SF-PULSE is a newly reported lensless imaging method designed to track living cells over extended periods without stains or fluorescent labels. In a research announcement published by Tampere University on 8 October 2026, the university describes a compact system intended to operate inside a cell-culture incubator and a reconstruction method that derives quantitative phase information from a single measurement image. The work points to a way to watch cell-level changes without repeatedly taking cultures out for imaging, but its proposed research applications are not yet established clinical uses or commercial capabilities.
What SF-PULSE does
SF-PULSE is a lensless quantitative phase imaging method. Rather than forming an image through a conventional microscope lens or relying on fluorescent labels, it uses information in light passing through cells to reconstruct quantitative phase information. The method combines an AI-based neural network with physics-informed image reconstruction, according to Tampere University’s 8 October 2026 announcement.
The underlying paper, “Single-frame lensless phase retrieval using learned sensor plane initialization,” was published in Applied Physics Letters on 21 September 2026, as reported by the university. Igor Shevkunov, the study’s first author, says the approach reconstructs quantitative phase from one measurement image without complex optical hardware. The university says the physics-informed reconstruction is intended to reduce computational errors and improve stability.

Many living cells are transparent, which makes their structure difficult to observe with ordinary bright-field imaging. Stains and fluorescent labels can make features easier to see, but they add labels to the experiment. Quantitative phase imaging instead measures phase shifts as light passes through a sample, allowing researchers to observe unlabeled cells and track changes such as growth, size, and biomass. The method does not provide the same chemically specific information as a fluorescent marker or assay.

For long-term studies, label-free observation can help researchers follow changing cells without adding a stain for each measurement. The university describes SF-PULSE as intended to monitor cells continuously for hours or days. That duration is a qualitative description in the announcement, not a reported quantified trial result for a particular experiment.
How the incubator design could help
Cell cultures are typically maintained in controlled incubators. Tampere University says conventional quantitative phase imaging systems can be large and complex to operate inside them, while some lensless phase-retrieval approaches need multiple images or additional optical components. SF-PULSE is described as a compact system designed for incubator use and as retrieving phase from a single measurement image. Keeping observation in the incubator could reduce the need to remove cultures repeatedly, a practical aim rather than a demonstrated outcome for every experimental setup.

A population average can conceal differences between cells. The university says researchers could use the method to track individual cells as they grow, move, divide, and gain or lose biomass. Meenakshisundaram Kandhavelu, a university lecturer and head of the Molecular Signaling research group, notes that individual-cell trajectories can be more informative than population averages alone.

That makes cell-level tracking potentially useful for dynamic studies where cells respond differently over time. The imaging method can reveal phase-derived features and changes; by itself, it does not establish why a cell changed or prove a treatment effect.
Potential applications—and what remains unproven
Tampere University identifies drug-response studies, toxicity screening, and investigation of cell-death mechanisms as possible applications. These are prospective uses, not demonstrated clinical performance or evidence that SF-PULSE is already a validated screening platform.

What the available account does not establish
The university announcement does not provide quantitative accuracy or error benchmarks, sample counts, detailed training data, cell lines, a complete experimental protocol, or a quantified duration for a specific SF-PULSE experiment. It also does not name a commercial product, model, manufacturer, or purchase channel. Those details are needed to assess reproducibility, compare performance, or determine whether the system is available to laboratories.

For example, a separate 2026 MaRSEL article reports approximately 1 µm resolution within a 2 mm-radius circular field of view and more than 130 minutes of continuous endothelial-cell imaging; those measurements are not SF-PULSE specifications. A 2021 study of a distinct lensfree holographic microscope reported cell-culture observations lasting several days to more than a week, which likewise does not establish SF-PULSE’s experimental duration. The available sources do not report a head-to-head comparison among these approaches.
