Scientists answer this by combining a rock’s geological setting, texture, minerals, and chemistry—not by relying on one visual clue. Minerals and veins can record contact with water; some mineral evidence, interpreted in context, can point to later circulation of heated groundwater. Because these events can happen in sequence, a Martian rock may preserve evidence of its original formation and more than one later alteration.
What evidence can show that water altered a Martian rock?
Scientists look for agreement among several kinds of evidence. Clay minerals are one clue because water is part of their structure. Veins, fractures, mineral chemistry, and the rock’s setting can help establish how water moved through or changed the rock. None of these clues alone necessarily identifies the full history.
For example, NASA’s Curiosity rover has found clay-bearing areas that help reveal places where water interacted with rocks; the pattern and surrounding geology matter to interpreting that contact (NASA, 2021).
How do scientists distinguish the original rock from later changes?
They first establish what kind of rock they are examining, then ask which features formed later. A rock can be igneous—formed from cooled molten material—and still be altered by water afterward. NASA reported that Perseverance identified igneous rocks on Jezero crater’s floor with water-altered minerals, while the alteration was not pervasive throughout those floor rocks (NASA, 2022).

That distinction is important: evidence of water alteration does not mean water formed the original rock, and a crater’s ancient lake history does not establish that every rock in it was altered in the same way.
What do rover instruments actually measure?
Different instruments test different properties. Scientists build an interpretation by comparing those results with visible textures and geological context.

- Mineral identification: Curiosity’s CheMin analyzes powdered samples to identify minerals. Mineral types help scientists assess the conditions and ingredients involved in a rock’s formation, deposition, or alteration (NASA, 2023).
- Laser and spectroscopic observations: Perseverance’s SuperCam characterizes targets using laser and spectroscopic measurements. Its near-infrared observations identified water-altered minerals in Jezero floor rocks; PIXL adds fine-scale elemental chemistry at selected targets (NASA, 2022).
- Laboratory gas analysis: Curiosity’s SAM heats powdered sample material and analyzes the gases released. This is a laboratory procedure performed to study a sample; the heating step itself is not evidence that the rock was naturally heated on Mars (NASA, 2013).
What points specifically to hot water?
Evidence for water alone does not establish that the water was hot. Scientists look for minerals and chemical patterns consistent with hotter fluid circulation, then check whether the interpretation fits the rock’s setting and other observations.
In a 2026 account of rocks at the inner edge of Jezero crater, NASA highlighted fluorite as a clue to a later heated underground-water event. Fluorite typically forms when hot water circulates through volcanic rocks, but this is an interpretation of that geological setting, not a universal standalone test for hydrothermal alteration. The observations were interpreted as evidence of at least three separate water interactions, including the later heated-groundwater episode (NASA, 2026).

Why can the same rock record water and heat?
Fluid events can occur at different times. A rock may form first, encounter water later, and then be affected by a subsequent episode of warmer groundwater. Scientists therefore look for a sequence: which minerals belong to the original rock, which occur in veins or altered zones, and whether the distribution and chemistry support distinct interactions.
The Jezero rim findings illustrate this layered interpretation: the evidence was not treated as a simple choice between “water” and “heat,” but as a record of multiple water encounters, one of which was interpreted as involving heated groundwater (NASA, 2026).

Why one Martian location cannot stand for all the others
Mineral evidence varies from place to place. A review of Curiosity’s Gale crater results described localized geochemical or mineralogical evidence for hydrothermal alteration, but reported that CheMin had not found abundant or widespread hydrothermal phases such as serpentine, chlorite, and prehnite in the Gale materials reviewed. That finding does not negate evidence at Jezero; it shows why conclusions should stay tied to the rocks and locality studied (NASA Technical Reports Server, 2020).

What Cheyava Falls shows about unresolved evidence
Perseverance’s 2024 observations of the Cheyava Falls rock included white calcium sulfate veins, reddish material suggestive of hematite, and small pale spots with dark halos. PIXL detected iron and phosphate in the halos, while SHERLOC scans indicated organic compounds. NASA’s mission account said the features were compelling but left the rock’s exact formation history and the role of heating by nearby rocks unresolved (NASA, 2024).

A later NASA Science update reported that a 2025 Nature paper described the Sapphire Canyon sample from Cheyava Falls as containing potential biosignatures, while emphasizing that further study is needed before drawing conclusions about life (NASA Science, 2025). Organic compounds or potential biosignature evidence do not by themselves settle how a rock formed, whether heating contributed, or whether life was present.
A practical way to compare possible histories
When scientists weigh water-only, heat-related, or sequential explanations, they compare multiple lines of evidence rather than treating any single mineral as decisive:
Quick Recap
- Minerals: Which minerals are present, and which instrument identified them?
- Distribution: Are alteration features widespread, localized, or confined to veins and fractures?
- Sequence: What appears to be the original rock, and what points to later alteration?
- Fluid conditions: Does the evidence indicate water generally, or support a heated-groundwater interpretation?
- Corroboration and uncertainty: Do texture, mineralogy, chemistry, and setting agree, and what alternative histories remain?
