Sky Q satellite TV follows a simple path: the dish sends a satellite signal through its LNB and cabling to the Sky Q box, and the box connects to your television over HDMI. Broadband is a separate connection used for many on-demand, app and interactive features; it does not replace the dish feed for live satellite television.
How the signal travels from the dish to your TV
- The dish receives the satellite signal. A component on the dish called a low-noise block downconverter, or LNB, converts the received signal into a form that can travel through coaxial cable to the receiver.
- Dish cabling carries the feed to the Sky Q box. Sky’s setup guidance shows the dish cable or cables connecting to the receiver. The box is the part that receives the satellite feed and provides the Sky Q interface. Sky’s connection instructions cover the physical setup.
- HDMI carries the box’s picture and sound to the television. Connect the Sky Q box to the TV with HDMI, then select the corresponding HDMI input on the television.
In short: dish and LNB → satellite cabling → Sky Q receiver → HDMI → television. The receiver handles the satellite input and produces the interface and output you watch; the television does not connect directly to the dish.
Which dish connections can a Sky Q box use?
The exact dish wiring depends on the receiver model and the installation. Sky’s specification for its 1TB UHD receiver lists two satellite inputs, DVB-S/S2 demodulation, and support for wideband and dCSS Unicable LNBs. These are model-specific capabilities, not a promise that every Sky Q box or household has the same inputs or wiring. Sky’s receiver specifications identify capabilities by model.
The Digital TV Group’s handbook describes Sky Q installations using either a dSCR-fed cable or two wideband signal cables. In a wideband installation, it gives a range of 290–2340 MHz carried on each cable. This is a technical specification for that arrangement, not a universal description of every Sky Q installation. If you are replacing a box or troubleshooting a connection, check the receiver model and the type of dish system already installed before changing cables or equipment. Sky’s replacement-box guidance also addresses internet setup, viewing-card pairing and UHD settings.
What broadband does—and what happens if it goes down
The dish feed and broadband do different jobs. Sky says live television and recordings remain available on a box that has never connected to broadband. When a previously connected box loses its broadband connection, some on-demand material may be available through the dish, but other on-demand content, apps and interactive features may be unavailable or limited. The available features depend on whether the box has ever connected, as well as its service and setup. Sky explains the differences between offline and connected features here.

So, a broadband outage does not automatically mean Sky Q stops working. It does affect connected services, and not every on-demand title should be assumed to arrive through the satellite dish.

How Sky Q works in more than one room
Sky says each television in a Sky Q Multiscreen setup needs its own Sky box. A Sky Q Mini is the additional-room device for Sky Q customers, and using it requires the applicable subscription or Sky Q experience. A Mini does not provide UHD. Check Sky’s current Multiscreen requirements and terms.

What you need for Sky Q UHD
UHD depends on the receiver, subscription, television and HDMI connection all meeting the relevant requirements. Sky’s UHD guidance lists:
- A Sky Q 1TB UHD or 2TB UHD box.
- Qualifying HD and Ultra HD add-ons or the Sky Q experience pack.
- A UHD television that supports 3840 × 2160 at 50 frames per second and HDCP 2.2.
- The specified Sky HDMI 2.0 cable.
Sky states that UHD does not work on a Sky Q Mini. Product models and subscription eligibility can change, so verify your exact receiver and current terms in Sky’s UHD guidance before assuming a setup will support it.

What to check when setting up or diagnosing a Sky Q connection
- No satellite picture: Check that the dish cable or cables are connected to the Sky Q box and that the installation’s feed type is compatible with the receiver. Dish alignment, LNB or cabling problems may require an installer.
- Live TV works, but apps or some on-demand features do not: Check the box’s broadband connection. These services rely on connected features, unlike the basic satellite path for live TV.
- UHD is missing: Confirm the receiver model, eligible subscription, TV resolution and HDCP 2.2 support, and the required HDMI connection. A Sky Q Mini is not UHD-capable.
- Adding another room: Plan for a separate Sky box at each television and check the applicable Multiscreen subscription requirements.
Sky’s instructions for connecting a Sky Q box explain the basic cabling, while its model specifications help distinguish receiver capabilities. Features can vary with model, location, software and current Sky terms.
