Smartphones and social media may shape how children and teenagers see their bodies and think about eating, especially when use involves appearance comparisons, edited photos, feedback-seeking, or harmful eating-related content. The evidence points to possible pathways and associations—not proof that a phone or social media alone causes an eating disorder. What a young person encounters, how they engage with it, and how it affects them all matter.

Is social media safe for my kids?

There is no single answer for every child, and current evidence does not establish a universally safe amount of use for body image. In its 2023 advisory, the U.S. Surgeon General reported that up to 95% of U.S. young people ages 13–17 use a social media platform, and one third of teenagers say they use social media “almost constantly.” In the same advisory, 46% of adolescents ages 13–17 said social media made them feel worse about their body image. That figure describes what adolescents reported in a survey; it is not a causal estimate or a prediction for an individual child.

The Surgeon General also noted that important gaps remain in understanding social media’s mental-health effects. The American Psychological Association’s 2023 advisory likewise says it cannot be determined that social media causes harmful impacts on youth. These qualifications do not mean concerns should be dismissed. They mean a child’s experience and the kind of use deserve more attention than a simple “safe” or “unsafe” label.

How can online experiences affect body image and eating?

Social media can make appearance a frequent focus: a young person may see idealized images, compare their body with influencers or peers, post a selfie, and monitor likes or comments. Photo editing can further blur the line between ordinary appearance and an altered image. Some online material may also promote disordered eating. These are potential contexts for distress, not proof that every child who sees them will be harmed.

The American Academy of Pediatrics’ 2026 technical report describes an association between comparing physical appearance on social media and potential body dissatisfaction. APA materials also connect appearance-focused comparison and close attention to one’s own images and feedback with poorer body image, disordered eating, and depressive symptoms, particularly among girls. Both organizations caution against treating the association as proof of cause.

Use patterns can differ in ways that matter. For example, passive viewing of appearance-focused material is not the same experience as posting a photo and repeatedly checking feedback; edited or idealized imagery differs from a varied feed; and an unsupervised experience may differ from one a young person can discuss with a trusted adult. These are useful distinctions for a conversation, not a validated clinical score or a formula for predicting harm. The AAP notes that how social media is consumed may matter as much as duration.

What does the smartphone ownership study show?

A U.S. Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development cohort study published September 25, 2026, analyzed 8,957 adolescents. In the study, 69.5% owned a smartphone at age 12. Adjusted longitudinal analyses associated ownership at 12 with higher reported likelihood of several eating-disorder symptoms at age 14:

  • Inappropriate compensatory behaviors to prevent weight gain: RR 1.50, 95% confidence interval 1.16–1.94.
  • Self-worth tied to weight: RR 2.03, 95% confidence interval 1.28–3.19.
  • Any measured eating-disorder symptom: RR 1.49, 95% confidence interval 1.19–1.87.

The JAMA Network Open study was observational: it found associations, not proof that smartphone ownership caused the symptoms. The outcomes were reported symptoms, not clinical diagnoses. The study measured parent-reported phone ownership at age 12; it did not establish which apps adolescents used, what they viewed, or how often they used social media. It therefore cannot identify a social-media mechanism or isolate the phone itself as the cause.

Can social media also help?

Yes. Online support and pro-recovery communities can give some young people connection and positive role models, according to the AAP. Their effect depends on the young person and the community: a supportive space can offer belonging, while the same subject matter can also become a source of comparison. A calm check-in about how a particular account, conversation, or group leaves a child feeling is more informative than assuming every online space has the same effect.

What can parents and caregivers do?

Start with curiosity rather than blame. A child is not at fault for feeling affected by what they see, and a caregiver does not need to treat every phone or social media use as dangerous. The Surgeon General recommends a family media plan, tech-free zones, responsible-use modeling, age-appropriate technology skills, and reporting cyberbullying and abuse. The AAP also emphasizes caregiver mentoring and attention to content as well as time.

  1. Ask about the experience. Invite the child to describe what they see, whether they compare their appearance with others, and how posting or feedback affects their mood. Listen without criticizing their body or turning the conversation into a debate about weight.
  2. Review content and interactions together. Help them notice edited or idealized imagery, appearance-focused comparison, and content that promotes harmful eating behaviors. Encourage them to unfollow, mute, block, or report accounts or interactions that distress them, and to seek supportive sources instead.
  3. Agree on boundaries as a family. Make a family media plan that fits the child’s age and routines. Consider shared tech-free times or places, and revisit expectations as circumstances change. A time limit alone cannot guarantee protection from body-image harm.
  4. Model the habits you want to encourage. Put devices away during agreed family time, discuss how online images can be altered, and demonstrate respectful ways to talk about bodies and food.
  5. Use supervision that fits the child. Stay engaged with younger children’s online experiences and adjust oversight as children mature. Make it clear that they can come to you about upsetting content, pressure, bullying, or abuse without fear of being blamed.

If you are concerned about a child’s eating behavior, body-image distress, or emotional well-being, consult a qualified pediatric or mental-health professional. Social media use or a single behavior is not enough to diagnose an eating disorder; a professional can assess the child’s situation and advise on appropriate support.
