Search and rescue teams combine information from the person reporting an emergency with ground searches, aircraft when available, and on-scene medical assessment. After reaching an injured hiker, rescuers choose an evacuation method that fits the terrain, weather, patient’s condition, available aircraft and trained crews, and where further medical transport can meet them. A helicopter may help without landing beside the patient.

How a report gives rescuers a place to start

The report helps responders understand both what happened and where to look. The National Park Service advises callers to assess the injury, contact 911 when needed, and share the hiker’s last known location, including GPS coordinates if available. If there is no phone or signal, its emergency guidance recommends asking hikers returning to the trailhead to notify park rangers. It also advises having someone remain with the injured person until rescuers arrive.

When cell service is unavailable, a satellite messenger or SOS communicator may provide another way to send an emergency message and location. In one remote-canyon incident, hikers used a satellite device to call for help and later communicate while responders coordinated a briefing and helicopter insertion. That account shows one possible communication route; it does not establish that all devices work alike or guarantee that a message will result in a particular response. The incident account

How teams search and reach the hiker

Teams may search on foot, use aircraft for aerial reconnaissance, or combine the two. Aircraft may also carry rescuers closer to a site. The National Park Service says aircraft can search, move or insert trained personnel, extract patients, and transport them either to a hospital or to a landing zone for ground transport. Some parks operate aircraft; others use military, state, county, or other partners. NPS Visitor Protection – Aviation Program

Finding the person from the air does not necessarily mean the aircraft can land there. In a Yosemite rescue, a helicopter located two hikers and landed nearby; a four-person rescue team continued on foot and confirmed the hikers needed immediate evacuation. At Wrangell-St. Elias, a local air taxi operator spotted an injured hiker in a ravine and relayed the location to park responders, who hiked in to provide care. These incidents illustrate possible combinations of local observation, air support, and ground response—not a fixed procedure for every rescue. What happens after rescuers reach the patient

Responders assess the injury, provide care within their training and available resources, and work out a safe way to move the patient. The evacuation plan depends on access, terrain, weather, aircraft capability, the patient’s condition, and risks to rescuers. Reaching the hiker is therefore only one part of the operation.

In the Wrangell-St. Elias incident, snow and terrain made the park’s A-Star helicopter unsuitable for access. The National Park Service requested a hoist-capable aircraft; a rescue team was lowered to the patient, provided additional care, and stabilized him for transport. The helicopter took him to an airport, where he transferred to an air ambulance for onward transport. NPS Wrangell-St. Elias account

How evacuation methods differ

The method depends on what the site and available crews permit. The National Park Service lists hoist, short-haul, rappel, and other trained aviation techniques. These are not interchangeable options that can be chosen regardless of conditions; they require suitable aircraft, trained personnel, and an appropriate plan. The available accounts do not establish a general ranking of methods or comparative success rates.

Method or approach How it can be used What the cited examples establish
Landing nearby, then proceeding on foot A helicopter lands where it can, while rescuers walk the remaining distance. In Yosemite, rescuers landed near two hikers and reached them on foot. NPS Yosemite account
Hoist A rescue team can be lowered from a hoist-capable aircraft when landing or direct access is unsuitable. At Wrangell-St. Elias, rescuers were lowered to a patient and later extracted him by helicopter. NPS Wrangell-St. Elias account
Short-haul A person is suspended below a helicopter on a rope. It can support access or evacuation where landing is not feasible, when conditions and trained crews permit. The NPS describes a Grand Teton rescue in which a ranger assessed the patient, used an aerial evacuation suit, and flew the patient to a place where an ambulance could meet them. NPS Grand Teton short-haul account
Long-line A helicopter moves a patient or rescuer on a line when site conditions prevent landing. In a May 29, 2026 Denali update, the NPS reported using a long-line extraction because terrain and conditions prevented the helicopter from landing. NPS Denali update
Rescue basket A patient can be carried in a basket to a camp or other transfer point, subject to operational conditions. The same Denali incident series reports climbers extracted in rescue baskets to a camp for medical evaluation and onward transfer. NPS Denali update

Why the helicopter may not take the patient straight to a hospital

The aircraft may take a patient directly to a hospital, or it may carry them to a landing zone, camp, airport, or other transfer point for ground or air ambulance transport. In Denali’s May 2026 account, the climber evacuated by long-line was moved to Kahiltna Base Camp and transferred to an air ambulance. In Wrangell-St. Elias, the patient was flown to an airport before transferring to an air ambulance. The National Park Service describes both hospital transport and transport to a landing zone for ground transport as possible aircraft roles. What hikers can do while waiting for help

  • Share the last known location as precisely as possible, including GPS coordinates if available.
  • If there is no signal, ask returning hikers to alert park rangers or other authorities.
  • When it is safe and practical, have someone stay with the injured person until rescuers arrive, as the NPS emergency plan advises.
  • If carrying a satellite communicator, use it according to its instructions to report the emergency and location; device features and coverage vary.

These steps help communicate where help is needed; they do not determine which resources can respond or how quickly they can reach the site.
