Solana does not pair a conventional application server with one backing database. Its programs are executable code, while their mutable state lives in separate accounts that are passed into instructions. Thinking of programs as web servers and data accounts as a database can help at first—but it is only an analogy. Solana accounts have explicit ownership and write rules that shape how data is stored and changed.

How does Solana’s account model work?

An account is Solana’s common container for on-chain state. It is identified by a 32-byte address and includes a lamport balance, a byte array of data, an owner program ID, an executable flag, and a deprecated rent_epoch field. One SOL equals 1,000,000,000 lamports. Solana’s account structure documentation lists a maximum account data size of 10 MiB. Solana Documentation: Account Structure

The owner field names the program that controls an account’s data—not the person or wallet that may have initiated a transaction. The executable flag distinguishes program accounts from ordinary data accounts. Program code and mutable application state are separate: instructions invoke programs and pass the accounts those programs need to read or modify. Solana’s documentation summarizes the architecture this way: “Programs are stateless and all mutable state lives in separate data accounts passed via instructions.” Account Types · Core Concepts

How is this different from a conventional application and database?

Conventional Web2 pattern Solana pattern
Application code runs on a server and reads or writes a backing database. Programs are executable accounts; mutable state is held in separate data accounts and supplied to instructions.
The application’s database layer typically defines how records are accessed and changed. Account ownership and transaction rules determine which program may change account data or debit its lamports.

The analogy “program equals web server; data accounts equal database” is useful only to orient yourself. A Solana program is not a conventional web server, and its accounts are not a relational database with tables and rows. Account data is bytes; the program and its data format determine how those bytes should be interpreted. An application may need to fetch account data and deserialize it according to the program-defined format.

Who can change an account?

Ownership is a runtime security boundary. Solana’s official documentation states, “The owner program is the only program that can:”

  • Modify the account’s data.
  • Deduct lamports from the account.

A program may credit lamports to a writable account even when it does not own it. Instructions must also respect writable and read-only constraints; a read-only account cannot be changed in that instruction. These rules are enforced by the runtime, rather than being merely conventions in an application’s code. Solana Documentation: Modification Rules

What do the account fields mean in practice?

  • lamports: The account’s balance, denominated in lamports.
  • data: A byte array whose meaning depends on the account’s use and the format expected by its program.
  • owner: The program ID authorized to modify the data and debit lamports.
  • executable: Whether the account represents a program rather than ordinary data.
  • rent_epoch: A deprecated field; it should not be treated as a counter for an active recurring charge.

In some upgradeable deployments, executable bytes are stored in a separate ProgramData account. That implementation detail means it is not safe to assume every executable account contains the program’s code directly. Solana Documentation: Account Types

Does Solana charge recurring rent for accounts?

Accounts need a minimum lamport balance proportional to their data size to keep data stored on-chain. Solana’s documentation describes this as a refundable storage balance and says ongoing rent collection is disabled. So, although the field name rent_epoch remains in the account structure, it does not mean accounts currently pay recurring rent. Check the current official account documentation when building software that depends on storage requirements. Solana Documentation: Account Structure

Why this model changes the way you think about blockchain state

The key shift is to stop imagining that each program carries its own mutable database. A program supplies logic; state is held separately, and an instruction names the accounts involved. That separation makes account addresses, ownership, writable access, and data layout central to understanding what a transaction can do. It also explains why inspecting raw bytes alone may not tell you what an account means: interpretation depends on the relevant program’s format.
