One copy of a game in a Steam Family lets only one member play that copy at a time. To have two members play the same eligible co-op title simultaneously, the family needs two copies. Steam calls its current feature Steam Families; many players still refer to it as Family Sharing. Eligibility depends on the specific game, and Remote Play Together is a separate way to stream certain local co-op games online.

What Steam Families means for co-op games

Steam Families gives members access to a shared library of eligible games while each person keeps their own Steam account and ownership. Steam says a family can have up to six members and describes the feature as intended for close family members in a household: “Steam Families are intended to contain your immediate family.” Participation requirements may change as Steam monitors use. See the Steam Families User Guide & FAQ.

The key distinction is between sharing a library and sharing a simultaneous game copy. Members can play different eligible family games at the same time, but a single copy of a particular game supports one player at a time. Valve illustrates the rule with Portal 2: one family-owned copy can be played by one member; a second copy allows another member to play simultaneously. This is Valve’s example of the policy, not a recommendation or a guarantee that every game is shareable. The Steam Families FAQ has the current rules.

Can two family members play the same co-op game at once?

Yes, if the family has two available copies of that game and the title is eligible for Steam Families. If only one member owns a copy, that copy cannot be used by one person while another family member independently launches it at the same time. When more than one member owns the game, Steam lets the player choose which member’s copy to use; if one copy is already in use, another available copy may be used.

This copy-count rule does not guarantee that the game’s multiplayer mode will work for your group. Check whether the game offers native online co-op, local co-op, or both, and whether it requires an online service or account. Steam Families supplies access to eligible copies; it does not create an online multiplayer mode.

Which games and DLC can be shared?

Sharing is determined title by title. Publishers control eligibility, and Steam lists categories that may be unavailable to family members. Existing exclusions from the older Family Sharing system carry forward into Steam Families. Check the game’s current Steam Store page and whether it appears in the family library rather than assuming a specific co-op title is shareable.

  • Games that require an additional third-party key, account, or subscription may not be shareable.
  • Free-to-play games and their purchased DLC are excluded from sharing under Steam’s listed rules.
  • Region-restricted games or DLC may not be shared across accounts in different regions.
  • A game may be unavailable if it does not support the other member’s operating system.
  • Publishers can opt out, and an owner’s games marked private are not shared with family members.

DLC access is limited: a borrower may use DLC owned by the game’s owner only when the publisher has marked that DLC shareable. Different DLC configurations can also affect whether a saved game works as expected. Steam’s official FAQ describes these eligibility and content rules.

Accounts, achievements, saves, and offline play

Each person launches a game using their own Steam account, so achievements are account-specific. Save behavior depends on the game. If a save relies on DLC that is not available to the account currently using the game, the save may not work as expected.

Steam says a family-library game can be played offline only when that game supports Family Sharing. Offline access is therefore a game-specific condition, not a general guarantee for every shared title. Games that depend on an online service or account may also require that service to play.

Steam Families and Remote Play Together are different

Remote Play Together lets players share a local co-op game online. It can help when a game has local co-op but lacks native online multiplayer. It is not the same as Steam Families: it does not transfer ownership, change a game’s sharing eligibility, or let two members independently use one family copy at once. Whether it suits a particular game depends on that game’s local co-op mode and current Steam support.

Family membership and invite limits

Steam’s rules can affect whether someone can join or switch families. Adults can leave a family but must wait one year from joining before creating or joining another one. A vacated family slot also has a one-year cooldown before a new member can occupy it. Someone may rejoin the last family they left without waiting if it has fewer than six members. Household participation checks and cooldowns can prevent an invitation from working. Consult the Steam Families FAQ for the current policy.

Before setting up co-op, check these details

  1. Confirm access: Check that the game appears as shareable in the family library and review its current Steam Store listing.
  2. Count copies: For each person who will launch the same title independently at once, make sure the family has an available copy.
  3. Confirm the co-op mode: Look for native online co-op or local co-op that may work through Remote Play Together.
  4. Check content and accounts: Verify that needed DLC is shareable and consider whether the game’s saves depend on it.
  5. Check connectivity: If offline play matters, confirm that the game supports Family Sharing offline; online services may impose separate requirements.
