Smart garments usually get power from a battery or another supply designed to connect to the garment. Researchers are also developing ways to store energy in textiles or harvest it from movement, but those approaches remain research directions—not universal replacements for batteries. For a garment, a power source is useful only if it can run the intended electronics while staying comfortable, durable, washable and practical to manufacture.

Why smart garments need power—and why it is hard to supply

Active smart textiles use electricity to run functions such as sensing or responding to the wearer or environment. Passive textiles can offer useful material properties without powered electronics. IARPA’s SMART ePANTS program describes active smart textiles as fabrics designed to change functionality in response to environmental changes or user input, and identifies system elements such as power sources, sensors, computation and storage, and conductive interconnects.

That system must work as clothing, not just as an electronic circuit. A conventional supply can be too bulky, heavy or conspicuous for unobtrusive integration. The garment also has to accommodate movement and routine care. As Hannah Hatcher noted in a 2022 Nature Reviews Materials research highlight, finding safe, flexible and lightweight supplies remains a challenge for wearable electronics.

How do smart clothes get power today?

Conventional or removable batteries

A battery or external power bank is the most familiar option when a garment is designed for one. Its practicality depends on the garment’s specified module and how it fits: placement, weight, bulk, connection and removal for washing all matter. There is no universal smart-garment connector or compatibility standard established by the cited sources, so use only a supply the maker specifies.

Textile-integrated energy storage

Instead of attaching a conventional supply, researchers are investigating storage built into textile materials. The EU-funded Powering_eTextiles project investigated ink-jet-printed energy storage based on two-dimensional nanosheets, with the aim of assessing technical and economic feasibility and scalable production. Those are project aims, not evidence that the technology is widely commercially available.

Can clothing generate electricity from movement?

Motion harvesting aims to convert movement into electrical energy. Triboelectric approaches use electrical effects associated with contact and separation; piezoelectric approaches generate charge when certain materials are mechanically deformed. In a 2022 research highlight, Hatcher described a lead-free perovskite/polymer nanofiber composite developed to harvest energy from human movement. The highlight also notes that earlier approaches faced challenges including inadequate output or material-toxicity concerns.

This is a reported research result, not proof that ordinary clothing can continuously charge itself or power every wearable device. A harvester must provide useful output for the electronics in question, and the garment still needs a workable way to store or deliver energy when the device needs it.

What textile supercapacitors and hybrid generators add

Textile supercapacitors

Supercapacitors are being studied as textile-based energy-storage components. A 2022 review in Advanced Science discusses wearable textile supercapacitors alongside the practical criteria that matter for use in garments. Energy storage performance alone is not enough: flexibility, washability, durability, scalability and a path from laboratory work to industrial production also count.

Hybrid textile generators

A 2026 review in Energy Conversion and Management: X covers hybrid textile nanogenerators that combine harvesting mechanisms. It highlights integration, durability and scale-up as important issues. A review of possible approaches does not establish that a commercial hybrid garment is available.

How to compare smart-garment power approaches

No common head-to-head dataset in these sources establishes a single best technology. A useful comparison starts with the needs of the particular garment and device:

What You Get: Detachable Battery x2, Charging Case x1, Nose Mount x1, Temple Mount x1, USB-C Cable x1, and Cleaning Wipe x1.
  • Useful output: Can the supply deliver enough power for the intended sensor or other electronics, when they need it?
  • Comfort and bulk: Does the source or storage component preserve flexibility and fit without an uncomfortable or conspicuous module?
  • Durability: Can it withstand bending, stretching and routine wear?
  • Washing: Must the supply or electronics be removed, or is there a specified protection method? Follow the garment’s care instructions.
  • Storage and charging: Does the system need a separate storage component or periodic charging, and how is that handled?
  • Manufacturing: Can the approach be made reliably and at scale, rather than only demonstrated in laboratory work?

These criteria explain why a promising energy-harvesting material is not automatically a complete garment power system: generation, storage, electrical connections, comfort and care all have to work together.

Can a smart shirt be washed?

There is no single washability rule for all smart garments. Whether a shirt can be washed, and whether a battery or electronic module must be removed first, depends on its construction and care instructions. The reviews identify washability as an important challenge for textile energy-storage technologies, but they do not establish a universal washing method. Check the specific garment’s instructions before washing it; do not assume a textile-integrated component is safe for laundering simply because it is flexible.

What is available now—and what remains research?

A maker-specified removable battery or external supply can be a practical option for a garment designed to accept it. By contrast, ink-jet-printed textile storage, motion-harvesting composites, textile supercapacitors and hybrid generators are research approaches whose usefulness depends on output, integration, durability, washing and manufacturability. The cited work does not establish a universal battery replacement or a single winning approach.
