Steam’s Top Sellers list ranks games by revenue, not by copies sold or number of active players. Valve says the ranking includes revenue from all game editions, DLC, and in-game transactions. A high position therefore signals strong revenue performance in the selected region and chart period—not a particular sales volume, player count, review score, or measure of lasting popularity.
What does Steam’s Top Sellers rank mean?
Steam’s real-time Top Sellers chart is a revenue ranking. Valve described the method as ranking games by “total revenue, including all sources such as DLC and in-game transactions.” The calculation can include standard and deluxe editions, add-ons, and in-game purchases; a DLC product can also appear as its own chart entry if it earns enough revenue to rank separately. Valve’s explanation of Steam’s charts dates to September 22, 2022.
That means Top Sellers is not a public count of copies, owners, or players. The cited Valve materials do not publish the exact formula, revenue amounts by title, unit sales, or the live chart’s precise calculation window. The label “right now” describes the live chart, but does not define a specific hourly period. It also does not establish whether the figure is gross receipts, net of refunds, or profit.

“Free To Play” describes the game’s entry price, not necessarily its revenue. Free-to-play games can earn from season passes, expansions, and other content, and those purchases can count toward the revenue ranking. Valve says the newer format was designed to make such revenue visible; it also combines editions of a game to reduce duplicate entries.

So a free-to-play title near the top is not evidence of a high number of paid base-game copies. Its position may reflect spending on eligible additional content, but the public chart does not disclose how much each source contributed.
How to read the chart columns
The live chart is labeled as the top 100 selling games “right now, by revenue.” Its columns add context, but they are not a sales ledger. Steam’s Top Sellers page shows rank, price, change, and weeks on the chart.
- Rank: A title’s relative position in the selected revenue chart. It does not show its revenue total.
- Price: The displayed current price or free-to-play status. A listed price alone cannot explain rank because editions, DLC, and in-game transactions can also contribute.
- Change: Positions gained or lost since the previous week, according to Valve. It is not a percentage change in sales.
- Weeks: How long the title has appeared on the Top Sellers chart. It does not reveal cumulative revenue or units sold over that time.
Why region and time period change the result
Choose the geography before comparing ranks
Steam provides country-specific charts to reflect regional differences. When available, the chart defaults to the user’s country, and readers can switch to a global chart or another country’s list. A rank in the United States, Japan, or the global chart is therefore not interchangeable with a rank in another view. Check the selected region before interpreting or sharing a position; the country shown on a live page can change.

Separate the live list from the weekly list
The live Top Sellers chart and the weekly Top Sellers chart use different time contexts. Valve defines the weekly chart’s revenue period as Monday at 10 a.m. Pacific through the following Monday at 10 a.m. Pacific. Its week-to-week movement and consecutive-weeks information refer to that chart context. Do not treat a live position as though it were the result for that defined week.
Steam also presents monthly Top New Releases and yearly retrospective sections. Those are distinct chart products, not alternate labels for the same live revenue ranking. Steam’s charts overview separates these views.
Top Sellers versus Most Played
To answer “Which games are selling best?” use a revenue chart. To answer “Which games have the most players?” use Steam’s player-count charts. Valve describes real-time Most Played as a current player ranking and also offers a daily view based on unique players over the preceding 24 hours.

A title can rank highly in revenue without having the largest active player base, and a large player count does not by itself establish a high revenue rank. The charts measure different things.
What you should—and shouldn’t—infer from a high rank
A high Top Sellers position indicates relative revenue performance in the chosen chart and period. It does not reveal exact revenue, copies sold, how many people own or currently play the game, or whether players consider it good. Nor does one strong position establish lasting popularity. For movement over time, use the weeks and change columns as limited chart-history context; for player activity, consult Most Played. Neither is a review score.

When comparing two positions, make the comparison meaningful by noting the metric (revenue or players), region (country or global), and time window (live or the defined Monday-to-Monday week). Also remember that Top Sellers includes editions, DLC, and in-game purchases—not just the base-game price.
