Spencer Jones struck out to open the Yankees’ sixth inning against Boston on Sept. 30, 2026, but reached first when Garrett Crochet’s pitch got away. After a replay review overturned the initial out call, Jones advanced to third, scored in a six-run rally, then struck out again to end the inning. The Elias Sports Bureau identified it as the first postseason inning in which a player scored after striking out both to start and end the frame, as reported by the Associated Press.
How Jones reached first after striking out
The Yankees led 2-1 when Jones came up to start the bottom of the sixth against Boston starter Garrett Crochet. Jones swung through a sweeper in the dirt. The pitch got past catcher Adley Rutschman, allowing Jones to run toward first on a dropped third strike.
First-base umpire John Libka initially called Jones out. The Yankees appealed, and the video umpire at the commissioner’s office reversed the call. Jones was safe at first on the wild pitch, so his strikeout did not become the inning’s first out.

Manager Aaron Boone said he had not initially thought the ball had gotten far enough away to matter: “I couldn’t believe he was there. I saw the ball squirt away a little bit. I didn’t think that much of it, and looked up and I was, like, ’Oh, he’s safe.’”

The Yankees added five more runs in the inning: Austin Wells hit a sacrifice fly, Ryan McMahon grounded out to bring in a run, Ben Rice was intentionally walked, and Cody Bellinger hit a three-run homer. Jones’s run was part of the six-run outburst.

Why Jones struck out again in the same inning
Jones returned to bat later in the frame and struck out against Garrett Whitlock’s slider to end the sixth. Because he had reached first on the wild pitch after his opening strikeout, he had stayed in the game long enough to score and then make another plate appearance.

The Associated Press reported that the Elias Sports Bureau identified Jones as the first player in postseason history to score in an inning he started and ended with strikeouts. Elias also found no regular-season example since the expansion era began in 1969. That 1969 date is the starting point of the regular-season comparison, not a statistic about Jones’s performance.

The finding is specifically about scoring while striking out as both the first and final batter of an inning. It should not be broadened into a claim that Jones was the first player ever to strike out twice and score in any inning.
