Usually, choosing a nearer game server can make multiplayer play more responsive because data has less distance to travel. But proximity is only a starting point: the route your traffic takes, network stability, server conditions, and the game’s networking design can matter just as much. Choose the region that delivers the lowest stable in-game latency, not simply the one that looks closest on a map.
What server location changes
Ping is round-trip latency: the time for data to travel from your device to a game server and back. Riot Games Support defines it in those terms and says that, when a connection is working normally, physical distance is the largest contributor to latency for its services (Riot Games Support).
That makes a nearby server a sensible first choice, but internet traffic does not travel in a straight line. It passes through your local network, your internet provider, backbone networks, and the game operator’s network. Routing decisions and the connections between those networks—known as peering—affect the path. Riot’s account of its network describes efforts to influence routes through peering and its own backbone, while noting that ISP participation also affects results (Riot Games Technology).

A 2022 network-measurement study found examples in its sampled routes where a geographically closer network prefix had about 100 ms more latency in one comparison and 120 ms more in another. The results demonstrate that map distance can mislead; they are measurements of particular networks and game endpoints, not general predictions for every player (PAM 2022 study).

Why ping alone does not describe the experience
Jitter and packet loss
A low average ping can still feel poor if latency varies sharply or packets fail to arrive. Riot defines jitter as variation in latency over time and packet loss as packets that do not reach the player or server. These problems can cause inconsistent movement, delayed actions, or interruptions even when a displayed average looks acceptable (Riot Games Support).
Server load and local conditions
Connection trouble may come from the game service, your ISP, or your own software, equipment, and environment. Local Wi-Fi problems, packet buffering, congestion, or a heavily loaded server can affect play independently of the server’s geographic location. A server-selection screen cannot by itself identify which part of the connection is responsible.

Game networking design
Games do not all handle delay in the same way. Riot’s VALORANT networking explanation describes the game world players see as slightly out of date and explains how server-side rewind helps evaluate hit registration. Such techniques can compensate for some effects of network delay, but they do not remove the time packets take to travel (Riot Games Technology).

Latency tolerance depends on the game and the player’s task. Riot Games Technology said in 2021 that League of Legends remained playable at around 60 ms average latency, while more than 60 ms in VALORANT would be rough. These are Riot’s examples for its own games, not a standard that applies to every multiplayer title (Riot Games Technology).

Riot also stated a development goal in 2020 of reaching 35 ms ping for 70% of the VALORANT player base. That was a goal, not evidence that the target was later achieved or a promise of what an individual player will experience (Riot Games Technology).
Timing-sensitive shooters may make delay more noticeable than slower or turn-based games. Use a game’s own indicators and your experience in that game rather than treating a number from another title as a pass-or-fail threshold.

How to choose between available regions
- Measure the actual game connection. Compare the in-game round-trip ping for each available region. A speed test or ping to an unrelated website does not measure the route to the game server.
- Compare under similar conditions. Keep your device, connection, and time of day as consistent as practical, and check more than one match. Look for both the typical ping and spikes during play.
- Check stability indicators. If the game exposes packet loss or jitter, consider those alongside average ping. Prefer a slightly higher but steady result over a lower number accompanied by frequent spikes or losses.
- Account for play and matchmaking tradeoffs. A different region may change which players you can match with or whether you can readily play with friends. Treat those as practical considerations, separate from the network measurement.
- Choose the region that performs best in practice. Do not select only by geographic closeness; reassess if your route or connection conditions change.
How to tell whether location is the problem
First distinguish a persistent regional difference from a temporary or local fault. If the game provides server status information, check it during an outage or sudden change. Riot’s League of Legends support guide also points players to a Lag Report based on recent matches, which can help review connection behavior (Riot Games Support).
If the problem appears on only one device or over Wi-Fi, test a wired connection when possible. Riot lists switching to wired as a troubleshooting option. Ethernet can improve the local link between your device and router if Wi-Fi is unstable; it cannot shorten the route from your home to a distant game server.

Do not assume that changing DNS settings, using a VPN, or installing a network utility will lower game ping. The sources cited here do not establish a general benefit from those consumer interventions. Judge any change by comparing the game’s own latency and stability indicators before and after, under similar conditions.
