Snoopza says its Android app lets parents review a child’s location, call logs, text messages and web activity; premium features advertised by the company include keystroke and social-media monitoring, call recording and screenshots. Those are vendor claims, not independently verified results. Because this kind of monitoring can reveal sensitive information, compare it with less intrusive parental controls and consider the child’s privacy, age, and the specific safety need before choosing it.

What Snoopza says parents can monitor

Snoopza describes its service as intended for parents monitoring their own minor children, as well as employers overseeing company devices with employees’ knowledge. The company says an account holder creates an account, downloads an installation file and installs the software on an Android device they own or are authorized to monitor. Its feature descriptions and plan terms may change, so check the current offering before signing up. Snoopza’s homepage and its Android keylogger page describe the product.

What Snoopza advertises What the company says it can include
Free account Location, call logs, SMS and web activity; Snoopza says recent data is available for 30 days.
Premium features Call recording, social-media monitoring, screenshots, keystroke monitoring, contacts and calendar data.

These are the vendor’s descriptions, not a guarantee that every feature works on every device or account. Verify the current feature list, plan limits and compatibility before relying on them.

How Snoopza works on Android

After installation, the company says activity logs are sent to the account for review. The monitored phone must be switched on and connected to the internet for logs to appear. If the account is configured to transfer data only over Wi-Fi, the phone needs a Wi-Fi connection. Snoopza’s help page also documents uninstalling the program from the monitored device; the app should not be treated as impossible for the device user to discover or remove. See the company’s help page for its operational and removal instructions.

Can parents see text messages with Snoopza?

Snoopza advertises SMS monitoring, so reviewing text-message activity is among the capabilities the vendor says it offers. The company also advertises keystroke and social-media monitoring on some plans. These capabilities can expose more than a child’s safety-related conversations: keystrokes may include passwords and other private information.

The scale of the privacy issue is not unique to Snoopza. In a 2022 study of Android monitoring apps, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada found that 85% of the studied apps gathered text messages and call logs, 87% offered GPS tracking or geofencing, 50% had a keylogger, and 67% supported social-media chat services. These figures describe the report’s app sample, not Snoopza specifically or every monitoring app. Read the commissioner’s report.

Privacy, consent and legal considerations

Snoopza says users should monitor only devices they own or are legally authorized to monitor, and should inform the device user where the law requires it. That is the vendor’s guidance, not universal legal advice. Rules vary by location and circumstance, particularly for recording communications and monitoring adults. Being a parent does not automatically resolve every legal or ethical question.

Monitoring can also affect trust within a family. Before using a tool that collects message contents or keystrokes, consider whether a narrower control would address the concern. Where appropriate, explain what is monitored, why, who can see the data and when supervision will be reviewed.

Google Play policy says monitoring apps that collect and transmit personal or sensitive data are generally prohibited unless they are designed and marketed exclusively for parental monitoring or enterprise management and meet the stated requirements. Its Accessibility API guidance requires, for certain non-accessibility uses, a declaration, clear in-app disclosure and affirmative user consent, and limits some uses. The policy alone does not establish whether Snoopza is distributed through Google Play or whether it complies with these requirements. Google Play’s monitoring-app policy and Accessibility API guidance explain the rules.

Family Link: a less intrusive option for some needs

Google Family Link may suit families whose goals are location awareness, screen-time boundaries and app oversight rather than reviewing keystrokes or message contents. Google says parents can manage screen-time limits, see the location of a child’s signed-in and active Android devices, approve app downloads and purchases, adjust content visibility, and review app permissions. Availability depends on the child’s account and device setup. See Google Family Link’s parent information.

How to choose a monitoring approach

  1. Define the safety concern. Decide whether you need location, app limits or approval, or whether you have a specific reason to consider reviewing communications. Match the tool to that need rather than collecting data by default.
  2. Compare the data collected. Check whether a service gathers location, message content, call details, keystrokes or social-media activity, and who can access the account.
  3. Talk about visibility and consent. Consider the child’s age, explain supervision where appropriate, and check the laws that apply to your location and circumstances.
  4. Confirm compatibility and reliability. Verify current device and account requirements. For Snoopza, the phone must be on and connected for logs to appear, subject to its Wi-Fi-only setting.
  5. Review retention and account security. Check how long data remains available, what protections secure the account, and how to remove the software or stop collection.
  6. Reassess over time. A monitoring approach that may be appropriate for one age or situation may become unnecessarily intrusive as a child’s needs change.

What past spyware research does—and does not—show

An FTC-hosted research paper reported that its authors found Snoopza to be a rebranded version of HoverWatch based on similarities in APKs, backend and websites. That is a historical finding, not proof of current ownership or current technical equivalence. The paper also described configurations recommended by spyware apps, such as disabling Google Play protections and notifications and granting permissions; those observations should not be treated as verified current Snoopza instructions.

The paper’s authors wrote: “Additionally, we note that seven apps (Clevguard, HoverWatch, iKeyMonitor, Meuspy, Spyhuman, Spy24, and TheTruthSpy) abuse accessibility to automatically click buttons (e.g., automatically clicking on the grant permission button when the app is requesting MediaProjection permission), a behavior much like that of malware.” This statement concerns the seven named apps, not Snoopza.
