strength
Official anime summaries provide memorable examples, but they do not rank all Legendary Pokémon against all Mythical Pokémon. Pokémon Support makes a similar point about the broader question of the “strongest Pokémon”: strength depends on the challenge. Its discussion of training is specifically about video games, so it does not supply an anime ranking. Pokémon Support’s strongest-Pokémon guidance is useful context, not a verdict on anime battles.
There is no published statistic in the official materials cited here that measures an anime strength difference between the two categories. Game stats, competitive rules, and game capture mechanics should not be treated as evidence of how a Pokémon would perform in an animated story.

What specific anime stories show
Arceus intervenes in a conflict between Dialga and Palkia
In the Season 24 episode “Showdown at the Gates of Warp!”, Dialga and Palkia are locked in battle. The official episode summary says Arceus momentarily appears to quell the conflict and restore space-time. That is a consequential intervention in this story, but the summary does not establish an absolute ranking between Arceus and every Legendary or Mythical Pokémon.

In the Season 12 episode “The Needs of the Three!”, Hunter J captures Azelf. Mesprit and Uxie then appear, and their Future Sight attack brings down Hunter J’s ship. The official episode summary presents formidable Pokémon and a dramatic outcome, while also showing Azelf captured under the circumstances of that plot. It is not a controlled comparison with a Mythical Pokémon.
Films put both labels in view without ranking them
The official page for Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You! identifies Ho-Oh as Legendary and Marshadow as Mythical. The page establishes their classifications and film context; it does not quantify their relative strength.

Likewise, the official page for Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us describes Lugia as a Legendary Pokémon celebrated at the Wind Festival and Zeraora as a Mythical Pokémon that emits large electrical currents and moves through the air at lightning speed. Those descriptions are not a head-to-head result and do not show which is stronger.

How to compare two Pokémon fairly
For a specific matchup or tier list, name the Pokémon and the episode or film being compared. Then separate what the story shows from what you infer:
Rank #3
- Product Size (H x W x D): 8.5 x 5.3 x 4.1 inches (21.5 x 13.5 x 10.5 cm) (with pedestal) (H x W x D):
- (C) 2020 Pokemon. (C) 1995-2020 Nintendo/Creatures Inc./Game Freak Inc.
- Recommended Age: 15 years and up
- No assembly required
- Demonstrated feat: Describe the action or outcome actually shown or stated, rather than assuming a feat from the category label.
- Opponent and circumstances: Note who the Pokémon faced and any stated conditions, such as surprise, injury, restraint, or setting.
- Agency and assistance: Distinguish what the Pokémon does from what a trainer or another character contributes, and avoid claiming independence or assistance unless the story establishes it.
- Story stakes: A rescue, intervention, or disaster scene may reveal something different from a direct battle. Do not treat every dramatic event as a controlled contest.
- Evidence boundary: A result involving two named Pokémon supports a claim about that scene; it does not by itself rank every member of either category.
The official pages cited here are summaries, not a standardized, scene-by-scene battle record. Any more detailed feat comparison should be checked against the relevant episode or film itself.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why some questions remain open
Pokémon Support says that questions not answered within the games, animated movies, or TV shows are intended to be left to fans’ imagination and interpretation. Its guidance on Pokémon origins and histories supports a useful distinction: treat events shown or described in the anime as evidence, and label broader power rankings as interpretation when the story does not confirm them.
