Steam reviews are most useful as a way to narrow your RPG shortlist—not as a guarantee that you will enjoy a game. Start with the overall score for broad player sentiment, then check recent reviews, the language breakdown, and detailed praise and criticism that match what matters to you.

What Steam’s review score tells you

Steam’s Review Score categorizes games according to the percentage of positive reviews. It is a useful shorthand for broad reception, but it does not tell you what reviewers liked or disliked. A high score cannot reveal whether the praise is for the story, combat, performance, or another feature you care about; read written reviews to understand the reasons behind the rating. Steam’s review guidance explains how scores and reviews work.

Steam’s August 18, 2025 announcement says an overall score requires 10 reviews. Language-specific scores have stricter eligibility rules: a game must have more than 2,000 publicly visible reviews and at least 200 reviews in at least one language. When available, Steam displays the score associated with your primary language. Select “See language breakdown” to see how sentiment differs across languages. Steam notes that translation issues, cultural references, and network conditions can contribute to those differences. Steam’s announcement on language-based review scores describes the feature and its thresholds.

Check whether the game’s reception has changed

The overall score reflects a game’s longer-term reception; it may include reviews written before major updates or changes in support. Steam also highlights recently written reviews to help players assess a game’s current state. For eligible games, a recent score appears when enough recent reviews are available. Steam’s current review guidance says a recent score may be shown after a game has been out for more than 45 days, provided there are enough recent reviews. Steam has historically described the recent-review window as the preceding 30 days, but display rules and availability can change, so check the store page itself. Steam’s review guidance covers the current presentation.

C.A.R.D.S. RPG: The Misty Battlefield *Total Warfare Edition* PS5
  • Total Warfare Edition includes additional playable characters, mini-games, and content previously available as DLC
  • Combines roguelike-style deckbuilding with turn-based SRPGs for a brand-new experience
  • Over 100 cards to collect and build a deck with, all with unique designs

Compare the recent score and comments with the overall score when an RPG has been in Early Access for a long time or has received substantial post-launch updates. A difference can be a reason to investigate what changed, rather than proof that the game is now better or worse for every player.

Find reviews that answer your questions

Read several detailed positive and negative reviews instead of relying on the headline category or a single entertaining post. Steam describes useful reviews as ones that help prospective players decide whether they are likely to enjoy a game; relevant factors can include bugs and value. Look for specific explanations of the experience, not just a verdict.

Match review details to your priorities

  • Story and writing: Look for comments about tone, pacing, and narrative choices if those are central to your RPG experience.
  • Combat and progression: Check whether reviewers describe the combat style, difficulty, character-building, and progression in ways that fit what you want.
  • Stability and performance: Give concrete reports about bugs or performance more weight if you are concerned about technical problems.
  • Language and connectivity: Translation complaints matter most if you play in that language; online or server concerns matter more if your preferred play depends on connectivity.
  • Value: Consider whether reviewers explain what the game offers for its price, rather than treating a bare “worth it” judgment as universal.

Steam’s August 14, 2024 announcement says its helpfulness system moves some low-information reviews—such as one-word posts, ASCII art, and primarily playful memes—behind other reviews. That changes review ordering, not the game’s Review Score. Treat the ordering as a way to find more informative posts, then decide whether a reviewer’s reasons apply to your situation. Steam’s announcement about the helpfulness system explains the change.

Use this method to compare RPGs

  1. Shortlist with the overall score. Use it to identify games with broadly favorable reception, not to produce a final ranking.
  2. Check recent reception. If a recent score or recent reviews are shown, compare them with the overall score, particularly for games with long Early Access or post-launch histories.
  3. Confirm the language context. Check which language-specific score is displayed and open “See language breakdown” if the option is available.
  4. Read both favorable and critical reviews. Choose reviews that explain their judgments and address your priorities, such as narrative, combat, exploration, progression, bugs, performance, translation, connectivity, or value.
  5. Compare like with like. A complaint about multiplayer servers may not matter if you play offline, while a translation issue could be decisive if you rely on that language.
  6. Be cautious with limited evidence. A small pool of reviews gives you less context, and a score near a category boundary should not be treated as a precise measure of how much you will enjoy the game. Steam’s higher eligibility thresholds for language-specific scores are another reason to check what information is actually available.

What to know about who can review a game

A Steam review does not always mean the author bought the game directly through Steam. Steam says users can review a product after registering an external key, and users can review free games. Steam displays playtime alongside a review, which may help you understand the reviewer’s context. Neither fact, by itself, establishes that a particular review is unreliable. Steam’s review guidance describes these review conditions.
