A porous metal–organic framework (MOF) can selectively capture acetylene from ethylene—a separation that matters because even trace acetylene can poison catalysts used to make polyethylene. In a 2016 laboratory study, SIFSIX materials showed promising separation performance, and the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) reported that the treated stream contained less than 2 parts per million (ppm) acetylene. The work suggests a possible alternative to conventional hydrogenation, but it does not establish commercial cost savings or current industrial deployment.
Why does ethylene need to be purified?
Ethylene is a major chemical feedstock, including for polyethylene production. Acetylene can occur as a contaminant, but it is harmful to the polymerization catalysts used downstream. The separation challenge is to remove the unwanted acetylene without losing too much of the valuable ethylene.
How can a MOF trap acetylene?
SIFSIX materials are porous copper coordination networks, a type of metal–organic framework. Their pore size and chemical environment are designed to favor acetylene adsorption over ethylene. As a gas mixture passes through the adsorbent, acetylene preferentially binds inside its pores, leaving an ethylene-rich stream.

This is adsorption: molecules attach to a material’s surface or internal pore surfaces. It differs from hydrogenation, the conventional approach described in the coverage of the work, which chemically converts acetylene into ethylene. Hydrogenation can also convert some desired ethylene into ethane, so selective capture could avoid that particular loss. The proposed process advantage is promising, but the cited work does not quantify an industrial energy or cost saving.
What did the 2016 study demonstrate?
Cui and colleagues reported laboratory measurements for SIFSIX MOFs under specified test conditions. The figures below describe different performance measures, not interchangeable estimates of plant output or commercial economics.

These are results from the study, not industrial cost measurements. The original paper is Cui et al., Science (2016).
How clean was the treated ethylene?
NIST reported that the researchers reduced acetylene in ethylene to less than 2 ppm. In the same account, NIST gives 5 ppm as the polyethylene manufacturing requirement; the reported treated stream was therefore below that stated threshold. This is a result reported by NIST about the study, not evidence that a commercial plant has adopted the material. NIST’s 2016 account.

Which SIFSIX material suits which mixture?
The materials should not be treated as having one universal ranking. Their reported strengths depend on the incoming acetylene concentration and on which separation measure is being compared.

Does this mean ethylene will be cheaper to produce?
Not yet on the evidence reported here. The study shows that SIFSIX materials can selectively adsorb acetylene and achieve promising laboratory separation results. Avoiding the conversion of some ethylene into ethane during hydrogenation could be beneficial, and selective adsorption may offer a different route to purification. But the cited sources do not establish a realized cost reduction, lifecycle-emissions saving, or current industrial deployment.
