Under the Income-tax Act, 1961, a sports medal bonus is not automatically tax-free. Section 10(17A) excludes qualifying awards for proficiency in sports and games from total income only when the award was instituted by the Central or a State Government, or approved by the Central Government. The Income Tax Department names rewards for Olympic, Commonwealth and Asian Games medal winners as examples, subject to those statutory conditions.
When can a sports award be exempt?
Section 10(17A) of the Income-tax Act, 1961 covers qualifying payments in cash or kind made in pursuance of awards for proficiency in sports and games. The award must have been instituted by the Central or a State Government, or approved by the Central Government. The approval proviso specifies that an approval order has effect for the assessment year or years named in that order.
The Income Tax Department’s explanatory material on exempt income includes rewards for Olympic, Commonwealth and Asian Games medal winners among its examples. That example does not remove the statutory conditions or establish that every payment connected with those events is exempt.

The payment’s label—“medal bonus,” “prize money” or “incentive”—does not decide its tax treatment. Identify the payer and the award or scheme under which the payment was made, then establish whether the award meets the institution or Central Government approval requirement.

How the Ministry’s cash-incentive scheme fits
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports publishes a Scheme of Cash Incentive to Medal Winners in International Sports Events and their Coaches. The version available is amended as of 1 February 2025 and describes eligibility and incentives for specified events. It provides scheme context, but the existence of the scheme—or a payment’s connection to a medal—does not by itself establish that a particular receipt qualifies for section 10(17A). Confirm how the actual payment relates to the statutory award conditions.
Where to report the award in an ITR
Do not assume a particular return form, schedule or field from the exemption rule alone. The official material reviewed does not establish a specific ITR disclosure field for a section 10(17A) sports award. The Income Tax Department’s downloads portal lists return forms and filing utilities, as well as resources for the Income-tax Act, 2025 and Income-tax Rules, 2026. Check the applicable tax-year law and current return form before deciding how to disclose a receipt.

The exact corresponding award-exemption provision in the Income-tax Act, 2025 is not established here. For a receipt governed by the new Act, verify the provision and the relevant year’s return form in current official materials rather than carrying over a section number or filing instruction from the 1961 Act. Which return applies can also depend on a taxpayer’s other income and filing circumstances.

Records to keep when checking eligibility
- The payment advice or other record identifying the payer, amount, date and stated purpose.
- The award, government scheme or other instrument under which the payment was made.
- Evidence that the award was instituted by the Central or a State Government, or the Central Government approval order and its specified assessment years, where applicable.
- The relevant tax-year law and ITR form used to determine reporting treatment.
