A sportsbook bonus bet is promotional credit, not cash in your account. In the operator examples covered here, the bonus stake is not returned when the bet wins; only the winnings are credited. That is why a winning bonus bet can pay less than a cash bet of the same amount at the same odds. Exact rules depend on the sportsbook, offer and location, so check the live terms before using one.

What is a sportsbook bonus bet?

A bonus bet is promotional credit an operator lets you use to place a wager. It is distinct from your cash balance and may come with conditions such as an expiry time, eligible markets or a minimum odds threshold. UK Gambling Commission guidance says operators should make clear when a customer is wagering their own money and when they are using restricted bonus funds: UK Gambling Commission guidance on bonuses and free bets.

Do not assume every promotion described as a “bonus” works like a bonus bet. Bonus cash, free bets and other incentives can have different rules, including different wagering requirements. Check the offer’s exact wording.

How does a bonus bet differ from a cash bet?

Question Cash bet Bonus bet
Where does the stake come from? Your cash balance. Promotional credit, which may be held separately from cash.
What is credited after a win? Ordinarily, the stake plus profit, subject to the operator’s settlement rules. In the DraftKings US and Sportsbet Australia examples, the bonus stake is excluded, so only winnings are credited.
Can you withdraw the stake? It is your money, subject to account and bet settlement rules. DraftKings says its bonus bet cannot be withdrawn and must be played once before expiry; this is that operator’s rule, not a universal one.
What sets the restrictions? Bet rules and local regulation. The particular promotion’s terms, which may address expiry, eligible wagers and play-through.

The UK Gambling Commission’s consumer guidance explains the distinction between a customer’s own money and restricted bonus funds. For the operator-specific bonus-bet rules and examples above, see DraftKings’ US bonus bet help page and Sportsbet Australia’s bonus bet explanation.

Why is the payout smaller when you use a bonus bet?

When an operator excludes the bonus stake, it is not part of the winnings. Sportsbet Australia illustrates the calculation with a $20 bonus bet at decimal odds of 10: $20 × 10 = $200 gross return, less the $20 bonus stake, leaves $180 in winnings. This is a payout example, not a recommendation about an event or odds. DraftKings likewise states that its bonus-bet stake is not included in potential winnings and that winnings from a winning bonus bet go to the cash balance.

For this payout convention, the calculation is:

Bonus bet amount × decimal odds − bonus bet amount = winnings credited

How do you use a bonus bet?

  1. Open the promotion’s terms. Confirm that the credit is a bonus bet rather than bonus cash, and check its expiry, eligible sports and markets, odds limits, stake rules and settlement conditions.
  2. Choose an eligible event and market. Make sure the selection meets any stated minimum or maximum odds requirement. Eligibility is offer-specific.
  3. Select the bonus credit at the wager slip. Before submitting, verify that the slip shows the bonus bet as the funding source rather than your cash balance, and review the displayed potential winnings.
  4. Place the wager only if you accept the terms. Confirm what happens to the credit if the wager is void, pushed, canceled or settled as a dead heat, and whether any winnings are subject to further wagering rules.
  5. Check settlement and balances. After the result is settled, verify whether winnings went to cash or remain subject to restrictions, as specified by the offer.

Interface labels and steps vary by sportsbook and app version. The wager slip and live promotion terms are the key places to confirm which balance is being used and what the offer allows.

What terms should you check before accepting or using one?

  • Expiry: What exact date and time does the credit expire, and which timezone applies?
  • Eligible wagers: Which sports and markets qualify? Is there a minimum or maximum odds threshold?
  • Stake use: Must you place the full amount in one wager, or can the credit be split or combined?
  • Voids and pushes: Is the credit returned after a void, push, dead heat or canceled event, and when?
  • Winnings: Are they cashable after settlement, or do additional wagering requirements apply?
  • Qualifying action: Must you make a deposit or place a cash bet first? Can you decline the promotion or withdraw from it?
  • Local rules: Does your jurisdiction impose requirements or restrictions on the offer?

These are questions to check, not universal restrictions. DraftKings’ US help pages describe that operator’s conditions, while the UK Gambling Commission advises consumers to review restrictions before accepting offers: UK Gambling Commission consumer guidance.

What happens if a bonus bet pushes or expires?

The result depends on the promotion’s settlement and expiry terms. A push, void, dead heat or cancellation may affect whether the credit is returned, whether it is reduced, and how long you have to use it again. An expired credit may no longer be usable. Do not assume the stake or token will be restored; check the offer terms for the exact scenario and timing.

How do wagering requirements affect the value?

A wagering requirement says how much qualifying wagering is required before bonus funds or related winnings can be withdrawn. For example, the UK Gambling Commission illustrated the arithmetic with a £10 bonus subject to a 50-times requirement: £500 in wagering. That was an example published in 2025, not a statement of a currently permissible offer.

For Great Britain, the Commission’s rewards-and-bonuses code in force from 19 January 2026 caps applicable wagering requirements at ten times, requires terms to be clear, transparent, fair and accessible, and prohibits combining multiple gambling product types within an incentive. This is a Great Britain regulatory rule, not a universal sportsbook term or a rule for other jurisdictions. See the UK Gambling Commission’s implementation information.

Does a bonus bet make a wager risk-free?

No. Promotional credit does not guarantee a win or make an outcome profitable. UK Gambling Commission research has reported consumer confusion about separating personal money from bonus money and about how promotional offers can influence perceived risk and value. That research concerns UK consumers; it does not establish that every customer reacts the same way. Treat the credit as restricted, conditional value, not “free money” or a guaranteed return. See the Commission’s research on promotional offers.
